heavy bows are always a big topic, how about a thread to show some off? for sake of this thread lets make it #60 or more. i'll start it off here is my Northern Mist Classic #80@28 and 70 inches long. it was a gift from my buddy Casey (Zmonster)when we went on our elk hunt to Colorado. just started shooting it a lot in the last month and was surprised how quickly I got use to the heavier weight. absolutely rocks the bag target with 55/75 GT's!

would love to see some videos of people shooting them too!
Yikes Ken! My shoulder hurts looking at that! :archer2:
the Royal & SS are both 70 @ my draw length. The river runner which I just picked up on a trade is around 65 at my dl.

Here's my hickory eastern woodland style self-bow I made earlier this year for my hunting bow this year. It's 66" Tip to tip (64" NtN) and draws 65# at my draw length of 27". It slings a 700 grain arrow at a respectable 156 fps, I can get up to 162 with a 565 grain arrow.
BTW I've since added a leather handle with an arrow rest in it. I was shooting it like what's in the photos but was getting inconsistent shooting obviously from inconsistent grip placement lol :nono:

60# at your draw, or at 28?
I can't even string this stuff with out some help............ :biglaugh: And then could never get it back to anchor at 29"... ...God bless you guys!!!
You guys are ANIMALS!!! Great bows!
#60 at your draw
I often hear about how people need to go down in draw weight as they age...I will be 65 in December and I would have to sit down and make a count of the bows I shoot that are 60 or more at my draw length...I do that both right handed and left handed...I just shot rounds of Technohunt on consecutive days with my 60 pound lefty Habu...43 shots in a half hour the first day and 34 shots the second day...if I can shoot 40 shots in a half hour hitting the same full draw on the last shot as I did on the first shot I feel I am not overbowed...sorry but I long ago stopped posting pics here since I have nothing to prove to anyone
DDave
My hat's off to you guys over 60 still shooting heavy bows.
I shot 80lbs when I was young in my 30's but after 45 years of back breaking, ball busting construction work my doc said I have just worn the shoulder completely out.
Now shoot mid 40's and 50's occasionally which still works fine on Whitetails.

Pronghorn lb 63@28
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSRka3bpOYM
I enjoy shooting my 68# bow. I also find that I shoot better when I draw and hold, so I have to work to keep my strength up. A couple of years ago I made a couple YouTube clips (although I cannot for the life of me remember why) where I drew and held the bow for a count to 10 before releasing. I did one with heavy bow and one with the lighter (48#) one, but I must have deleted the clip with the heavy one.
https://youtu.be/7unYmYHolRI
I'm NOT saying that you should ever hold 10 seconds when actually shooting, but I think it's a good idea to be STRONG ENOUGH to.
Anyway, I find that my shooting is SOOOOO much better when my muscles can absolutely dominate the bow, heavy OR light. I've not been shooting much this year, so my endurance has waned, but I usually try to work out with the heavy bow several times a week, without even loosing an arrow.
Ken...I think that you just found your new hunting partner!
I have several Bighorns, Schafers, Allegheny Mountain, Wild Horse Creek, etc I shoot over 60#.
I will tell you after shooting this bow a few months now it gets easier every time and when I pick up my 50-60 pounds bows they pull back smooth as butter.....
I don't have anything to prove either but I have a lot of things to share .....after all this is a traditional bowhunting website.
I'll post some pictures when I get to a computer..... hard to do on this phone.
I'll also pull up a thread the argument for heavy bows Just For Kix
I have been shooting heavier bows effectively for several years. In fact as you know the bow you posted at the start was supposed to be mine but the USPS lost it so a replacement was built and later the original found its way to you. I have a few photos handy so I will share them.
Recently (as in last week) I had a successful pronghorn hunt in Wyoming and both my buck and doe were harvested with "Charisma" my 73@28 Pacific Yew longbow.

Last season I got a couple hogs and a whitetail doe, I was shooting my Northern Mist Classic "Bona Fide" which pulls 73@28. Here is one of the hogs.
The year before that I took a hog while hunting Cumberland Island with Bona Fide.
And I have taken a few animals with "Cherry Bomb" which is the bow that Steve built to replace the one you have. It pulls 83@28.
This fall I will be shooting "Charisma" mostly but I have picked up a couple of mid 70s recurves that I am itching to hit the woods with so maybe this will be the year I take an animal with a recurve. Time will tell.
Nice Steve!! congrats, I have been out of the country for a little while. That had to be fun.

It was indeed Stan. I just finished an article about the hunt for the TBG newsletter so you can read all about it soon. Also Thom, my hunting partner for this trip, will be doing a post here as soon as he gets caught up.

I just might take this set up to the woods in a couple of weeks in search of Elk. I will be shooting 60# to 64# + with what ever set up I choose. I need to decide, the season is a few days away. :)
Still learning this YouTube stuff. Think In have a link to me shooting my Morrison ILF with MAX 1imbs. Around 70-71# at my draw, a little over 29".

And here is some of me shooting the Morrison, and the shrew Safari, a little over 77# at my draw. Sorry. This is my first attempt at this stuff, and I was rushing around.

I will have to see about making some other videos. I also have aorrison Dakota that is 75#@28", so probably 79# or so at my draw.
At almost 71 (the 29th) I still shoot a 60# bow. It is a recurve. I did shoot a Black Widow, 79# at 30" when I was younger. I can still shoot my friends 75# Wes Wallace LB. But those heavier weights are getting hard on my shoulder. I have so many 2117 arrows I have to keep shooting that 60# recurve for a few more years.
You are doing awesome, Mr. Mosher. I hope to be doing half as well as you. Honestly, I mostly shoot my lighter bows that are 58-64# at my draw weight, because they are my main hunting bows. I just like to play with the heavier ones I'm case I get to chase Buffalo again on short notice.

pdk25,
what is your arrow and broadhead set up on you #80 bows? and what was your set up on the shrew Safari which is what I am pulling?
My draw length is a little over 29", so I may be using arrows that are longer than you want, but I am shooting AD Nitro gold shafts, with around 100 grains of aquarium tuning in shaft, 100 grain brass inserts, and 200 grain tips. The other arrow was a GT 100+ shaft with 100 grain brass insert and either a 250 or 300 grain tip, bit I think 300. I also shoot AD Big Game arrows with setup the same as the Nitros, but with 250 grain tips. I am pretty sure you would need lighter spine with your bow, because it won't be cut as deep on the riser. I bet you could get AD shafts to working you played around with them, and probably 340 spined carbon, depending on the length and tip weight.
QuoteOriginally posted by pdk25:

Never thought of using aquarium tubing. Will have to try that. I have used nylon rope with great success in the past. Weight a bit more than 100 grains, is VERY quiet and in fact I think it dampens the arrow completely. My arrows last year used this and resulted in a 900 grain arrow when all said and done. This year I am not using a weight tube at all and my 350 spine arrows are still coming in at 765 grains and I was VERY pleased with their performance on Antelope.
When I shot the 82# limbs on the ILF, I used GT kinetic 200 shafts, cut to 30", with 100 grain brass hit inserts, 125 grain tip inseers, and 300 grain tips. Those would be way stiff for you. That ILF is cut way past center.
For the HH Rogue, I usually shoot custom woodies made by a friend of mine. I don't remember the spine.
Yeah the aquarium tubing has been around for a long time. I remember making some probably 15 years ago and some with weed eater line inside the aquarium tubing.
Just make sure you cut the tubing a little long so your inserts crutches as a bit so that it's rattle free
Oh and if you're shooting small-diameter shafts you can use the mini aquarium tubing
I agree with making it a little longer. I did that, then when I glued the inserts in, I wedged the arrows between a dresser drawer and the floor to dry so they wouldn't push the insert out. Very quiet this way.

I agree to a certain extent. I don't know if I would say I am dominating the bow, but here is a clip of me controlling my Morrison ILF.

I barely slid in with this one being 60#@31inches. Run some easton 340s for a while but in the end went to a gold tip hunter 300 with 190 grain points when I upgraded to a fast flight string. Total arrow weight 533 grains chronographed at 206 fps. 50.21 ft-lbs of KE and 48.75 slug ft./sec of momentum
love seeing the bows and the videos keep them coming!
This thread made me string up my 62" 76@29 Schafer Silvertip today. It really wasn't bad at all and I shot it pretty comfortable for a while. Shooting these heavy limbs make my other bows and limbs feel like child's play!

Dang, that's a short one. I really wanted one of those to work for me, but with my style of anchor and relatively small cant, the sight window was too short.
what quiver is that on your belt Jesse? looks handy
I took my 65# Hill bow out yesterday and once again found my release is better than with my lighter bows. After my surgery earlier this year, I still can only totally control it for 30 - 40 shots, so not yet ready to shoot 3D rounds with it.
Here is another heavy bow thread with some good info in it.

It says Neet Traditions on it. That is all I really know about it. My Dad gave it to me a while back.
Was doing a bit of searching and ran across this thread... Interesting, but I never really thought of the bows I shoot as "Heavyweights"... When I first started with archery I was told to shoot the heaviest bow I could shoot accurately... I'm sure you've been told, heard, or read this too... So, I've always seemed to gravitate towards bows in he higher poundages... But, I seem to dial back when I had to start putting arrows in arrows and manufacturing arrows to shoot out of them... To much work, and too expensive...
I've owned and shot a bunch of different bows, but here is what is in my bowrack currently after doing some buying/selling/trading this spring... My favorites are Black Widow T/D recurves with low grips... and Thunderstick MOAB longbows...
56" PCH II (69#) and X (64# and 70#) and a 58" PSA III (74#)...

The grips on all of them are very similar, except for the Hill... makes jumping from one bow to another very seamless... The Qarbon Nano is easily the quickest of the bunch and the Hill is easily the slowest... Just need to keep that in my mind when carrying either one of those... The Widows and MOABs are the "workhorses" of my hunting bows and see the most woods time... The PCH II being the one I used most of last fall and this spring for Turkeys/Hogs...

Lol you guys with those heavy bows are crazy. Do you go through a lot more arrows stump shooting? Seems like every time I go out with my 50# bows I break arrows. Couldn't imagine shooting 90# at a stump. Pretty cool though y'all are shooting heavy hives like that.
75@28 homemade recurve. It came out a bit heavy, but that's alright.
