Title: Texas vs MA
Post by: styksnstryngs on April 26, 2016, 05:54:00 PM
Hey all, My dad just got a job opportunity to move to Texas and get a job as a prof for more money. However, I just wanted to know about archery near Corpus Christi. Here in MA, we know a landowner who does lots of archery himself, and a friend who also owns stumping grounds. We would also leave behind a lot of friends, as well as a great archery program and temperate forests. Are there any advantages to moving to Texas (Gulf area) archery-wise? Thanks.
(I noticed this coincided with the Texas bowhunting thread--I don't hunt yet, but the knowledge that there are trad archers is comforting.)

Sounds like you have a good private deal.
For me here in Mass, I hunt mostly public land. Awful lot of hunters crammed into small areas around here. I've taken some nice deer, but not much against unpressured deer which I'd rather pursue. Setting up on escape routes gets old.

I'll go to Texas if you don't want to.

I would think you have some hog hunting also in that area of Texas?

I was going to attempt to hide my biased, but forget it, it's impossible!
I don't know why anyone would not want to live in Texas ??
In Corpus Christi you'll be within an hour of the best deer, hog, and javelina hunting in the country(imho)
But as far as public land, Texas has very very little, but  I have no idea about the Corpus Christi area .

Did I mention it's consistently one of the hottest economies in the country ?

To me it would be hard not to go. No state income tax In Texas, and I think they have the largest whitetail population in the US. Hogs, deer, havalina, and many other opportunities for flinging arrows. Headed to Texas in May for a hog hunt, and the amazing thing is you have everything from hills, pines, oaks, and desert in the same state.

Blessed One, yes, you have everything in the same state, but they are separated by a lot of miles.
I have driven 60 miles (one way) for lunch before. You can go 75 miles between houses.
BUT love this state.  Like they say, Texas is a state of mind.
Even though over 90% of the land is private, the remaining percent makes up a lot of acres.
Oh yeah, and the salt water fishing....
Property taxes are high in some places, which kind of makes up for the lack if income taxes.
