Title: A bow with dirty limbs
Post by: MnFn on May 31, 2016, 11:47:00 AM
Awhile ago, I asked about dirty limbs and how they are made.  Here is the reason I asked about the process involved in making them.

It looks like perfect camo to me.
Rampart 54# 62" takedown longbow.

There is something "hot" about a good set of dirty Boo limbs!

I hope the Dryad guys see this.  They are the kings of dirty boo.  My little Sheepeater they made is outstanding with huge dark streaks.

Yes, I REALLY like them as well Keith.  This one is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  Just a wonderful bow to shoot.  The "deadest" bow in the hand at the release that I have shot, and so quiet. Just plain pleasurable. A shame they aren't made anymore.

I have a Dryad one piece longbow that started out as a blank...it turned out to be a higher draw weight than the original buyer wanted and he just never got around to doing anything to reduce the weight...he did fortunately do a nice job of shaping the riser...I bought the bow for about 150 bucks and shot it for a bit the way it was drawing 67 or 68 pounds...then one day I decided to try to lower the draw weight...I used what I call a semi-trap method, essentially just taking the corners off the belly side of the limbs...I scribed a line down the edge of the limbs and then beveled them to the line trying to be as uniform as possible to maintain tiller...anyway I dropped the draw weight by about 5 pounds, more by luck than good management, and the bow shoots fine...now for the point of the story...as mentioned the limbs, with clear glass, look very much like the picture...the only thing I did is cross hatch the shiny glass a bit with sandpaper to knock down the glare...and yes those limbs have a great natural camo look...the riser is osage and it has now darkened to a rich amber colour...just a great looking yet simple bow

I think the effect comes from flame tempering the bamboo
