My first elk hunt is fast approaching with Colorado opener in late August. I'll be hunting the first 12 days or so. I'd like to learn more about behavior and early season tactics. What books or other resources have been helpful for you?

Elk101.com has a lot of good info. There's probably some knuckle heads on there just like everywhere else but you may be able to get some good stuff from there too...Good luck..BeauJ
A man made of Elk by Dave Peterson is a very good read with alot of Elk sense and traditional insight to make you realize to hunt them is a privalage, to get one is a gift.
Mike Lapinski has several books out that I think are pretty good.
Elk 101 has a comprehensive elk hunting class online. I've hunted elk for 20 years and still learned a ton of information. There is great virtual scouting info and elk behavior insight as well. I think you can still save $40 if you use the code GRITTY40. Its a very small investment to make for a guy spending hundreds of dollars and traveling hundreds of miles and to new country to try to locate and kill an elk.
I'll second Elk 101's university. Well worth the money.

In addition to Elk101.com, I found this very helpful:
Elk & Elk Hunting by Hartt Wixom (https://www.amazon.com/Elk-Hunting-Hart-Wixom/dp/B003CHF1DE/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8)
Elknut outdoor productions....tons and tons of first hand info...good stuff
Elknuts playbook is a great read. Small can take with you into the woods and us while hunting. Give Paul a call. Great guy to deal with.
I have successfully bow hunted elk since 1969 and thought I knew it all until I recently read 2 books that surprised me with pearls of wisdom that I will be using this Fall.
Backcountry Bowhunting by Cameron Hanes
Elk Hunting the West The Eastman Way by Mike Eastman
If you really want to learn about elk, the textbook (literally) is Elk of North America: Ecology and Management
It's getting harder to find, but is worth every penny when you do.
thank you all!!!!
