Ferret here on Dianne's laptop with an aircard (whatever that is) deep in a northern Wisconsin deer camp. Ain't technology amazing? Ol 46, George Nagel should be joining us tonight or tomorrow morning.
Weather is pretty good for up here. About 38 this morning, and clear. The only deer sightings so far are 2 I saw from my ground blind right at dark last night. No shots.Nothing seen this morning, but Brian isn't in yet from his morning hunt. he's hanging over the only scrape we have found so far. No mast to speak of, don't know what the deer might be eating.
Can't answer PM's on this laptop so Slayer1, I'll get back to you next week when we get home.
Will try and check in occassionally.
Good luck Ferret!!!
Go get 'em, Mickey. Sounds like a good time.
Dang only a year ago he was challenged with a dialup connection and now he's using an "air card". Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
Good Luck!
Mike
Just don't let me catch you with some kind of blue tooth or blackberry thing IN THE STAND, have to draw the line somewhere. Good luck Mickey and George.
don't you get a blue tooth when you eat blackberries?
Good Luck!
Mickey,
Some friend of mine were up hunting in Juneau County last weekend and say they saw a lot of bucks chasing does. That's a bit south of you, but hopefully you'll be into some good activity too.
Good luck! Looking forward to your pics.
Good luck and have a safe hunt :0)
There are no deer in WI. The ones that are left all have CWD. Stay away from WI. LOL
Good luck to you.
Good luck!!!
Gil
 Air card ? geesh Hope you did not forget the digicam. Purty soon you be shootin lam bows. :biglaugh:
Good luck Mickey, looking forward to the "updates".......
David
Enjoy Folks I'll be waiting for a report and pictures.
Well Brian saw two from his stand this morning and "almost" got a shot. He chased some out of the area when he went in this evening, and Dianne sat my ground blind tonight and we chased one away as we went in. I went to a different area and made a small ground blind. One came in behind me that I couldn't see and of course ended up down wind, then it was stomp and blow time ha ha. So we are having some deer encounters. No bucks chasing does that we have seen yet.Still have 4 more days to hunt.
3/4 moon tonight and I didn't think it was ever going to get dark. With most of the oak leaves down where we are hunting, it was just like a giant spotlight shining down.
George didn't make it in yet tonight so I suppose he'll get here around lunchtime tomorrow.
good luck and keep us posted!! don't suppose you can download pictures for us??
Great deer hunting country up there. I love the big woods of northern WI and envy you this week. Ya can hunt for weeks and not see a cornfield. :)
Hope you're keeping that camera busy.
You hunting anywhere near Vilas or Oneida Counties?
I hunt in Vilas county every weekend.
Good luck Mickey and enjoy yourself. Last year when you were in Wisconsin I shot my first deer with a long bow. For that matter my first archery deer. I think I will be hunting Wednesday northwest of you guys close to Dairyland. Maybe you being in Wisconsin again will bring me luck.
While your over there chasing deer, chase some about 225 miles due east. ;)
Good luck lil buddy. I'm on vacation starting wednesday. Hope we all get into some deer. Tell Brian and Di that Shannon and I say hi.
Tom, that's why they call it God's Country.
Mickey, maybe you would see more deer if you weren't playing with your air guitar...OHhhh...air card, nevermind. Where are you hunting, what county/town? I'm headed north friday morning to hunt just NE of Stevens Point, then on Sunday afternoon or evening heading west to another friend's place east of Ladysmith. The following weekend it's up to the tip of Door County. Beautiful country to deer hunt there as well.
Guzzi, how is the hunting by Dairyland? Believe it or not, my mom was born there. I might be the only one here that knows where that is besides you, LOL! Now THAT is out in the boonies!
keep at em Mickey! good luck to you all.....
:archer:
Well in from our morning hunt and nobody saw nuthin..and to rub it in my face, over night some buck made about 5 scrapes down the logging road we walk in on, not 50 yards from my blind. Bastad deers! LOL
Pretty windy this morning making mid 40 temps feel like mid 30 temps.
We are hunting in Burnett county, near Webb Lake (not far from Minnesota). Tom we are due west of
Oneida county by about 4 counties.Want a challenge in bow hunting? Hunt here! No food sources that we have found so far so we are hunting for the wandering and hungry deer LOL
No way to downlaod pics cause Diannes laptop doesn't have that softwear.
Hey Chad can't wait to see what comes off the farm this year 8^) Good luck tomorrow. Tell Shannon we said hey!
Will report in after tonights hunt
Ferret

Of course there's food there somewhere...otherwise the deer would be extinct. :) Gotta get away from that Ohio mindset and stop looking for corn and bean fields.
Also need to lose the one arrow philosophy. Grouse season is in up there and ruff grouse in that country is a real challenge with a bow. If I hunted that country with one arrow I would be out of arrows 20 feet from the truck every morning. :)
Have fun Dianne/Mickey and bring back lots of pics.
Tom there are no acorns even though there are a million oak trees. What else would they be eating up here?
We have seen 2 grouse, both flushed wildly about 30 yards out. Challenge? Yea, I'd say so ha ha
You're just looking in the wrong place all the deer have moved to the burbs. :biglaugh:
Pretty slim pickens this year. I have yet to come across an oak that has any acorns on it around here. I've been out some this year, and apart from a few chatter box squirrels, I had the place to myself. I see more deer coming through town on my way home at night. I even saw a doe once that was standing on a side street , she looked like she was stopped at the sign (in the right lane and all) waiting for me to pass(. lol
Forgot to add ;The only thing dropping any mast in the woods this year is hopeful hunters.
Save a few for me. I'm heading up to the Nicolet on Thursday. Hope it cools off a bit.

Beats me Mickey. I've never hunted that far west in WI, always stayed in Vilas, Oneida, and Price Counties. When in doubt hunt the swamps if you've got'em over there, always something to eat there. Never stand hunted up that way either, just still hunted around 'til I bumped into something. If you're stand hunting find little narrow pieces of high ground that meander through the swamps.
Maybe it's time to visit with the locals. Would probably help to have a Wisconsin Bowhunters sticker in your truck window. :)
Kevin in regards to the hunting in Dairyland it has been pretty good. I had to get used to the bigger woods versus hunting in the farm country. I live about 45 miles east of LadySmith in Barron.I see you will be hunting around Ladysmith. I have to mention to watch out for the bear in that area. A bow hunter was almost pulled out of his stand by an angry sow after one of her three cubs decided to join him in his tree.
Hunting WI northwoods can be quite a challenge. I don't get up that far very often, but last year I managed a small buck at a spot that had been clearcut within the past couple of years. The new growth coming up seemed to draw deer to the area.
One big challenge (and problem) up there is the preponderance of bait piles. The deer flock to the corm piles like magnets - but usually only after dark. They seem to know a good food source when they find one, but they also know where it came from. They get smart in a hury.
Good luck on your hunt Mickey. No matter what the deer are doing you are in one beautiful part of the State during the most gorgeous times of the year.
Mickey, do me a favor and sleep in. Go out and hunt around 10-11 to 2-3 pm. deer movement will be best at mid-day with the moon directly overhead or underfoot. Try it and see, it cannot hurt. Shawn
Well George made it in finally and we got him all unpacked. Was planning on going out but mid afternoon the wind really picked up. The older folk decided to stay in and visit, but Brian being young and impatient decided to go out anyway. Returned about an hour later complaining about the hard wind ha ha
Shawn we may have to give that a try but we wake up at 6 AM anyway so might as well get dressed and see what's walking about.
There is quite a bit of swamp and ponds around here. Will have to wander down that way and check it out.
Mickey, check the Aspen/Alders that are around 5 years old. I would bet the deer are eating twigs and buds.
Hey Mickey have fun and good luck!!!!
Raspberry briars, sumacs, beechnuts young hemlock and perhaps white cedar. Most places round here where you find berry briars will be all nibbled and chewed untit the frost kills off all the leaves.
George slept in this morning, but Dianne, Brian and I went out. Unfortunately Di and Bri saw piney squirrels and I saw nothing.
Going scouting in a bit and trying to find some new spots for this evenings hunt.
High 30's this morning and clear, and the wind died down. Should be a great evening.
You fella's need to go about 150 miles NW to be in Gods Country. LOL. or better yet the BWCA, now that's some pretty country!
Hunting in the big woods sure is tough with a stick and string, even tougher without being able to scout year round. The big woods DO have some monster bucks though!
Sounds like the weather is going to be nice right through the weekend.
Good luck to you.
Ferret, hang in there man maybe something will turn up.
Forgot to mention. Look for logging activity or recent cutovers with some new growth.Deer magnets in Mn. Deer do not get disturbed by these activities and seem to be curious about what is going on and just have to check it out.
Hunting near logging roads or trails deeper in forests also is a good place as they like to come out in the evenings and munch on the grasses next to these. Anywhere sunlight has a chance to penetrate and grow some grass and seedlings.
Been up there alot..ya need to look for edges...where hardwood meets pine.. clear cut meet woods that type of stuff...Funnels or narrowed down terrain features that force Deer movement..if your on a lake there should be movement around it..although there is alot of water in the woods this year..good luck.
Keep at it Lotz's! Tell George hi for me! I'm going out to my ground blind after work tonite myself. I got busted by moonlight 2 nights ago also. Looked like noon out there!
Ferret, that sounds like so much fun. I't's not the deer but the time with friends that counts the most. Jawge
Of course you are right Jawge.
Did it Tom, George says hey back.
Found some nice buck sign this afternoon, a scrapeline and a nice rub. Brian hunted over them tonight and heard one but saw zip. George saw zip. I saw 2 but nothing close. It almost came together for Di tonight. Ground blind in a small opening. She was sitting in amongst some pine trees and we only took out a couple small branches for shooting lanes to help preserve her cover. A doe and a yearling came in once and stayed for 10 minutes eating grass but never offered a shot. Then they left. A little later they came back, again never offering a shot. She had a great time watching them and "hearing" them rip up grass and eat it.
Man the moon is full and bright. 2 more days left to hunt before heading home.
Thanks for all the hunting tips guys. I hunted ane edge tonight at gottabows sugestion, and we have noticed the little buds nipped off the ends of the aspen/poplar trees, and most of the tracks/scrapes we are finding are in the sandy logging roads
Pm sent
Cool for Di! I had a similar situation only there were 6 does within 10 yards of my ground blind. No shot though. I posted the night's events on the daily hunt stories thread. That moon sure was bright eh?
What??? Are you a transplant??? Cheezehead is one word!!!
Bowmania
Transplant? We're just visiting ha ha
Headed out the door in a couple of minutes. Report back tonight.
George sounds like he's adjusted to the retired life, sleepin in at camp
You guy's have a great time!!
Hey Dano. Yea, like you he seems to be adjusting to it well ha ha
Interesting evening. Everyone saw deer but me. Brian saw 2, George saw 3, and Dianne had a spike buck come in and feed on grass practically at her feet and never saw her sitting on a stool less than 5 steps from the end of his nose. Of course he never offered a good shot either, but she enjoyed the experience.
One more day
Yeah, it's cool when they are right there next to you at ground level!
25 DEGREES this morning brrrrrrrrrr and no deer. Lots of grouse hunters up this way.
One more evening and then we're headed home in the morning.
Micky and Dianne,
Good luck to you both. Hoping it is a good Last evening on Stand. I suspect that you have both had a rewarding hunt already. Sounds like Wisconson is a great place to hunt. I have never hunted there, maybe in near future! Get back to Ohio safely.
Harry.
Good luck tonight and have a safe trip home.
Bill
Hope somebody gets a "last minute" deer! Looking forward to some photos when you return.
Thanks Ferret. Good luck to you!
Headed home deer less but happy none the less. I saw 3 deer tonight, nothing close and George saw 1 standing beside his truck when he came in. Di and Bri saw zip.
Will post some pics tomorrow night or Sunday depending on how tomorrows drive goes.
See ya
Ferret
Welcome to the promised land. :D (...points to name)
BTW, if you're looking for some pics of native Wisconsin bucks, here is the link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14198677@N02/sets/72157602422210733/detail/) to some of the nicer ones (well that and just some neat pics) from my trail cam this year.
I've been out a few weeks and didn't have access to my computer so didn't see this thread until now. Too bad you didn't see more deer. I have some land a little farther north in Douglas County. (Near Dairyland, Kevin).
Anyway, I think your experience is fairly typical of those hunting the Wisconsin north woods, particularly in the northwestern part of the state. There are several differences between the deer in the far northwest and those in the central and southern part of the state.
First, there aren't as many of them, but when you find them, they tend to be bigger. They generally have bigger bodies and longer legs to handle the deeper winter snows. Severe winters (of which there haven't been many recently) and predation (bears on fawns in the spring and wolves all the time) and, of course, hunting, keep the deer numbers lowers in the north.
I live in the southern part of the state, and on a 120 acre farm I used to hunt there, it was not unusual to see 20-30 deer a day, a half-dozen or so or those bucks. In the north, I have access to thousands of acres of public land and can go for several days dark to dark without seeing a deer.
Second, in the big woods, they're just not as patternable. You won't see the same bucks in the same place every day. The bucks travel a larger circuit, particularly during the rut. Also, their natural movements have been severely altered by baiting. Due to the prevalence of baiting in the north, a lot of deer simply move out of good habitat to be near bait. They may be nearby, a quarter or half-mile away, but that doesn't do the hunter any good. Many also become nocturnal near baits. They're learning that it's dangerous to come into baits in the daytime. In short, baiting changes their feeding patterns and movements. Baiting congregates them, and they don't follow normal feeding/bedding patterns.
They're also a lot more wary, particularly since the reintroduction of wolves. Where the wolves are back in strong numbers, including where you were hunting, the deer seem as if they're on pins and needles all the time.
All that being said, there's no other place I'd rather hunt. You have to work at it, but it is possible to get away from baited areas, and when you do, you can still hunt truly wild and wiley deer. Take one of those, and you've done something.
Hope you'll come back and give it a try again next year. And if you do, come a week or two later. They'll start chasing this week, and the rut will likley kick in about Nov. 5-7 or thereabouts.
Well here's to arriving home safe and happy!
Well home safe and sound. 13 1/2 hour drive home. Not too bad i suppose. Passed thru a lot of good looking land in southern Wisconsin.
Orion I found everything you said to be true.
I've hunted it 2 years in a row now without drawing my bow back. That's hard hunting when you are used to seeing deer nearly every day. I called my bro on the way home this evening. He hunted last night and had one small buck and 6 flatheads in shooting distance..more chances than 4 of us had in Wisc in 6 days of hunting mornings and evenings. My hat is off to those who can take deer out of there on a regular basis.
But..the week wasn't just about hunting it was about visiting George, lounging in his beautiful cabin by the lake, making and eating lots of good food and seeing lots of beautiful scenery. In that respect it was a Boone and Crockett huting trip.
I'll post some pics tomorrow. Haven't even unpacked the truck yet and the camera is outside.
Good to be home.
Frank and Shell...did you hear me yell out the window when we passed by? LOL
Yep sure did. We been standing outside since 5AM  :bigsmyl: .LOL We do plan on doing everything we can to make it to a shoot next year that you and Dianne will be at. Don't know why but got this powerful urge to meet you guys. :bigsmyl: <><
Great to see you two made it home safe.
Frank, once you meet Mickey and Dianne, you'll say "Dang!!! That Mickey has fine taste in women" :bigsmyl:
That would be great Frank
Danos right .... I got really really lucky :bigsmyl:
How about beginning with a nice Wisconsin sunrise?

The shrooms were out in force. For some reason I love taking pictures of shrooms. George mentioned that he thought it had something to do with my time in the 60's

we took our chocolate lab "Sage" (short for sweet osage) with us on this trip
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/2007_10260019.jpg)
He really enjoyed "scouting" and accompanying us while we shot stumps mid day.The ticks were awful both wood ticks and deer ticks and we picked a bunch off of him. Poor dog, he's never had a flea or tick before. Picked a bunch of the little deer ticks off of us too! YUK
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/2007_10260008.jpg)
Ferret, sounds like you had a great time anyway. Hope you don't give up on the great northwoods. I have found that most everything I knew (or thought I knew) about hunting in TX didn't apply when I moved up here. I'm still trying to figure it all out.
Glad the Lotz clan made it home safely...and in record time.
Yep, it was a Boone and Crockett hunt as far as good company, good friends, good food and a fine time was concerned.
These northern woods are BIG, as earlier said the hunting is hard and these deer are skittish as all getout, the wolves keep 'em on their toes :( . Up here, unless you do drives with guns, a nice deer taken with a stick and string is a real trophy no matter the size.
The bucks'll be goofy in a week or so chances are better then.
Mickey, ya have some fine pictures there, I hope ya post a few more....Dano, he DOES have a shroom fixation, don't know what thats all about But I do know he had long hair...when he had hair LOL :D
Mic, I found a familiar looking brown wool hat in my driveway this morning, I'll mail it along to you. Can't remember ever hunting with you when you wern't wearing it.
Why do I feel like something is crawling on me all-of-a-sudden? ;)
Ick I hate ticks!
Beautiful spot up there Ferrett/George. Sounds like a nice relaxing trip.
Randy, yea once you find one you feel them on you all the time even if there aren't any ha ha
Will post more pics in a bit George, we're busy unpacking. Did we really have this much stuff up there? LOL..oh and we have 2 pieces of your tupperware (left overs) we'll mail back up when we empty them.
Just took pics of about 20 turks in the back yard..one of them strutting. Will post that pic later too.
Great pic's, Ferret. Sorry about the hunting luck, but hanging w/ bud's is just as good. Larry
Sometimes we would practice shooting off the deck simulating tree stand shots
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/2007_10260025.jpg)
and sometimes we just walked the logging roads finding suitable targets to fling at
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/2007_10260020.jpg)
sometimes we just picked a leaf on a dirt mound..here the Lotz clan didn't do too bad (lots of leaves ha ha)
and here Dianne showed us how it was done nailing this little stump from about 25 yards
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/2007_10260054.jpg)
Looks like a pretty good time to me, nice pics too Mickey. I can't remember a trip to the big north woods of NH with friends that wasn't successful, whether or not we shot or saw anything, not always about killing now is it......thanks for sharing Mickey. :campfire:

Glad you made it both safe. Thanks for the pics and stories.

Great pictures, Mickey. Sorry you didn't fill a tag, but it looks like you had a great time with some good friends. And those are the best hunts of all.
Great pics Mickey thanks for sharing. By the way what bow is the Mrs. shooting?
True indeed Jason
bentpole..that's a vintage Rocky Mountain recurve.
Thanks for the story and pics Mickey. I am headed over to cheezeland next weekend and into the week to visit with Whip and try the Packer fan deer. Rut will hopefully be on except for Sunday afternoon when even the bucks kick back and watch the game.
Good luck over there Shaun. The Pack is doing much better than our Bengals again this year. We wasted another afternoon in front screaming at the tube today. Sometimes you just have to wonder why we bother ha ha
You could make it easy Mickey and become, dare I say, a Patriots and Sox fan....... :bigsmyl:
David
Dang David after watching the Pats this afternoon..Holy Cow!
Next week is the superbowl game as far as I'm concerned.

Welcome to my life. :(

Nice of you to let us be a part of your trip. Thanks!
Great pics! I got a new computer background today!
Ah, the photos and stories were worth the wait! Beautiful country.
Thanks for sharing Mickey, now that I know you like pictures of mushrooms I will have to go take a picture of one I saw yesterday growing out of the side of an old tree. it started out horizontal to the ground and then made a 90 degree turn heading toward the sunlight.
Jeff, about another week or two and the bucks should be all over the farm looking for love
shrooms are misunderstood..unlike flowers that get all the oohs and ahhs, shrooms come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colors and hardly anyone appreciates them (cept the Morels which are about the ugliest shrooms there are and have some naasty nick names thanks to their general shape)
Love to see that one Wood Butcher
hey mic
I new you were a rcky-mtn recurve fan, whats the specs?
I picked one up this summer from don jones, I bet I've been looking for one for close to 20 yrs. than just after I bought it I put it back up for sale because I really didn't have money to buy it. as it turns out it didn't sell and I'm going to build some lighter limbs for it so my son can hunt with it next year (his first hunting season)
by the way thanks for the hunt-along!!
Brian the Rocky Mt's liimbs are built differently with the wedge being "upside down" compared to most bowyers limbs.I think my brother still has his form for duplicating them.
That one is Dianne's 40 something pounds. Mines 57# and I had a set of 62# limbs for mine but gave them to Dean Torges buddy Lew when his original limb broke.
I also have a couple that my brother and I made which are duplicates of the original which as you know are no longer being made.
I remembered you had bought JD's (Can't believe HE sold it) and then put it up for sale. Wonderful bows.
Wow! Great pics, Ferret. I am glad you had a good time. Almost as good a time as I had this weekend. :) Jawge
Was out for a walk last night and found the shroom for you Mickey.
I also love the pictures of your dog Sage out in the woods. I had to to let my dog Tucker in on the act, as he went with me to get the picture of the shroom.
Enjoy, Glenn
Ahh cool pic Glen. Thanks.
Is that a Weimeriemer (sp). Pretty dog. I take it hes a good grouse dog? That's the kind of coat a dog needs for up there. Holy crap I'm still picking those nasty ticks off my dog. I must have found 25 so far. They start out about the size of a pin head and end up as big as your baby finger nail. Nasty! Why on earth would God invent ticks?
Turkeys eat ticks. YUK!
Yeah we is a weimaraner, been with me the last 11 years. He has retrieved pheasants, doves and geese but here in north central IL. we don't have any grouse to chase. Here lately he has become a " sitter pointer" type dog, sits in the living room and points to the kitchen. My wife says he is getting that from me.
Micky, great pic of you and Dianne. Kinda reminds me of me and my better half when we get all dressed up.
