You could get really, seriously lost there, it is the biggest wilderness area east of the Missippi.
-
Bob...sent you an email....but it got returned.
Email me at.....

Is there any way of viewing some info about the Cohutta as far as license , access , seasons etc....
-
I would like to go and open up a can of TradGang on em myself.
-
Sounds like a blast. Keep us posted on your success. I'd be able to get over there without too much fuss!

Terry;
Your pictures are answering all my questions.
Whether pigs are sighted are not, the place definately looks worth the trip.
I just hope I can squeeze it in before Feb. 28th. That is the end of the season isn't it?
-
I'd love to go if there is an "Old Farts" area that would not not require climbing mountains and steep ridges. Between a bad back and mild emphysema, I would probably cramp you young
healty guy's styles.
How about it Terry. Any areas with easy to moderately strenuous hunting opportunities? I have no problem walking several miles as long as it ain't up. Course if it's down, I've got a problem once I get to the bottom. LOL! Will a GPS unit work in the lower areas this time of year with most of the leaves off?
-
Yep......small game season closes Feb 28th.
Yep.....there's a few 'old farts' areas.
Yep.....we might be able to put a hunt together. Least for a Saturday...but I might could come up and get some guys started during the week if need be. Its been calling me pretty bad since I only got to hunt it for 4 days during bow season.....back in Sept.
-
Believe it or not.....that's about 3000 ft elevation....off the side of Bald Mt.....ferns off the north, and briars off the south.
There's shear cliffs, and places flat as a pancake....there's places you can see 300 yards, and places you can't back through. There's 2 wild and scenic rivers, and countless rough creeks.
95,000 acres of WMA, and 33,000 acres of Wilderness slap dab in the middle.
Aint skeered of bears are ya?
-
WOW, it would be worth the trip just to see the place! Can't wait to come down and check that place out!
Matt
-
Hey Bob, how long of a trip are you figuring from Clarksville? I know at the rabbit hunt the idea of a hog hunt in east Tenn. was tossed around. But that place looks pretty awesome.
Ethan
-
Bald is not a bad area to hunt south west side of the ball field is easy walkin , tearbritches trail can get rough. bear wont bother you odds are you wont see any they denned up now or probably low acorns didnt hit at 3000 this year most were at 200 or lower in the fall seen 4 bear and pack of hogs no shot.
better carry meat sack you wont want to drag up there.
-
Hey T,
You know I am willing and mostly able! With a little notice Dan and me will be up there in a jiffy! This may be a way to work off the holiday overconsumption. I'd bet we could get hogless and JC, and maybe even those more southern guys (SOS, Oconee Dan, Lynell, etc.) to come up. Man, I love that place!
Neil
-
Sat Feb 24th?......that's the only Saturday I can get in....and have no problem running up there for a one day dash.
And like I said earlier.....if someone wants to start hunting during the week, I'd be glad to try an help them out logisticaly, and meet them up there if possible.
-
NEB.....we need to get a trip with about 4 of us and go to Panther Buff sometime too...and come out Panther Creek.
-
I can probably the do 24th....
-
24th is the Turkey convention weekend but I might not go this year if not Im in. Terry Panther bluff sounds good to me yall want to pack in and camp or Day hunt.We can go in at 3 forks and do a loop
-
Major....probably not do Panther this hunt....just trying to get my 'Cohutta fix'...and give a few a little taste....the 'Panther Loop' would be more like a full course meal :D
-
Yall have fun!!

North East GA.
-
What's the nearest town?
-
Chatsworth is closest.
-
Dang, too far from home again :(
-
Yep, the side we enter from Chatsworth is the closest. Due east from Dalton GA. Dalton is right off of I-75. We enter from several locations off of HWY 411 that also runs north and south.
Guru......there's always the TBG hunt in Sept. which includes deer and bear.

24th too far away Lets Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
if I'm looking at map quest right it's only 7 hours away. That might be doable?
-
Here's a nice Cohutta boar...and a nice fat bear. Compare the two in size.

-
why didnt you shoot em
-
Hey gentlemen. Was wondering if I might tag along on this hunt as well. I'm not that far from Cohutta, but never had the chance to hunt it before. It'd be great if I could get some guidance from those in the know.

-
Sorry for the hovering light.....don't have a scanner, so I had to take a digital pic of the paper pic.
Out of season gobbler.
-
ROH
Sounds like a plan.
All I need to know is exactly where and when.
I suppose we can establish the details as the date gets closer.
Looking forward to it!!
John V.
-
I'm really lookin' forward to this one. Can't wait to meet you guys.
Terry, I may try to drive up one day soon just to find the area that we would meet up at. Could you post directions from Calhoun? Can I get there with two wheel drive?
Thanks.....Chuck
-
TTT
-
Cool pics, Terry. next time, tilt the photos away from you while snapping the digitals. The angle won't be very obvious. If you get reflected light, it's not tilted enough.
Dan
-
Tried that Dan.......didn't look so hot....need to take the pic outside so there's no flash.
I'll get some directions up in a bit.
-
Thinkin bout hittin jigger creek area unless there is snow up high
-
Chuck.....yeah, you can get there with 2 wheel drive.
From Calhoun get on 225 going north toward Chatsworth......go untill you come to a big intersection with 4 lanes and a turning lane at a red light.....turn right on that 4 lane and get in the left hand lane.
When you get to HWY 411, there will be a red light and a RR crossing in view, take a left on 411 and go about 8-10 miles to Cisco and you will see the rock church on the right.
Major,
If Bob or Chuck comes up early, that's where I'm going to take them.....a lot of that area can be 'old farts' area if they want to roam that, and there still some good hill climbing as well if they want to get there heart rate up a bit.
But, I'm not so sure about the critters being run off from in there after that 'special hunt' they are having the weekend before. High Powered rifles ......and if they open up all the gates.....that area will be disturbed to say the least.
-
Terry Im an Ole Fart too!!!! Just a Hillbilly one
Gonna try to get a couple trad buddies from Tenn to join in also
The gun hunt starts this week and goes to 8th
I dont think It will get hammered too hard this time of year. Jigger would be good in that everyone can meet at cottonwood patch camp
Unless it snows then we need to go high and ride til we see where they are crossin Plus we can have a trad snowball fight
-
Terry,
Dan and I were talking about Panther Bluff last season. We both got close, and the sign was unreal. I noticed that there are not many people making it that far in. Panther trail is very narrow, and until the DNR mowed it before opening day, the briars were taking it over (read that to mean not even hikers are going down that trail!). It would deffinately be a big boys hunt, because getting a critter out of there is 1,000 to 2,000 feet up and 2 to 3 miles out no matter which direction you go! We both decided it would be a place we go and spike camp overnight. Oh man, I am getting all jittery thinking about this one. Feb. 24 sounds good for a day trip.
-
Georgia primitive weapons lic - $25
WMA Lic - $73
I'll be up that way on the 23rd and 24th, probably around Murrays lake, hope to meet some of you guys then.
-
Neil,
I'm afraid SOS tain't going to make this one - don't know about any of the other southern boys - or even the eastern gang. Knee surgery in 2 days with hopes of being able to hunt Ossabaw 2 weeks later. Ossabaw is FLAT! And Cohutta is........NOT! Ossabaw greatest elevation change maybe 10 feet. Cohutta, maybe 2000! Ouch.
Don't forget to come by and shoot if you are in town.
Steve
-
Looks like fun..someday.
-
Dang, you guys sure know how to make a hunt sound fun. If our group of Michiganders didn't already have a fort Stewart hunt planned starting this weekend, we's sure love to join you. None of us have ever been hog hunting and it sure would be nice to get a few pointers from the masters... :notworthy:
Good pics Terry...I've hunted black bears numerous times before and was wondering if my tackle was going to be effective on pigs. Looks to me like them pigs are just short haired bears. Must be that warm Georgia weather...
:>)

All you guys that are saying 'some day'....3rd weekend in Sept......that's normally the annual TBG bear hunt at Cohutta.....which also includes hogs and deer.
This is more than just a hunt, its an adventure unto itself, rugged terrain can be found just out of camp...but there is also some mild roaming here and there. There are two wild and scenic rivers in the wilderness, dozens of ruff and tumble creeks and streams, cliffs, waterfalls, hemlocks as big around as a VW bug, and mountain laurel galore. Its a very beautiful place, and makes for a nice Sept Hunt since its usually cooler here than in most parts of GA and even parts of surrounding states.
We had a fun crew last Sept...and want to make it even bigger and better....so make plans now for 'someday' in Sept 2007.
More Cohutta fun stuff.... (http://www.tradgang.com/videos/tg/tracks.wmv)

Dan

There just ain't enough Septembers in a year! lol
-
Rob, one of these Septembers I hope to be trackin them bugle boys with you....and hope you get to come chase hogs and deer here with me.
-
Where can a feller get some maps of this place???
-
gohuntgeorgia.com has a pdf map...
-
I will make it down this September, Lord willing.
-
JC , lookin forward to it!
-
Does anybody have lat/lon for the campground you guys are going to be at? I'd love to be able to meet you.
-
Pete dont think we know yet if snow we will be high if not low
high up around Bald Mtn low probably meet over by Connasauga and Jacks River at Cottonwood patch campground
What yall think Terry and J.C.
-
Thanks gobbler10ga, Is the cottonwood patch campground on the eastern side? I can't find it on any maps.... My buddy has only been on the western side of the WMA.
-
its on the west side if you see the check in station on the map its past it on the rd from cisco its where east cowpen rd is. up near jacks river
-
Thanks gobbler10ga, I think we'll be able to find it now.
Pete
-
Just to let you guys know tried to go in to Cohutta from the blueridge side this weekend and the gates up at the Jacks river fields campground. and also heard it was up at potatopatch. Did not even open them for the hunt that started Friday dnr said they and some more were closed the rest of the winter
-
I will make a call before the hunt and find out.they shouldnt be on the west side
-
HEY ISNT THAT WHERE THEY SHOT DELIVERANCE?
-
Deliverance was on the Chatooga River, on the GA/SC border. Another nice place.
Dan
-
I'd rather they keep the gates locked.
-
Just got a report on some hog sign.
Hey Terry I want to chase them hogs that drop them dollar bills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yeah......less people, less vehicle traffic, less noise, less disturbance.
A good friend of mine, Doug Johnson, and I were working an area pretty hard for 3 years that was on the Management Area....we saw bears every bow season...and every year we saw more hogs.
Now you gotta remember, we saw more hogs the 3 weeks before bow season opened cause we were on the move scouting than when we were set up on bears. But the sitings and sign doubled from the 1st year, and then doubled again the from the 2nd year.
Now in 2006 'they' decided to grade the road a month before the season and replace some old culverts.......the area was null and void of hogs and sign.
See, them critters are in there ALL year with the gates only opened for 1 week during gun season. So, the roads aren't considered 'cautious' till the gates open up. They might still cross the road....but they are much less likely to mill around near the road, or use the road for travel.
Opening up the gate an allowing people to just drive in and hunt...or just drive in and turn around displaces them for a bit. This usually happens only during gun season....but now they are having these 'special' gun hunts for hogs so they will get displaced again. These animals aren't use to being bothered, vehicle noise on these closed roads, and over trampling...so they just leave the area all together cause they got so much acerage.
For years they had a small game season that opened August 1st...but they didn't allow you to kill hogs(go figure), but they did allow it this year, but we didn't get to scout at all due to being too busy with all the rest of our lives.
All the gates that get opened are on the Management Area....not the Wilderness.
Again, if anyone wants to hunt this beautiful area, there will be an annual TBG hunt bout the 3rd weekend in Sept for bear, deer, and hogs.
-
Up for Titan_Bow
-
I would like to plan a hunt here in 2008. How is the hunting pressure when you get a few miles back in? Would I be better off going the first of August before they've seen several months of hunting pressure?
-
Titan,
There's not a lot of pressure at Cohutta, cause its so vast, and there wont be a 'flock' of people up there August 1st, or anytime before bowseason really. Not that many are going to hunt or scout much due to the heat we'll still be having.
There's a lot of guys that hunt up there, and the biggest crowds will be there the 1st two weekends of bow season....and the 'flock' will come during the gun season....and most of them don't hunt very far from the road, however, the gates will be open on the Management area, so that gives them more easier access to some areas that are better left locked.
Believe me, there's plenty of room anytime you go, cept opening weekend gun season....and even then, you can go a mile or two into the Wilderness and get lost.
-
Terry,
what are the best times of the year to hunt hogs at Cohutta? I don't mind a little heat personally, so I was entertaining the notion of just heading on down in August when small game season starts! :D Aside from personal discomfort, are there any pros/cons to hunting that time of year? Are there better times of the year to hunt there?
Matt
-
OK, Terry I just got to get down to Cohutta one of these days and I would love to hunt it with you and some of the other guys. I looked at my calendar for the 3rd week end in Sept. I will just be getting back from bears in Ontario so it is out for this year. If anything happens latter in the year send me a note and I will try to make it.
One of these years I will make it.
RayMO
-
Like I said earlier......I've seen more hogs in August while scouting without a bow in my hand than I have during bow season while hunting bears.
Now you can kill hogs during the small game season starting Aug 1st.....so that's is a really good time cause the critters haven't had any pressure at all for 6 months, and they will be around or close to water most likely.
-
THAT'S what I am talkin about! August first though? I looked at the regs and they still read 9/15 as the beginning of small game. WHOO HOO! Can't wait to do some S & M (Sweat & Mosquitos) hunting in GA in the late summer sun! Thanks for the info Terry!
Matt
-
Matt, small game usually opens the 2nd saturday in August....the printed regs aren't available until August 1st but you should see them online around May.
-
Yeah, sorry about that...it does usually open up around the 10th-12th...somewhere around there.
Thanks Joe.
-
I been watchin this thread, and have to ask Terry what your tactic is for bears? Oaks, corn fields, or can you bait in Georgia? Lastly do they run hounds for bear?
Here in eastern NC it is corn fields in Nov or MAYBE hard mast if you can find it. but mostly fields. But then you have the dog hunters to contend with, but sometimes they stir them up.
Might plan for that September hunt. Sounds like fun.
Later
Jason
-
Yeah the gated roads would be a God send!! I cannot agree more. Gate at least some of them in my area and you would see some better still hunting.
Jason
-
Tuff hunting, but very rewarding just sighting the critters.
He's what little I know.....
Hunt white oaks....big ones. Try and find some on a Mt. top, knoll, ridge or long slopping lead. Personally, I haven't had as much luck hunting IN the bottoms. I think they must work their way down, and get in the bottoms after dark. I have had luck with major leads that end up in the bottoms.
The bears will most likely be climbing the white oaks the 1st two weeks of the season, then gathering underneath the rest of the season.
Try your best to find white oaks with claw marks and white oak groves with lots of scat and other bear sign. If more than one bear is using the area, then your odds of a sighting are increased dramatically.
Travel funnels between two oak groves is also a great place to set up if you can't decide which tree they are bound to hit. Look for trails twice as wide as deer trails, and a bear trail will have a 'packed down' texture vs the crunched up of a deer trail.
Pre scouting a week or days before the season opens is much more productive than 2 weeks before.
The best tip I can give you is to hunt a single tree with lots of scat near it....BUT!!!, you must find at least one fresh pile....how fresh? With flies on it!!!...if a pile aint got flies on it, I keep a walking.
Sparse acorn crop?...gotta wear out some boot leather to find the few trees that are producing. Can be tuff to find, but once you do, the bears will be there.
Normal acorn crop?....sign will be easier to find since the bears are moving a lot from tree to tree, and scattered about a bit more.
If we have a drought?...and all the acorns fall just before the season?....then I don't commit to any trees or groves, I walk and walk and walk, cause the bears will not have to move for food, you will have to find them. Walk travel routes like mentioned before, but try to walk those with known running water near by, since water will be scarce during a drought as well.
Afternoons are better than mornings, but that don't keep me from hunting mornings. I've seen them as late as 10 am.
While walking in, pay attention to 'loud squirrels' in the trees...they may be a bear. If so, stalk the tree from down wind, and wait for the bear to climb down. Now, pay attention to the tree, you may need to get cross wind. If the tree is straight with no obstructions, there's no telling where he'll climb down. But, if the tree is leaning, or on the side of a steep ridge, or has some obstruction to one side, the bear will take the easy route down at the base.....clear from obstruction, up hill side, or least steep side if the tree is leaning. So, set up accordingly the best you can with the wind still in your favor.
The early season seems to congregate bears in higher elevations, and they work there way down in elevation, since the acorns will mature earlier up hi. Now bear in mind, that some times there is a late freeze in the spring, so those higher elevations will be void of sign due to the buds getting nipped. If that is the case, then move down the mountain a 1/3 of the way, and scout your way down. However, I have seen bears low the 1st part of the season, so the higher elevation is a guideline, not written in stone.
Two weeks before the season will be the tailing end of the last 'patten' before the acorn feed, and might be tempting, but don't fall for it. If you scout early, you will possibly find sign in berry patches, around wild cherry trees, and in dead pine groves the pine beetles devoured because of the grubs in the rotting pines. Unless you are in the highest elevations in GA, this should be what you will find. If you are in the highest elevations, then you should find them already on the acorns unless of course there was a late freeze in that area.
Another thing to look for is saddle ridges between two tops....or connecting leads. The right ones will have a trail suddenly appear as the knoll narrows through the saddle, and then it will disappear just as quick as it nears the next knoll or lead.
Seems the bears pilfer around these ridge tops, and use the 'spines' to travel to the next 'pilfering' area.
These trails can be 100 yards long, or 1000, but the trails will be packed down, not 'crunched' up like deer trails, and wide....and, most likely, it will meander by every mature white oak along the way.
One more thing.....
If you do decide to hunt in the Morning....and you have a REALLY hot spot....don't go 'into' it while its still dark. Lay back a little distance till dawn, and ease in there.....that way you wont blow em out...and you will have the added thrill of an early morning stalk.
Be ready to not only see bears, but deer and hogs as well. When bear hunting, I've seen more bears and hogs than deer in the GA mountains. And don't let anyone kid you, there are 200 pound plus hogs roaming the mountains.
-
Thanks Terry, that is some great info. So what is the weather and bugs like the first of August? I assume it is not very nice..thermacell??
RayMO
-
Dang Terry you left out the best part DRAGGIN THAT CRITTER OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
-
okay, driving directions from Harrodsburg, KY ! whats the name of the nearest town that i can get an idea on my driving time. thanks in advance, excellent thread!
-
HEY, that sound s like my kind of bear huntin.I tried bowhuntin bear in the TN early season this year and thought I had a good chance after finding two bunches of white oaks that were just mauled.Moved in like Terry said, just after daylight,no bear ,so took a stand to wait all day if need be.Saw 17 dogs that day,so moved to second bunch the next day, more dogs.I was heart broken, all the leg work and planning wasted because of dog hunters. If GA's bear season is dogless in the early hunt I may join ya in Sept if an invitation is open. :saywhat:
-
Ray,
Most of the time its hot.......but have worn a polar tech on opening day once. Bugs aren't really too bad, but the thermacell should be in your back...if the skeeters aint bad, the no-seeums might be.
Randy,
Chatsworth GA........or Dalton GA if Chatsworth aint on the map. :D
Robert,
Sure its open......c'mon down!
-
Thanx Terry,if I aint busy I might take you up on it.
-
Well,...looks like the flame blew out.....thought we might have a big crowd.
Anyone going Saturday?
-
I've got 3 native pastors from Kenya at my house this weekend so I will be ferrying them among speaking engagements at my church and other ares. Sorry, would loved to have done this but needed to step up for this one.
Looks like my next hunt will have to wait...thank God it's just 2 more weeks till Texas Sweat :readit:
-
Boy I'd be all over this if I had the time. Bunny hunting at Shawn's this past weekend snapped me out of my winter funk. Willkeep Sept. in mind.

will know tommrrow or Fri

If anyone finds out before me if there was a late frost up there this morning, please post on this thread.
I'm fixing to break out my zoom binos and check from my driveway...but I don't know if I'll be able to see for sure.
If there was a frost this AM.....there will be no reason to have the camp on top this year....there wont be any acorn up there, and everyone will have to drive low.....so we'll pic a lower elevation camp.
-
Terry: I don't know about up on top, but it supposedly froze the entire N. GA apple crop and most of the peaches as far south as Macon. Where do you suggest we locate the TBG camp in Sept.? John Wilson
-
TG if'n a few fella's from virginia were to get an invite what stuff would we need to bring? do you sleep in tents, campers or under the stars? i just took a peek at my schedule and the last 2 weeks of september are wide open and this hunt sounds sweet.
-
Rob, most sleep in tents. A couple of campers shells on trucks. Then there is Terry's "Taj- ma- hut"! I guess sleep in whatever you have. We had some nasty weather and some high wind one night, so keep that in mind.
If you can make it, the more the merrier!
This photo is Terry and his Taj-ma-hut (Tent-ma-hal?), at lunchtime. It was almost "flashlight dark" shortly after this photo. Dang clouds.

Yep, anyone is invited....
Yeah.....I heard we all got a heavy frost...but the magic question now is......where was the 'bloom line' at the time of said frost?
If the top haddn't bloomed, there will be more acorns up there than low.....we got plenty of time to find out, just curious.
-
HOW high are these mountains?
-
PaleFace,
Yep....its camping.....your choice of shelter or not.....best if you had something to keep the bugs off of ya at night.
-
they had snow this weekend, went up couple weeks ago seen couple birds and a rattler
-
damn almost 40000 acres i guess you could get lost.terry your stories have really got me interested.what parts do you hunt east or west, north or south.or does the frost line determine it.i saw another post where you took a friend on his first hog hunt is that in cohutta?terry, sorry for all the questions but i wanna hog hunt bad.
-
Keith......that 'almost 40,000 acres' is INSIDE the Cohutta managment area...for a total of 95,000 acres.
I hunt mostly the west side......and the north.
Nah, that hunt was in south GA.
Keep in touch, and we'll get together sometime.
-
I can't make this hunt, but I would definitely like to hook up with some of you guys in Cohutta in mid-Aug if anyone is interested. Just let me know.

Again....I think the bear hunt will be the 3rd weekend in Sept........that's usually the 2nd week of Bow Season for GA.
I'll get this all figured out on 'where' camp will be. We'll have the hunt regardless of where camp is, and anyone interested is welcome to come.
If we camp at Horse Shoe Bend......we can flat out cover a lot of ground...some in the Wilderness, and some on the management area.
Gotta get Neil and Dan scouting early.....they'll figure out about the top sure enough based on what they saw last year.......I'm pretty sure they are gonna be there.

count me in, that'll be after "the rush" for folks in the archery business so should be able to get away

I'll be going back for sure!
Last year, several guys including Tim F. and Joel didn't make it because they were helping at a kids shoot. A nobel reason to miss it. But I hope those guys holding that shoot change their date this year.

Keith, where did you get your map from?

thanks for the reminder Dan, that may very well be the case this year as well. That event is always held on Nat'l Hunting and Fishing Day---if it's the same weekend i'll just have to miss the hunt again---kids come first !

Is this hunt still going to take place? Any word on a date?

Yep, Fri afternoon, Saturday, and as much time Sunday as the wives will allow, 9/14-16. Check the Traditional Bowhunters of GA Forum here on Tradgang for more info.
