I'll be chasing bears and bucks in the mountains with longbow in hand in early October,,perhaps a float-in canoe hunt...any guys interested in the challenge?
I have several areas in mind where success has loomed in the past...
Nothing finer'n hunting in the Addies with stickbow in hand...
I am envious. It sounds like a great trip. I wish you good luck.
I was planning such a hunt about 1 1/2 ago, but a new knee and some other issues have put it on the back burner for now. I was going to use an open tandem kayak and thought about Cedar River flow, or the back side of Indian lake. Right now I'm just thinking day trips to the BIG woods. If you do it keep us posted........it would be a great adventure.
AAAh Yes Ron, The Bullhead Range, and Siamese Wilderness Area, there are some ancient bucks up high, have killed a few back in there..
Man this sounds fantastic!!!! I'll be looking into doing a float-in canoe trip once I finish my apprenticeship
Always wanted to do a canoe trip in the Adirondacks
Siamese Wilderness......The hunting camp I belong to is on the south west edge that great expanse. I have hunted in that area since 1971, with party's and alone. Big woods and some very rough country, bear, deer and now a small population of moose. Bobcat, fisher, pine martin and very large coyote/brush wolf. Hard to pattern deer but I have seen some real slammers while wandering that beautiful country.
I had he wonderful fortune to be born and raised in the northern foothills of the ADKs. My first memories of hunting is dogging deer and small game around the big woods. And still to this day my favorite hunt is to pick up a track in fresh snow and follow it all day never crossing a paved road. There has been more than once that I have had to get a ride back to the start due to running out of light.
I am sure that you will enjoy your trip.
Jerry

What would be a good canoe for that type of trip? I remember someone on here was asking if anyone was interested in having a freighter style canoe built. I forget who it was.
Any broad beamed canoe (40") or more will be fine..you can get back in with a solo canoe, or kayak, also, depending on how much of a minimalist you are.
Very few portages, as it is primarily crossing deep Adirondack lakes, but the weather in October can be dicey, keep that in mind.
A low profile boat loaded with gear, when the water is choppy, can spell disaster too.
for anyone needing gear I could supply ANY and ALL you need.
Ken, I just want to say you are a great guy with a really big heart! Guys like you make this group so much better. Great offer brother
I was in the Indian Lake area last week, saw lots of turkeys, a few does and one nice young buck. I will be back there in Sept. for the moose festival in Indian Lake. It's a beautiful area. It sounds like a great trip!
Yes, great area. Game is quite plentiful. Heavy Black Bear population also.
Moose are quite frequent in the area also, makes for an interesting hunt!
What are the particulars: Dates, licenses, etc?
Man... do I have fond memories of Upper Jay... Trying to get to Rhinebeck in October if work allows. Good luck and sounds great.
Sounds like a lot of fun but have to make some money that month so will be traveling - I hope
Are some of the guys who are interested in the Adirondack bow hunt going to Denton Hill? It might be a good place to get together and hash out some plans for the hunt. :campfire: Just a thought.
This sounds interesting, hadn't been hunting the 'Daks since I left NYS.
Great country, grew up near Utica & still venture up there occasionally. Not really a target rich environment, but still a great time. Mike

Your right......if you want to see a bunch of deer there are many places to go other than the big woods up north. You have to hunt there because you want to hunt there. The true wild places are getting few and far between.......but you can have a wilderness adventure in the Adirondacks.
Any new info on Adirondack bow hunt?
Wish I could join you.
I spent a lot of time there bow hunting with great success.
Indian lake area my favorite!!!
I'll be up near Star lake for early bear season
I will be in Colorado from 9/12 till 9/25. Upon my return, I am looking at doing this hunt sometime around 10/8. This will be a 3 day weekend hunt, In the Siamese Wilderness area, requiring a canoe to cross Lake Abanakee, and Indian Lake. Primitive camp, focused on Bear and Deer.
I may be up for this. Scott will you be at Oxtar?

Any update? Did y'all head out and do the float trip?
There was just a great Wired To Hunt Podcast about this exact subject. Hunting the Adirondacks.
