Title: Lightning Longbows - Gordon Morey
Post by: Floridave on June 16, 2016, 06:15:00 AM
Hi all,

I'm new here, but have a lifetime of archery and hunting behind me.  Much of it with recurve and longbows before if was as cool as it seems to be now .  I've been away several years, but again setting up a backyard range and getting back into it now.  At one time I wrote freelance magazine articles and had interviews/articles about Dan Quillian in Traditional Bowhunting mag and Byron Ferguson in another mag before he was so big.  Owned a few versions of both their bows at one time.

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts or knowledge about the Lightning Longbow bows or this bow in particular. It's a Hunter model, two piece longbow 62 inches, 53 lbs.  green stain bamboo front, rattlesnake back.  My photos don't do it justice, it was late evening low light when I took them and the look washed out.  It's really beautiful and feels great in the hand.  Also has a nice Lightning Longbows soft case.

I've not really shot it, only a few times, bought it used several years ago as I was stepping away from these activities for a while.  Just thought it was cool, So it's been hanging on the wall.  Sold all my other bows, and now starting back up with a recurve riser and some lightweight limbs.

Enough of that, for now this bow is more than I can handle until I build back up to it, that age thing you know, but mostly just curious from those with some knowledge about what I really have?  Should I just leave it on the wall or are these bows shooters/hunters?

The snake skin needs a refinish over it, im thinking just some spray on polyurethane?

I had one about 12 years ago, it was a nice bow.  Shoot it.

I had a Lightning longbow several years ago with carbon lam on the back.  It shot great--very fast and nice on release, but I had trouble with carbon fiber slivers coming up  on the edge of the limb and sent it back to Gordy and had it repaired but the same thing happened again and not such good service that time.  I finally gave it to a friend who enjoyed tinkering with bows and had made a few of his own.  I see this one does not have carbon on the back of the limb.  Should be a good one for you.

I have had a couple of his bows.  Well made and shot nice.  Still would like to have a Markert Special.
