I was doing some scouting in my elk area the last three days, and saw lots of elk right at dark the first two evenings, but last night was the mother lode. Not a bull in sight, but this herd had somewhere around 300 elk in it (no exaggeration!). It was great to watch them as they left the timber for a creek, with lots of cow and calf talk going on. The picture isn't the best, because it was taken right at dark, but what a great experience to see this many elk. They may be in the next county come September, but I have been watching remnants of this herd for over a month now, so they seem to be pretty happy where they are.

Amazing sight
Centaur,
Post more photos! That is pretty neat. I have been buying elk and moose preference points and I can probably apply for elk next year. I think the area where my outfitter has elk camps is 45? or 36? or both, I can't recall. Last summer we rode up to one of those high lakes in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
I have never hunted elk, but they sure are awesome animals, especially in a large group as in your picture.
Pat I might have to E-mail them and tell em they will be Much happier in Washington State:^) ..OE
OE, with my luck with elk, Washington is probably where they will be come September :knothead:
Thanks for sharing that photo. That must have been awesome to sit and watch. I hope our elk herd in NC takes off. It will be a long time before most of us can hunt them but I would love to see a herd move through the woods.
Looks to be a great year for elk in the bighorns.
