Man, I had been out of the buying game for a while. I've been shooting my two bows non stop for years without considering a new bow. So, I log into the auction site to get my feet wet.
I browse like this for a few days to no avail. You know I I whet my whistle, but there was nothing that really caught my eye. There would be a Hill here, a Black Widow there, and a number of production, vintage, and unknowns. I'm sure if you've ever frequented auctions you know that you could search the same thing each day and scroll the same way and see the same listings with no change. So, that's exactly what I had been doing. That was, until something caught my eye today among the drab bows of yesteryear. There it was. A Crooked Stic at my draw, preferred weight, and a takedown to boot. Maybe the sweetest part of all was that she was just the right price.
Now I've seen Crooked Stics before, and I never had one catch my eye, but this thing? This thing screamed beauty. It was a bamboo cored, blonde Birdseye maple veneered limb, running into a 3 tone riser marrying what appeared to be a dark wenge and a grain overflowing cocobolo with that beautiful Birdseye and a black accent of glass between them for contrast. To top it all off it had buck burr bolts for the riser. Okay, I lied, it had one and the other was missing, but so what! This was a dream for me after all.
Here I was just getting interested in a new buy after 6 years (you know the feeling, I know you do), and BAM, someone nabbed it while I was cookin' dinner. I thought I was quick...not quick enough. So fellas tonight I let her slip through my fingers, no fond farewells or nothin'...I didn't even get to hold her. She was ---the one that got away.
So guys, let's reminisce on auction hours missed, failed snipe attempts, and just plain "should I or shouldn't I" procrastination. Don't forget the sweet "love at first sight" feeling either. Who have you let get away?

Thanks Graps, I finally thought I'd get to making a profile since I'd been referencing the forums for years! Yea, today a takedown Pronghorn in the same length popped up to and the price is certainly right for the make, but it just doesn't speak to me. No romance to be had with that plain Jane. That bad taste is going to linger for quite a bit. Fortunately, there's no shortage of bows in the world as far as I know. Well...on to the next affair...
One way of looking at it is: 'You don't miss what you never had'... I've had many, many things slip away..... Just part of it!

The only one my brain says I should have opened the wallet a bit more for was a 1959 56" Kodiak lefty with a low SN, but it was 63# and I worried about it stacking up. :knothead: The only one my heart longs for is the only 192 Browning Diana I've ever seen on the market, and I wanted it really bad for my daughter, but I was stuck in a business meeting when the auction ended and it went for quite a bit less than I would have risked. :( Ive also made snipe bids on unusual bows that I was certain would make a huge jump in the last 30 seconds only to overshoot the mark by 100%. :p
I know your pain. Over the years, I have owned and sold many beautiful bows and learned along the way that buying a bow is like shooting a deer. If you have the opportunity and things are right, you had better pull the string without hesitation. I too, have had many bows that whetted my palate and did not react quick enough. Don't worry though, the right one will appear out of nowhere. Just be ready.

Just got access to the Classifieds last week and it's been 22 years since I bought a new Trad bow so think I could hold back for long? Nah. Sure, I've been away for quite a while so it's not the same as lusting for all that time but still there's been the anticipation of finding a new one.
I'm new enough again to this to not be set on a particular style, brand, model, wood, or length but have to be somewhat considerate of weight - as many here can relate to. Just looking for one to get to know and grow close to.
Yeah, the first one was a miss. Can't say it had slipped away because it had been sold a month before. But there were more - even a good number of lefties. The one I chose is supposed to be here today but just checked AGAIN and it's still in transit. Hope that status gets updated before I get home but tomorrow will do too. Something nice to look forward to over the long weekend.
1966 Kodiak 50# in great condition that only went for $225.00 this week. That is my birth year bow that I have always wanted.
