Title: New to Me Groves Flame Recurve
Post by: WildmanSC on July 10, 2016, 02:58:00 PM
I recently purchased a new to me Groves Flame Recurve.  I sold my last stickbow about 4 or 5 months ago and really miss it.  Now I'll be back to shooting a stickbow again.  Below are some pics of it.

Ron,

Thanks!  I normally buy three piece T/D recurves.  But at a price of $200.00 I figured I could shoot a one piece recurve!  :)

I think I'll try a feather rest on it.  It should do less damage to the feathers on my Maxima Red arrows than any of the stick on the window rests I might try.

For you folks that have been on TradGang for awhile, believe it or not, this is the first stickbow I've bought in nearly 3 years.  The last one I bought was a used set of Morrison Cheyenne Max 1 carbon limbs I bought from Oldogrib, or something like that, and a new Morrison Cheyenne riser I bought from Bob.  I shot that bow for nearly two and a half years before Arthur (ritis) started screaming at me.  I sold that bow 4 or 5 months ago and do I ever miss it.

Bill,

Here's a post on another site about Harold Groves which I found interesting:

"Harold Groves made great bows in Albuquerque from the 1950s until he died in 1997.... His pre-stress system was designed by the top scientists at Los Alamos Labs, where Harold worked as a machinist. They did it as a stress-relieving fun project. Harold was adamant that the "eggheads" deserved the credit for designing the bow. The result was the fastest recurve bow ever made. Today if you can find one, you can expect to pay from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the model and the condition. They haven't been made since 1998...shot in a tournament two weeks ago in Scotland with one, and the other guys couldn't believe the speed and smoothness of taking the shot. Harold's daughter, Sandy Burbridge, has compiled a book about Harold and the Spitfire bow."

BTW, I found one of his target bows recently at a garage sale which was 28# at 28" and 66".  It has a whopper of a riser and makes a Bear Tamerlane feel like a featherweight.

Is your bow one of those so-called "dynastressed" models?

Lon,

No sir, the Flame isn't one of the Dyna-Stressed models.  It's a sweet looking bow though!

Yes, I saw that article, too.  He made some great looking bows.

I had to work up a quick order with 3 Rivers to get a glove and armguard.  I sold mine along with the Morrison Cheyenne.  I was just thinking while typing, I also need to get a bowstringer.  I never string a bow without one!

Graps,

Thank you sir, I think I will!

My new to me Groves Flame arrived in the mail today.  I also received a bow stringer Tom Bohl from VA kindly mailed to me.  Gotta love the TG family!  :)

After I get a chance to open the package, get the bow set up and shoot it, I'll post some more pics and an evaluation on the bow from my perspective.

Mike,

Will do.

Clay,

Thanks!  I normally buy 3 piece T/D bows, but I loved the looks of the Flame when I saw it on the big auction site.  And it looks much better in my hands that it did in the pics!   :)

I don't know for sure, but I would guess a brown phase of Bubinga or its cousin Shedua.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.  I'll be going into town shortly and I'll pick up a target so I can shoot it.  The pics don't do the bow justice.  The grain in the riser is absolutely gorgeous.

I finally shot the bow this past Saturday.  It took me 5 shots to get the bow hitting where I was looking.

I heard the first shot, at 10 yards, smack the target, but when I looked at the target I couldn't see the arrow sticking out of the target anywhere on its face.  So, I walked up to the target, looked and couldn't see any indication that it had hit the target.  I walked around behind the target and couldn't see any indication of a hit there either.  I continued walking around the target and just as I got to the front I noticed a small hole in the extreme upper right corner of the target, I had barely clipped.  I found the arrow about 15 yards behind the target in the woods.

I took the next shot at 5 yards and it hit about 6" above and 4" to the right of my point of aim.  So I switched to a 400 spine Victory arrow and it hit even higher.  For my fourth shot I switched back to my Carbon Express Maxima Red 350 arrow and this time I nocked it above the nock point I crimped onto the string.  Theis shot hit dead on my point of aim horizontally and about 1/" high.  My firth shot I switched back to the Victory 400 spine arrow, nocked it above the nock point and it hit about 1.5" higher than the Maxima Red with the same aim point.

I took the bow into the house and crimped on a new nock point 1/4-5/16" above the first nock point and removed the first nock point.  I haven't shot it again, yet.  It's a sweet shooting bow, hits hard and hits where I aim with the Maxima Red 350 arrow with 200 gr up front.

My son-in-law picked up my new NAP Flipper rest for me yesterday.  I've got it installed and when it cools down this evening I'm going to go out and shoot a few arrows.  My new endless loop shipped today and I should receive it on Thursday.  After I install it I can get down to some serious shooting!

I really like the NAP Flipper rest. I think I need to adjust it in a bit. My arrows are impacting a bit left and further left as I back up.

My arrows are hitting in the 1.5" white circle in the center of my bag target at 5 and 10 yards. But then they drop about 8 or 9" when I back up to 15 yards. I'm going to have to work on form and possibly have to switch to my Victory 400 spine arrows with 125 or 145 grains up front instead of my 200 grain points on my Maxima Red 350s.
