Title: Carbon arrow suggestions
Post by: TxAg on June 20, 2016, 10:47:00 PM
I received a beautiful set of wood arrows recently but want to save the wear and tear on them. So I also want to make up a batch of carbons.

I'd like to hear some suggestions on a carbon set up for a 52@28 Toelke Super D. I'm actually only drawing this bow 27" or a shade more. I'm not looking for anything too heavy or extreme foc. Just a nice middle of the road arrow for deer.

500 spine with my pika are nice, 600 spine are amazing. Dan told me his bows like a light spine shaft.

500 or 600 spine with 200-250 grain up front? you might be on the line between the two spines, i would get a set of each to play with and see what your bow likes.  do you have a desired gpp?

My set-up and draw length is similar to yours...1967 Bear Super Kodiak, 52#. I shoot FMJ 500's @ 29" with the standard HIT inserts and 145 grain tips. They fly great!

Give Big Jim a call, he is good at matching spines to bows and can fix you up with a set of gold tip blems, and save you some cash.

Like Yeager my set-up is about the same as yours. If I am shooting carbons, Arrow Dynamics Traditional Lites have been my set up for many years, and have never looked back. They are 28" long, and at 550 gr. with brass insert and 175 gr. up front.

Jeff, If Dan says his bows like light spines go with the 600's or a Carbon express 90. They are a little heavier than Gold Tips per inch and are great from my 50 lb bows. I also have a 27" draw. I suggest ordering a test kit of shafts or Big Jim will sell singles I think. All my bows teeter on the fence between .600 and .500's. I have bare shafts in both spines at three different lengths each for testing purposes.

Something like 10-11 gpp would be great

I will second Carbon express 90's at 28-29" and 125 pts. I think 600's may be under spined.

29" 500 spine with 225gr up front shoots great for me from 45-53 lbs out of most bows. My draw is right there with yours

I spoke to Dan today....had to thank him for the new bow. I owe yall some pics!

He suggested a CE Heritage 150 around 29" long with a 150 head. He thought the 90s would be a little weak and I should tinker with the 150s.

Spot on advice, Big Jim's GT blems are all I shoot. My setup for my Bear Kodiak Mag 55# with 50gr. brass insert and 125gr. Magnus 3 blade suffer up front weighs in at around 500 grs. My Gt's are 55/75 400 and with the added wt. up front they flex perfectly. You should also check out Stu's calculator for choosing the correct spine for your set up, it's really good stuff that he spent many hours on. Here's the link....  http://heilakka.com/stumiller/
Hope this helps.

I mostly lurk here, but thought I could share my experience.

I shoot a 53#@28 Whip and also draw to 27". My arrow set up is Gold Tip traditional 35/55 cut to 29 1/4". 175 gr. tip, 50 grain brass insert. Footed with 1 1/4" aluminum on the tip end and 3/8 inch aluminum on nock end. 3 four inch feather, gold tip nocks. Total weight about 525 grains.

Absolutely perfect arrow flight with no wiggles and wobbles as long as I do my part.

Take care, Dave

For future reference, I tried some CX90's today cut to 28" with a 175 gr head. They flew great and weighed in at 475 gr.
