Title: Goodbye Ed Schlief, you broke the mold.
Post by: joebuck on May 02, 2016, 10:42:00 AM
My most rewarding treasure from hunting with traditional equipment is the friendships i have been blessed with. Ed was at the top of my list. I met Ed on the phone to complain about a walrus hide arm gaurd he sold me in 93ish?  Next thing i knew he was in my lap in south ga hog hunting in months. Like wise he drug me through some knarly alaska raft hunts where we almost drowned me and i lost a bow several times. Ed was a gentleman and intellect. He loved bowhunting and tirelessly pursued to better his broadheads and arrows he founded in his company at Alaska Bowhunting Supply.  If you ever met Ed you noticed right off the bat how genuine he was and interested he was in you and history. My heart goes out to Garrett ,jenny and Siri today for their and our loss. Joey buchanan

Ah shoot.  Thanks JoeB I hadn't heard.  He was a very great, interesting guy. Had lunch last fall but don't think we'd talked since... he shared some great quotes from you JoeB from a flooded out float trip on the A. River.  Prayers for his family.

JOeB,

I got that call from his Sister...Ed and I had a long history as well, I got him to attend Denton Hill shoot and we had a lot of great memories. I couldn't make the one float fishing trip he wanted me to make... finances ruin fun!  :(

I knew he had the pulmonary fibrosis, but he kept it quiet...and I Learned his closing moments were of his design, with family.

I posted it on the Prayer forum.

I will that guy and his antics.. like the purple bathrobe, plywood antlers taunting a young bull moose in his yard...he was always doing something.

He lost his friend a year or so ago, now him.  Indeed TJ, way too many such posts...but each of us has no guarantees on when or how long

Dang Joey...

I appreciate the invite from you that allowed me to hunt with and get to know Ed.  I think you nailed the part about his interest in people he met.  I felt that in a huge way within minutes of meeting him.  Also getting to watch him shoot his first turkey was unforgettable on many levels.  Wish I would have done a better job staying in touch with him. Truly an endearing character....

I also took a number of critters with his arrow shafts including my biggest buck, a couple of caribou and a pile of Afican game. He really was an innovative man.

So sorry to hear of Ed's passing.  He really was something special and I will always fondly remember our time together at Klintworth turkey camp.  One of a kind, and a fascinating man to talk with.
RIP Ed.

PRAYERS OFFERED for  ED and his Family.

From time to time Ed and I would get into brodhead discussions. While we did not always agree he was always a true gentleman.

Ed was not afraid to "think outside of the box" . His innovations have contributed greatly to the archery community.

Ed will be missed!

I know that his sister Bea is monitoring his email account and reporting good wishes to his wife.  I do not know if they come here or not, but I'll send a link so they can read the fine words regarding a brother and husband.

His Son, Garrett now runs the ABS biz outa the west coast.

I had the privilege in Ed's earlier days to test some of his ideas, and was amazed at how he found such unique products from his AK, often made by the indigenous folks, to share with us... he was an incurable tinkerer and inventor of sorts.

Some of the antics he'd get into it's a wonder he made it to his 70's as he did.. but he was smart, resourceful and loved the outdoors and trad for sure.

I especially liked what Joe said about how when you hit a point of disagreement, he was always a gentleman..indeed.  RIP, ole Hoss, you are missed and will remain so!

Ed was a very active man. To believe he is gone still just numbs me. He was a college football player, teacher , paramedic, fisherman, religious trad bowhunter, devout waterfowler and incredable story teller especially about Alaska folk lore. On my hunts with him in the alaska bush, he always would tell tell the most gruesome bear eating man stories to scare the !@#$ out of me. He had a great story about encounter with Yeti in SE Alaska. Good gosh he was alot of fun.  Little known fact.   at one time ED had the Un official World Record Halibut.   Here is a newspaper clipping he sent me after it happened. If he would have bought a halibut lottery ticket, this fish would have netted him $80000.  i think this was 95ish?

Only dealings I had with the man were over the phone. Had an issue/extended delay with an order from them once and it was extended! took awhile. I didnt mind honestly no rush?

Mr. Schelief would call me once twice a week apologizing for the delays and updating me. He didnt have to and I told him that but he was honestly concerned.

Dont find that personal level of helpfulness often. It is out there but he was truly genuine in his dealings with me.

I wish him God's speed on a new journey and wish his family comfort and prayers through the loss.

J
