Title: 450+ string material
Post by: jackdaw on May 23, 2016, 03:35:00 PM
Good afternoon shooting  compatriots..!! A friend of mine recently gave me a full spool of 450 + string material, And I wonder how many of you have experience with this material? From what I understand it is very low stretch High performance string material...???? Not only that, it is white! And from what everybody says therefore blazing fast...??? (Lol)..! Interested to hear from you guys what the general consensus is on this material.....Thanks in advance!.....Jackdaw

I have one longbow string made of 450+ and I like it. Fast and quiet.

It is a very strong string material and is a pretty large diameter per strand.I made a lot of my skinny strings with it.I shot up to 60# with a 6 strand 450+,would shoot a 8 strand on my 65# 21st Century Edge.Ron's Super Shrew's would come with a 6 strand 450+.A 6 strand 450+ is about the same diameter as 8 strand D97,a 10 strand 8125 and 12 strand 8190.A 6 strand 450+ is about .060 diameter and I would need to double serve mine to get the nock fit I wanted.Double serving would make for a nice rounder serving then laying strands underneath to make for a larger diameter.First with a .017 3D serving and then serve with .021 XS62 just over the finger area.It is fast, quiet and no creep. It is one of the strongest per strand material out there. This has been my experience with 450+.When I was making my skinny strings 450+ was my go to string choice.

If I remember correctly it is a blend of SK75 dyneema(D97) and vectran to add stability. A very nice material with low stretch, especially for free.

30% Vectran, 70% SK75 Dyneema.  BCY doesn't call it white, but rather "natural".  Look close and you can see the off-white part (that's the Vectran).

One of the more stable (very low stretch/creep)materials, although it has a soft feel to it.  450 Premium came before it...there was one other, but I can't remember the name off hand.  The one I can't remember was the very first HMPE blended bow string material (invented by Bob Destin of BCY).  450+ is the predecessor of 452X and BCY-X.

Good material, not the absolute fastest (all else being equal) due to the Vectran, which is heavier;  but the difference is minimal.  Very quiet in my experience.  I didn't like to use less than 10-12 strands.  Static breaking strength was around 155# per strand.

Down-side is it gets fuzzy faster than most other materials, and in colors the colors aren't as bright and get dull quicker.

Love it since it's inception!

Dan Quillian also used it on his bows.

When I was building strings for Jim/ Centaur, Ultra Cam was on his bows, but "his" bow was braced with a 450 I built for him.

I stand corrected--450 Premium was the first blended material.

I love 450+. Once settled in about zero creep, great feel to it at the release, quiet and IMO not a snappy string- it feels forgiving rather than harsh.

Good stuff.  Just about all I use now.  8 strands padded to 12 in the loops served with .024 halo gives me perfect nock fit with Easton X nocks.  If using 10 strands then serve with .021 halo.

I find these blended strings very stable in a wide range of temperatures as well.

That's one of the big benefits to me.  BCY-X (17% Vectran, 83% SK90 Dyneema) is my current favorite and has been since it came out.  I like 18-20 strands (very small diameter thread).

I believe BCY-X is what Dan Toelke uses to string his SS recurve but confirm that before you go repeat it. He uses a endless loop for that bow.

Been making all my longbow strings with it for years...stuff doesn't wear out.  What fuzz you get at arm guard area blends right back in with wax.

The fuzz is actually fibers breaking...usually the Vectran.  It's tough stuff, but it does wear.  How much depends on strand count, draw weight, how much you shoot, etc.  My suggestion is, when you start seeing a good bit of fuzz, change the string.

I use all 450+ and now X and never see fuzz. Love the material.
