I'm looking forward to a wonderful adventure with a bunch of great folks. Lord willing, I'll have some up close & personal interactions with large black bears too...
This will be my second BQ! Tom puts on a great hunt. I shot my last bear on the first day which left me with plenty of time to check baits and go fishing. I'm gonna be a little more picky this time hold out for a bigger bear. I think I'll be taking my Journeyman longbow Macassar Ebony 50#@28" and some surewood Doug fir tipped with woodsman broadheads. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

This will be my first first time bear hunting too. I'm going with a reverse handle Hill Style bow of my own making (and that I made especially for this hunt) and some douglas fir arrows made by Gary Hall tipped with Magnus broadheads.
I was a little worried that some things at work were going to spoil my bear quest plans, but those have been alleviated. I can't wait!!!!
Matt might be picky this go around, but I sure won't be. As long as it's not a sow with cubs or a cub, I'll drop the string on the first one that gives me a good shot.
Each of my practice sessions these days begins and ends with some <10 yard shots. I call these my "Bear Quest shots". It's a good confidence builder.
I also can't wait to meet those of you that I haven't met before.

Although it was not on Tom's list of "to bring" items, I encourage all of you Week 2 hunters to bring a pair of ear plugs. Gary Hall's snoring is legendary!!!
Looking forward to our hunt Matt and Travis :

What's your setup John?
Oh ya John, that's a sweet setup!!!!!
I think I'm in your boat, first good shot, and the string will be dropped :archer2:

I don't think I've been on a trad gang group hunt where the snoring hasn't been EPIC! I'll be falling asleep every night with my noise cancelling headphones on and loud music.
As far as shooting goes. I'd practice those real close shots!!

How close was your shot on your bear Matt?
Having asked everyone that week. I had the longest shot at .......eleven yards. (Black Label tree stand) I think the closest one was about 4 yds by PV from the ground blind. He recorded it too, but something happened and it got recorded over.. You'll see if you get to tend to some of the baits. They are close set ups.
John as long as you dont try and sneak up on me at night you will be fine !!
You just had to tell everyone about my snoring
LOL
I will be using a Sweka bow for sure will do pictures and a better write in the morning when I can think of something smart to say on Johns behalf
CANT WAIT TO GET UP THERE!!!!
Honestly I would be more worried about John and his camera hes like a sniper with that thing.
Always managed to get me at the worst moments and snap a picture
But on a good note he makes a great bow. Shoots great smooth and quite and takes a beating
My bow limb tip draws maps in the dirt, can tell how deep the water is in a swamp and can even slide down the pine trees in Maryland when you forget a tow rope with out breaking. They are like a timex takes a liken and keeps on shooting.

And Sweka bows has the best looking spokesman for the bows he looks like a Ginger Brad Pitt with a beard, just look at that sexy dude in the middle
4 - 11 yards......... :scared:
I'm guna need to work on my breathing skills more then my shooting skills :help: that's close!
What was the average height of the stands?
Gary - You keep beating up the bows I make for you and I'm gonna quit making them for you!!
The stands are pretty low too. 7 feet maybe. Tom will chyme in here soon I bet.
4 - 11 yards, 7 feet off the ground...That sounds like a slam dunk shot opportunity, but then I start realizing that I have never been that close to a bear before.
Sure, I've been practicing that close, but is there really anything you can do to prepare yourself for a bruin encounter that close? How do you keep calm enough so that you don't pinch the nock off your string and dry fire your bow?

That's what I'm saying!!!
OHHHHH I cant wait :archer:
Almost every stand I hunted in the four times I went I could put my bow on the platform of the stand I am only 5"8".When I hunted Barry Wensel'S stand it was about 15'/18' and maybe a couple of others I had to climb up to reach the platform.Have fun guys really wish I had jumped in this year but decided a little late. One hint bring 2-thermacells.Start one when you get in and save the other for about an hour or hour and a half later lite it b/c the first will die out just when the bears are active.Kip

I just bought a second one because it was suggested but thanks for the strategy.....
So your using two pads a night and two canisters every other day?
I want to make sure I bring enough refills..... :readit:
I hung this camera at the Deli on the tree that had the stand in it. I'm 6' and the stand was head high. Had this big guy coming in but nobody ever laid eyes on him for the two weeks, that's a five gallon pail to his right and he's hunkered down in front of a 55 gallon blue plastic barrel. About a 15 foot shot, 6 foot up. That's close!

June 17 can't get here soon enough!
Hi Everyone,
My name is Tim Nuss, I live in East Central Illinois. Just outside of a very small farming community of Roberts. I am a flat lander.
This will be my first bear hunt. I will be driving up from Illinois.
My setup will be my Black Widow MAIII 64"/ 62# at 31". My arrows are Gold-Tip Traditional 75-90, with my all time favorites Ace 160 Standards with 100 grain insert.
I am really looking forward to this adventure, I am also looking forward to meeting each and everyone of you. I have lots to learn and ready to go.
Tim Bowdoc will fill you in with all you need to know.Kip
You guys are going to have a great time......It's a real eye opener to have a bear less than 10 yards when your feet are only 6 foot off the ground. Just be calm and take your time....my bear came in 3 times before I even took the bow off the hook. It was exciting.......

I almost jumped on this last year and now I wish I would have, this sounds like it will be a blast. Is Fred Eichler going this week or will he be there week 1?

I believe he will be there the first week with one of his boys.
Hey guys, I always seem to miss these kinds of things until they are underway. Anywhere where I can see some information about where this hunt is, when, and how to get involved next time?
Thanks, and good hunting!
Good luck John. Loving the green reverse handle!

Got a Bowdoc story for ya. Early one morning I was sitting on the porch looking at the lake. Bowdoc was sleeping in a tent about 75 yards away. When he came out he immediately sat down on the ground and started scooting on his butt by pulling himself along with his heels. When he finally reached the porch, I was in stiches! I had to ask "what in the world are you doing"? Surprised to see me, he looked embarassed and just said two words...."Pine pitch"! :)
Bill, I'm thinking more like parasites or maybe too much course black pepper on his steak the night before. I ain't buying the pine pitch line.
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: Bowdoc is one of a kind....thank God!!
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: Bowdoc is one of a kind....thank God!!
Flying into CT and hitching a ride to camp with Gary Hall...Thanks Gary!
This is gonna be good! Won't be long......
We probably won't get to see any bears week two because Gary will probably scare them all away as he trips and falls trying to run and get his camera.......
Paul, Shhhhhhhh......
That was going to be a story for camp - "The time Gary saw his first bear."

I can hardly Stand it :knothead:
Pulling all the loose ends together this evening and then we will be on the road tomorrow after work
Looking forward to a week with some fellow TGers :campfire:
WHATEVER !!!! I TOOK THAT FALL LIKE A MAN
Good luck to you all!
John, that reverse handle looks awsome brother! Make sure when you show up to The Shade Mt. Shoot you bring it so i can shoot it.
I'll be on the road mid-morning tomorrow and heading to Connecticut. Then on to Quebec on Friday. I can't believe it's finally here!
Yewbender - I'll definitely bring that bow to Shade Mt. Hopefully the leather grip will be stained with bear blood when you grab it for some shots.
Best of luck to all week #2 hunters  .......Have fun!! :campfire:
