I stopped at Greg's shop today. Wow. I shot an Elkhart , Falcon and some names I can't pronounce. What an artist he is. I'm on the list but I feel pressure to choose a wood (s). They all have a very smooth draw, very light in the hand. I'm in deep now. Multiple bows, who'd a thunk it.
Uh Oh...shoulda warned ya about Gregg's bows...too late, we cant help you now :D
It is too late. So much for you electricians watching out for us dumb carpenters. For not telling me I might need to borrow your couch soon after I take delivery.
Jim,
Was a pleasure meeting you today.
Gregg
Thank you for your time. The pleasure was all mine. Your work is very impressive.
Nice. Well, since you are deciding on woods, which model did you select, and why?
I think I'm going with the Falcon XL although that might change. Very smooth out to my 31" draw. The model he had on the rack was gripped perfect. I also like his take down and how it works. But I liked the Elkheart as well. I'm in line so I have a little time. He had some nice maple in there also. I'm thinking of having woods indigenous to my area might be cool.
I am on the list as well. I am leaning toward a 60" falcon to be similar to my shrew safari, but I have a used 56" TD Elkheart on the way that may make me change my mind and opt fora 58" Elkheart, but we will see. I only draw 29.5".

That's very nice. He had a 58" Elkheart there. The Falcon was 60" I liked the grip better.
Gregg builds some beauties and Man are they performers. He is also one of the nicest guy's out there!!!!
Just picked up a used Elkheart myself that just happened to be what I was in line to order - 56", 50# @ 28 and overall dark hue (for ground blind use) of tamo ash veneers. A beauty of a shooter. Plan on getting back in line again in the near future for a take down.
I am also on his list and should be getting to me in the next couple of months. I am getting his Tanjavur 60" 50@28", I shot one late last year and what a shooter it was, can't wait.
Greg is an artist, builds a great bow, seen a couple in person, quality is as good as it gets and he's a genuinely good guy. Haven't met Greg in person but hope to some day. I've had a couple business dealings with him and some freely shared bow building advice. Can't go wrong with a Javaman bow.

On the list as well, still haven't decided on wood choice. Pretty excited but have awhile yet. Some pics may help on wood choice
Gregg makes a great bow and is a great guy to deal with.

That is very nice. Awesome!
My son picked up a Elkhart from Gregg this past winter. It has become his favorite bow over all his others. The craftsmanship is awesome and the bow is a real joy to shoot.
Beautiful. What are the specs, birdbow?
My Elk Heart will be in the woods this fall. Shooting several bows right now, but another month and they will all get put away except for the Elk Heart and some serious practice.

Gregg is the man!

This isn't making the wait any easier. But fun to look.
Javaman ... Great s bows... GREG
I like the looks of the Falcon XL. I poked around for reviews. They sure are lookers, but wouldn't mind finding out more about their performance. Gregg has a great reputation that's for sure. Next time I am up that way I will see if I can stop by his shop. I am in that general area a bit.
I like longer bows, but am not a Hill Style fan...yet...but I hear people get bit by bugs that cause that disease
I shot one. If it would have been heavier I might have bought it. Very smooth. Excellent grip.
I'm on the "short list" as well. Waitin on a black and white Ebony Helms deep! Can't wait!
PDK25,
The bow is 56", 50# @ 28".The riser is Katalox, the core is bamboo and Uniweft, the lams Tamo ash.
One thing I need to do is learn all these bow woods. I'm a carpenter I know spruce, pine, for, hemlock, oak, maple, ash, poplar etc. you guys talk about wood and wood types it's like your speaking Mandyrin Chinese to me
Chain2, funny you should say that, the tamo ash is a Japanese wood! :)

Haha my dad is the same way. Been a carpenter for 55 years. And he would say the same thing being in trad bows has totally made me a wood geek. Love the stuff. And combinig them. Omg. You should check out the wood database. Hours of entertainment.

X2, I have never heard of a lot of those mentioned and surely do not know what they look like.

Very nice!
Gregg's bows are fantastic! I am back on the list for another Elkheart.
It would be hard to find a better guy then Gregg Coffey. He makes some pretty darn nice bows as well !!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
Beautiful bows!
Gregg is one of the best for sure. I'm on the list coming up at the end of this month. Thinking about a Falcon XL Phenolic handle with all Yew limbs to match my Elkheart. Decisions, decisions!
I started thinking I wanted wood(s) indigenous to my area. Maple, walnut, or elm but I did see some myrtle that caught my eye. I like Osage but I probably couldn't pick it out of a line up
Glowing yellow Osage you probably could pick out of a line up! A bow of Michigan native wood is a great idea. Gregg won't let you down whatever you decide. I've known him close to 20 years now; excellent bowyer but even an even better man.
I don't think phenolic is native to Michigan, but curly maple definitely is :)
Greg used some beautiful maple veneers for my Elk Heart and stained them with some hickory dye to get the dark, slightly reddish color I wanted. It's almost like camo in the woods. He used some fancy cocobolo at my request for the riser, but some highly figured walnut would have worked just as well and would have been native to the area.
Greg will work with you and has a great artistic talent to go with his technical ability.
Your bow looks great. I like the maple. You're right about the walnut, that would be good together.
