Title: Hunting face masks?
Post by: Longtoke on May 08, 2016, 01:53:00 PM
I have been using an OD green bandana for a face mask and it seems to work ok, just a little bit of a pain adjusting it all the time. It also gets pretty  hot wearing it when stalking.

The net face masks look like they would be nice and coo, as well as easy to breath through but how do they sit on the face? they seem like they will need constant adjustment too.

I have also been looking at something called a hoo rag. They come in lots of good camos and colors but I wonder how hot they will be and how hard to breath through.

What works for all of you guys, has anyone used the hoo rag before?

I've been using Spandoflage masks for many years and like them.  Used the full head cover until I found the 3/4 mask and like the 3/4 much better.  I pull it just under my nose and my glasses don't fog.

I really like my buff. I think it's merino wool and its cool in the summer and warm in the fall. Fits skin tight so it doesn't affect anchor and it can be worn many different ways. Nothing not to like about it really.

I've never been able to wear a face mask when hunting.  Too hot, moves around too much etc.  I like Carbomask face paint.  I've also used a charcoal briquette with good results.

Hunter Specialties makes a leafy mask built on a mesh.  I like it, works well with glasses and this time of year with no fogging.  Trimmed a few leafs and I was good to go.

I have used various face masks and hoods with good success. The mesh masks sit well on my face, because they have a wire frame that adjusts easily. The face mask is my overall favorite, but is hot. That is not a bad thing in late season, though. I use to use face paint, but it smeared. I understand it works better now.

3x on the buff.....love it. Nice and tight so it doesn't interfere with anchor / feel. Lots of colors too.

x2 on the spandoflage headnet  fits tight to the face nice and airy on a hot day but still holds a supriseing amount of heat on a chilly day

I used wine corks this spring for turkey.  Just burned the end, cool and paint.  I also use various face nets in the past

Facemask inevitably messes with my anchor.

Carbomask for me on every hunt.  Its a breeze to clean up with a baby wipe (unscented of course!)  LOL

Buff as well when it gets a little cooler. When hot I use face paint.

Another fan of the Spandoflauge face mask. Fits tight and is surpisingly warm when it is colder out.

can't stand facemasks unless VERY cold weather hunting with a rifle.

Those spandex/fishnets drive me crazy too.

I've been using carbomask for years and have no intentions of changing.

I really like the merino first light mask. Been using it for a few years.  I sewed the corner of the eye openings to my liking. Very nice.

Quaker Boy makes a good variety of mesh face masks. I prefer the full mask with the aluminum insert that you can shape as needed. You can find them on line at QuakerBoy.com.

Bought myself a Carbomask kit off Amazon.  I've heard good things about it, going to give it a good try this Fall.

I used as Hunters Specialty Net.  It is very loose fitting and does not impede me getting my anchor.  The spandex ones pull my ears down and its hard to get to my second anchor point.

Never heard of the buff  until here. When I use one it is a lightweight balaclava by Sitka Gear. It doesn't cover my nose or eyes.

The face masks that completely cover my nose cause me to sneeze (after catching my running nose).

I dont worry about masking my face. I been getting close to deer for years now without anything on my face but perhaps my stubble whiskers. On the ground, 5 yards and they dont notice my face. Turkeys, yes I use a mask most times...Deer, I just dont need it, unless bitter cold drives me to wear something, and then its for my comfort, not for the deers eyes.

The onlyest problem with face paint (ask me how I know this) is when you are young and not so wise, and you put on a great painted face at home, then stop in at the Mister Donut for a coffee and donuts to go for the drive to the woods......

or at least bring a cam-corder to record responses.

Yesterday I tried the lighter and cork trick, that worked like a charm.

burnt cork - carry couple wipes with ya so no funny looks at the gas station.

When/IF it gets cold I will go to some sort of balaclava style full head mask - kuiu or first lite - just something keep my bald head and ears warm.

Homemade deerskin mask. I've worn them so long I feel naked without it. Does not interfere with anchor.
