My 60 " AMO recurve bow string just broke. I have no replacement for it, I only have a larger string which fits my 62" AMO recurve. My question is if I can twistthat string to make it fit my 60 bow or would it cause some damage to my bow or string?
Thanks in advance
It will take a lot of twists to take up 2" to fit your 60" bow. Probably won't hurt your bow but performance will suffer. I would just order another string for it or better yet learn to make your own string. There are lots of video's on the net that shows how to do it. I found the plans on Trad Gang to make a string jig and after watching a few videos and some practice I learned to make my own in a short while. I am sure the real pro's will chime in later with more advice.
If you have to twist it up 2", that's too much. Going to look awful, plus wear prematurely.
Shouldn't damage the bow, but I do know of one bowyer who tried to blame the string (that he supplied with the bow) for a twisted limb...so if your bow is under warranty, I wouldn't even try it.
Your string will look like barbed wire twisting that much! Plenty of sponsors here sell them or your local archery shop will have one.
When you do order a string, go ahead and order 2. It will cost twice as much, but you'll have twice as many. Plus you'll save the shipping on the second one should you buy it later.
I always encourage my customers to buy 2. There is no substitute for preparation.
I always think, what if i'm a mile in the woods and accidentally bump my string on a broadhead or something? I'll either have a long walk out with a useless bow, or i'll have a spare string and string it up.
FYI, when you buy a new string(or make) get two. Shoot one in then replace it with the other and save the first for a spare.
Thanks all. It is a relatively new bow so That is why my extra string is for my other bow. I will buy two definitely. Which string would you all recommend for a Bob Lee Ultimate recurve?

Check in to Brownell Fury for the material. I have had wonderful results with it. It does not fuzz up as bad as some other materials, very low stretch, high performance, and very quiet!
Fjasso,
I am slightly biased towards HCBstrings.com. :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
BCY-X for me. The most stable and quiet material I've used. SK90 Dyneema with 17% Vectran. If you prefer a 100% Dyneema material, 8190.
Yes Daniel,
My other bow strings are hcb strings. Which type (model)would you recommend?
FJ
I'm with Chad. I personally like BCY X. It is what i use on all my bows and don't have any complaints! I have shot them in everything from below freezing to over 100 and have not noticed any stretch. Not saying they didn't, but saying if they did, I did not notice.
I purchased a bow from a guy a couple of years ago. I won't tell the brand (but its one of the top 2 or 3 recurves out there).
The bow itself was a 10 out of 10. When I looked at the string it was twisted a lot! I mean way more than any string I've seen before.
Also noticed that the lower limb was twisted in the direction the string would have pulled it.
I can't definitely say the string did it, but I'm almost positive it did.
I worked with it a few times and its straight now. Plus, it has an appropriate length string.
I'd just purchase another one. No reason to risk it.
I always replace the string on every used bow I buy.
