Title: Show bows with cocobolo and 1) cedar/juniper, 2) tuplipwood, and 3) skins
Post by: Gdpolk on July 12, 2016, 07:41:00 AM
I'm on the list with a local bowyer for a take down longbow.  I know I want a cocobolo riser and bamboo limb cores.  I'm undecided on what I want to do on my limb veneers.  The three options I keep flipping around in my head are:
1) red cedar or juniper, with a few knot holes and good color contrast
2) tulipwood with good colors contrast
3) osage or maple with a set of copperhead skins

That said, has anybody ran into issues with snake skins on a hunting bow being a little fragile?  While I love the look, I am a little concerned that it might not be the best option for a bow that will be hunted through thick woods and at times in poor weather over the years.

I haven't.  This is one of the prettiest combo's I've ever seen personally.  I'm just wanting something with a little more character in the grain of the veneers than yew.  I may do a yew base if I skin them out with copperheads or canebrakes to help pull out some yellows.  I didn't want something incredibly wild though like exhibition grade myrtle or bacote or something.  I was hoping to build it with a very nice chunk in the riser and a middle of the road strip of wood on the limbs.

No issues with skins if applied professionally. A once a year waxing doesn't hurt.
Tons of skinned bows. Hunt hard with them all.
