Title: NOISE TEST POLL (FOR FUN) results added page 3
Post by: DanielB89 on August 06, 2016, 09:58:00 PM
I did a noise test with my new morrison max 4 limbs.  I shot 2 arrows inside my kitchen, so accoustics will be bouncing around every where.  I wanted to see if everyones opinions were the same as mine.  I shot 2 arrows back to back.  You will not know the order of the arrows for a little while just to keep the poll going(steal the limelight).

1 arrow was roughly 615 grains, the other was round 490.  Both were shot out of my morrison max 4 limbs that are #46@28 and I draw to just over 29.

 https://youtu.be/q_p7s_ppBWs

Please vote which arrow you think was the loudest and the quietest by simply voting "first or second".

**SIDE NOTE, I WILL NOT BE TRYING TO WRITE A 10 PAGE ABSTRACT ABOUT THESE TEST RESULTS, THESE WERE DONE WITHOUT A SHOOTING MACHINE WITH DIFFERENT WEIGHTED HEADS ON THE SAME SPINE(.350) ARROW.  PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS TEST "INVALID"**

As deaf as I am, I could not tell any difference. I bet I could in person though.

Tough call but I think First shot was the quietest

Hard to tell since you are obviously shooting at a target that is VERY close. If you want to make a valid comparison, you are going to have to shoot at something far enough away that all we can hear is the shot but not the target strike, which is about as loud as the shot...perhaps even louder.

My guess is that the first shot was the 490 and the second the 615 because it seems the duration between shot and strike is a bit longer on the second. Neither was particularly loud, BTW.

good observation.  I noticed the duration between bow noise and hit was longer with the slower arrow(obvious), but i didn't imagine it would be that perceivable at only 10 yards.  Makes me wonder the difference in the speed between the two.

If I went outside, the bugs would be so loud you wouldn't even hear the bow.

Sounds to me like the second shot was just a tad bit louder.

I got a decibal app on my iphone.  Have you tried that for tuning???

I'd say the second shot was louder, but very hard to tell.

Daniel, Both sound loud and I would suspect they are a bit spine stiff, are either set up properly for your bow?

I couldnt tell the difference until I just skipped to the shots and played them back to back

first shot is about 39-40 secs into the video  second shot is 52-53

I think the first shot was a little quieter

Second, but not enough that I'd sweat it. I also shoot super hooks (Border Hex 6.5)and they have a different sound to me. It's never seemed to bother the dead deer though.

To me second shot was not necessarily louder. But there was more of some other noise involved. Like maybe something on the release or .?.?  Arrow slap or arm guard... Either way I'll be calling you this week. I need a new string!

I cant hear it good as they both sound identical to me. Without being familiar with your bow, im going to say that is the "POP" of a recurve....

I have really good hearing and they sounded the same to me.  If there is any difference it sure isn't enough to be concerned about it.

I think 2 was not necessarily louder but noisier I'd guess that to be the lighter arrow of the two.

Ist shot quieter, not at release, but hitting the target did not make as much sound.

We may all flunk this since there seems to be a consensus, lol.  there's an interesting Youtube video that someone posted the link to recently, don't recall which site. It seemed to dispel the widely held belief that 3U is louder than split and it'd be hard to dispute his results.  He recorded both with the same arrow out of a recurve and overlaid the graphs of the decibel meter. The spikes were almost identical although one (I forget which) may have been slightly longer in duration.  His conclusion, they're different sounds, but one's technically not necessarily louder than the other.

#2 arrow was 130 grains heavier than arrow #1

Just watched the split vs 3 under video and that is very enlightening.

Actually they both were loud.

What were the arrow spines/length/tip weight? I assume the difference in your test wasn't just added point weight?  Most folks who set out to build a heavier hunting shaft go to a stiffer than required spine and then offset that with linger length and/or additional tip weight.
