I recently got a Bearpaw serving tool by way of a generous give-away.
Haven't ever served a string before.
I'd like to re-serve my current string: it's and 8 strand D-97 (or possibly D-10). I shoot Boning classic nocks. Original serving was perfect, but has worn down some at the nock point, and the fit is too loose.
Question is, what size serving to try? My guess (and it is just a guess), would be .024, but I'm hoping some of the experienced string makers here might steer me the right way.
Thanks in advance.
I think that would be fine. I use 0.19 on a 16 stand but I use Easton G-nocks. Glue on nocks need more serving for a good fit. 0.24 ill work fine. If its to loose run a stand under serving to thicken t up. That's what I do instead of buying multiple sizes.
You will need more than .024. Especially for Bohning Classics.
From my experience, you would need to double serve with .018 and .024. .030 with some padding of Teflon tape under it should work also.
Shoot me a PM if I can help further.

I use .024 for 14 strand D97 and really like the fit. I'm guessing you'll be in the .030 range or maybe having to double serve.
Thom
Yep, bigger than .024! I also use Halo.024 on my 14 strand D97 strings and it is perfect.
Bisch
Might need more than one size.
I personally like to go on the thinner side and serve up about an inch of string then try test fitting the sort of nock I will be using.
If too loose, start adding strands of string beneath ( padding) till you get it just right.

I rarely make a string with that low of a strand count, so take this for what it's worth.
Power Grip comes in .032, and holds the string better than any material I know of. You will need something like that, because serving slipping can be a problem with "skinny" strings and slick serving.
More than likely you will need to double serve or pad under the serving. Of the two, I prefer double serving.
I have some over-stocked serving cheap in several sizes if you need any.
Chad
Chad, I agree with the Powergrip. I am loving the bunch I bought at ETAR. Thanks again for the help.
Cool--glad you like it. If need more, just holler.
Will do. I'm pretty stocked up for a while.
How does the release with Powergrip compare to halo and 62xs?
SteveB, I have been testing it for a while. I like to have experience with a material before I offer it to customers. I fell that it shoots as good as anything. I have been doing this a long time, and take it seriously.
Thanks!
I'd bet the power trip .032 would be perfect. Power grip .032 is the same size as double seeved SX .018 in my experience. It would be right at what you're looking for.
Great help guys, I appreciate it. I'll probably go with the .032 rather than double serve or pad.
I make 8 strand d10 strings. I double serve with .024 for bohning classic nocks
