Title: It's just about that time.....Lets see everybody's setup for this season
Post by: tomsm44 on August 03, 2016, 06:08:00 PM
I'll get it started.  First up is my go to bow.  After a blowing my first shot at a deer with trad equipment last season, I'm hoping to get a little blood on it this year.  Only took 4 years to get a shot, so maybe year #5 will be my lucky year.

Flatwoods custom R/D, 64", 47#@28"
Gold Tip Trad 600s with 250 gr Tusker Concordes up front for around 530 gr total.

  (http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg614/tomsm44/image_67.jpeg) (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/tomsm44/media/image_67.jpeg.html)

Next is my backup bow for the season.  This is actually my wife's bow.  I traded for it this past spring to get her shooting with me.  She found two quivers and a dozen arrows already fletched with feathers cheap at a garage sale not long after that.  As luck would have it, the arrows, already cut to 28", fly perfectly off of it for me with my 135 gr Bear screw ins.  This is probably the best shooting bow in my house, so I'm going to "borrow" it some since she isn't ready to hunt trad yet.

Hoots Lil Hoot recurve, 56", 42#@28"
Carbon Express Predator II 3050s with 135 gr Bear Razorheads screw ins for around 410 gr total.

Now let's see what everybody else is shooting.

Probably the same as last year. 56" Lil Hoot 54#@28

May take my 67# osage self though. I haven't decided for elk but the selfbow will be ready for whitetails.

I haven't got my hands on it yet, but I'm sure it will be the bow I'm having built right now. Maddog Mountaineer 48@29. I've got some full length GT 3555's and 200 grain VPA's that I'm hoping will work. It should be ready any day!! I'll post a few pics when it's ready.

55# Cari-bow Tuktu Ex with either some home rolled German spruce woodies or 2018 vintage green Game Getters. Both sets fly great when I do my part.

Picked up a 40# Bear Sonoma for something to shoot while recovering from surgery and found it likes some 500's I have so I'll probably tote it during the late season if I have to hunt that long...   :saywhat:

Was going to try something different this year to "change" my luck......but then I shot my old River Runner from Holm-Made bows and that was it. It performs so well and feels like an old friend. So the 60" bow will in the woods again and it's 62" brother will be my back up......both 45# @ 29", both like alum, cedars or Carbons so we shall see what the day brings.

I think I'm going to start the season off with my handmade eastern woodland style selfbow "Adahy" (Ah-Dah-Hey - Cherokee for 'one who lives in the woods'). She is 64" ntn and 65# at my 27" draw. Will be shooting Surewood hunters grade shafts spined 55-60s with Onestringer custom wraps and 135 grain Zwicky Deltas.

Then as a backup or if I get too frustrated with the SB I will go to my 64" ntn 57# @ 28" RedStag from Carpathian Traditional Archery with Easton Traditional Only Shafts cut 28.5" with 100 grain brass inserts and tipped with 150 grain 3 blade VPA terminators!

Morrison Dakota 54#. 4 Zwickey No Mercy broadheads, 3 in back quiver, 1 in my homemade stalking quiver. Knife, glove, and armguard.  My old magazine pouch with first aid/basic survival stuff, gloves, 550 cord and bags for field dressing and dragging, a backup tab, grunt tube and turkey diaphragm, and some space for a snack, thin gloves and headnet. Just need to attach a water bottle to my quiver, might make something from an old seabag. Oh and a fluflu and regular arrow with blunts, in case a squirrel or rabbit charge after me

I'll be using my 60" Morrison Cheyenne this year.  I'll be shooting black eagle X-impact .400's and 300 grain VPA 3 blades.  My backup bow will be my old proven Foley with FMJ .500's and Simmons interceptors up front.

I've got a jack kemp kwyk stick on the way now that I hope to get tuned before season so I can hunt with it also. Well, my setup has changed slightly since I started this thread last month.  The more I shot my wife's Lil Hoot, the more I liked it, so it is moving to my #1 spot and the Flatwoods longbow will be backup.  I did some fine tuning with the arrow setup and am changing from the Razorheads to Simmons Interceptors.  I also noticed a couple of the arrows were flying funny.  They came already fletched from a yard sale with a quiver my wife picked up.  When I looked closely, I noticed they were fletched with a straight fletch jig and all the feathers didn't have a consistent angle.  I had some leftover spliced 5" shields from a project a couple years back, so I capped, crested, and refletched them with two 5" shields on a right helical.  I'll find out this evening after work how the new fletching flies.

I have the great good fortune of having been drawn in June for a New Hampshire moose tag. In the weeks since, there's been a competition to choose a primary bow and a backup from the three bows I have that exceed 55#.

The leadoff hitter will be the bow at the top of this array. It's a Talon Classic longbow made by the late Dave Paxton in 1996 as a prize for a Professional Bowhunters Society banquet. (I'm its third owner.) It is built of sassafras, 64" long and drawing 60#.

The backup will be the 1958 Bear Kodiak recurve at the bottom. The camo sleeves will conceal the (in)famous blonde limbs from the suspicious gaze of  Alces alces. This bow is 60" long and draws 58#. It won a chance to go on this hunt because it's a helluva good shooting bow and will shoot the arrows I use for the Talon Classic.

I'm leaving the middle bow at home. It's a Morrison Dakota R/D, 58" long and drawing 58# at my draw length. I shoot the Kodiak better.

The arrows have been built by me from Surewood Douglas fir shafts, bearing 190 grain Meatheads on the front. Total weight is 670-690 grains.

Thirty-six days and counting ...

I changed mine since this thread started. Same Predator recurve but using my AD Trad tapered shafts. Every year just as the season arrives amy tune changes. So AD trads get moved to starting position. They aren't the shafts to win the olympics with but they have hunting accuracy. Meaning they shoot good in adverse conditions and with extreme weather changes.

56in rich emery Stik 50@28 drawing 29.5 arrow dynamic shafts unsure if I'm going to shoot the same G5 montecs or not. And I usually seem to switch it up a few times during the season this year my super grizzly 45@28 with GT trads may make a couple of appearances. These are the two I shoot the best
