It's getting close. I went scouting yesterday. Lots of sign.. this is the time of year that it gets hard to sleep. The anticipation is palpable.
I hope you all will have a memorable, successful season.
Joe
Ps if your mind wanders so will your arrow.

ANTISIPATION......
Kinda part of the fun . :jumper: :jumper: :jumper:

I feel your pain. I'm hoping that it cools off a bit by Sept 1 around here, and some moisture wouldn't hurt, either. I'm a way better elk hunter than elk killer, but when the bulls are bugling, there is no place better to be than in the high country.
Good luck this season!

I'm am ready....

Can't wait!

I look forward to archery elk season more than just about anything. This will be year number 21 chasing elk with a bow in my hand. The anticipation is indeed high. :campfire: :archer:

I leave Aug 31, my son and I will be hunting for two weeks. I don't normally hunt the early season so this will be new to me. I have a few more things to get in order, but already my mind is in the mountains. I was gifted this 10x12 canvas wall tent. My son and I are going to use it as base camp, then have spike camp as needed. So far I have 25 dollars in some lumbar for support poles and side poles.

I'm eagerly anticipating!
This year most of my hunting will be in a low percentage unit close to home due to health of my spouse, but it hasn't dulled the excitement.
Just being there is something to be thankful for. If there are no elk there, I'll pretend there are. :biglaugh:

I am heading out for the last 2 weeks, can't wait!!!

Just under a month here for my 1st elk season. Sept 6th Woohoo.

I'll be in 'Rado in a month, chasing Wapiti in the High Country too, cant wait.
-
Good luck and safe travels everyone. Maybe someday I will be going also.

I have been doing this since 1994. It never disappoints. Didn't get drawn in AZ so heading to CO for the first week then Idaho. My daughter is now the wolf biologist for Idaho game and fish out of Lewiston. I figure they will tell her where the elk are.

And you'll tell me right....

I'm taking Knobby out to see if he can still keep up at 12,000' for the opener. Elk and deer tags. Can't wait!

FoCo, I'm not worried about "keeping up", I'll get there eventually! Looking forward to it.

I'll be leaving for Idaho in exactly one month. Got most of my gear together and packed. Could probably leave tomorrow.

Will hopefully have camp setup about now two weeks from today

How are the elk looking around the Crested Butte area this year ?????
I head that way next Sunday....

I camped up by oh -be- joyful creek two weeks ago. We sat in camp and watched 50+ elk feed each evening. Then after dark we watched the sky for the international space station. Way to :campfire: much fun.
-
First time elk hunter here. Got drawn for a good unit in Ariz. Cow only but very excited anyway. Have some friends who know the area very well (don't quote me but I think it's near the mogollan rim and it borders a res.) Can you tell the diff between the space station and any other satellites
-
Looking forward to your stories and pictures Joe!
-
Yes the space station is the 3rd brightest thing in the sky (Sun, moon) and it crosses the sky fast. Horizon to horizon at most in 6 minutes.
Check the international space station web site for times and locations.
-
I have an app on my phone that lets you scan the sky and tells what Stars planets and objects you are looking at. It's called SkyView. You can look down at the ground and see what is on the opposite side of the earth as well.
Back to the topic! :)
Today I'm making new strings for two bows. B50, so it will t a few days to break them in.
Broadheads are Sharp and mounted. Pulled the pack apart and am going to rethink it. Just a daypack, you'd think it would be simple but I keep over thinking it.
-
Good luck to all you western boys chasing elk...have an enjoyable, safe and successful season!....someday I'll make it out there to hunt those majestic bulls
-
Good luck to ye' ol'elk hunters!
I'm completely jealous and I miss the mountains terribly.
Next year will find me huffing and puffing over rugged rocks and dusty hills!
