:smileystooges:
This here is another one of my make do with "Whatcha got" osage. Some time back I had given Ray from Syracuse an osage stave. He started working on it but it just wasn't his cup of tea.So he traded it back to me for some vine maple of which he made 2 fine bows. I got started on working the osage stave myself a few months back.It had a few issues. There were quite a few wind or drying checks that went almost entirely through to the back. I was able to get a decent 60 1/2" 38#@28" snakey bow out of it.
I couldn't make up my mind as to whether I should finish it, sinew it, rawhide or silk back it. So I Penobscotted it. LOL.
The 60 1/2"ntn main bow has some natural deflex. The lower limb is pretty much straight. The upper limb is snakey with humps, bumps and twists. The back bow is 48"ntn and has 5" of heat induced reflex.
Both are relatively free of pins and knots.
Currently the bow is drawing 64#@28".
Pics are not current but will post more later.

Goog to see your still after it buddy. I hadn't seen you around much and was starting to get worried about ya. I can't wait to see how this one turns out!
Thanks buddy.I'm still here. Mostly just staying in the background. My bow making had slowed to a snails pace after that yew T/D blew. Being out of work for my back,I got real bored. That got me to start makin shavins again. :bigsmyl:
Very cool Linc :) Looking forward to seeing it fnished.
Thanks Rob.

Wish granted! :D :D :D
Gotta see you drawing this!
Rob, I isn't really finished.I still have to shave some weight off the back bow, tweek the tillering some, sand it and seal it. But I am nearer than further. ;) :goldtooth:
Joseph, Will do. At least once I get the poundage down to something a bit more manageable.LOL. I haven't been able to draw that poundage in 3 or 4 yrs. :(
I forgot to mention, the current brace height is 4 3/4".It was originally 6" before stringing up the back bow.Just goes to show how much extra stress that small bow is applying.
Cool bow. I have seen that design around but didnt know what it was called...Hope it works out for ya. Im still chipping a little here and there, in between diaper changes and all.
Keep us posted on this....take care.
Thanks Jamie, I had this type of bow at the bunny hunt but you probably didn't notice it.
Ah yes, the master craftsman at his finest. Linc old friend you could make a bow from just about any old dern thing. Good to see ya back on the board. Have ya been hunting out back yet?
Thanks John.Stillhunted down back Monday morning for a few hours. That's been it.Didn't see nuttin,no deer and no squirrels.
Been working on the beast and tamed it a little.Raised the brace to 5 1/8" and lowered the poundage to 61#@28". I'm still some what concerned about a few of the drying checks in the snakey area. I think I had better get that area wrapped with art. sinew and superglue.Backing with rawhide or silk maybe a good idea also.
Linc, this is your best "hairbrained idea" yet, and I like it. Rawhide would help, along with the wraps. They will be good protection for your knoggin. :bigsmyl:
talk about a serious tiller'N job :scared:
i am with the gang on this one, make sure you video yourself shooting it....
COOL stuff for sure...
Thanks Dano,I think rawhide and art.sinew are going to be my choices on this baby.
Rob,I don't have any way to video.Sorry.
Looking good Linc.
Thanks Ray.
Yesterday afternoon I backed the main bow with rawhide.I'll give it lots of time to dry before stringing it again. In the meantime I'll try to find time to trim the rawhide and get the glue cleaned up.
Moving along at a snails pace.Trimmed the rawhide and cleaned up the glue.I have also wrapped the limb with artificial sinew and soaked with superglue.Pics to follow shortly.

I haven't forgtotten about you all.
Saturday I strung the bow with a 6" brace height and excercised it a little and let it sit strung for 6 hrs or so.It held some string follow for a while and I haven't been able to get back to it since. So I don't know if it fully recovered or not.
Wow Linc that's interesting and those are some serious back checks. Hope it holds together for you.
Having thrown my back out twice in recent rears aI have real sympathy for anyone with back troubles. Hope you get to feeling better.
Interesting bow, how are the two parts held together?
Linc, that is really a neat looking bow. It's all twisted and stuff! I hope you are feeling better. Jawge
Thanks Mickey,Mike and Jawge. So far it has held up at 64#@28" with a 4 3/4" brace for about a dozen draws.I should probably wrap some more of the snake. There is one check mighty close to the edge, but I had left that area stiff.
Mike, The two bows are glued together with Tite Bond II.I also put 2 wire nails to hold it in position before clamping. I will also be wrapping the handle area with artificial sinew and saturating with superglue.
Mickey and Jawge, I've been doing pretty good the past few weeks.Yesterday and today weren't so good.Thank you both for your concern.
Jawge, I don't think I have any premo osage.LOL. It all has twists and turns.
I decided to go for broke. I strung up the bow and put it on the tree. I excercised it quite a bit ever increasing the draw length. 5 7/8" brace 53#@26" 57#@27" and finally 61#@28". I drew to 28" about a dozen times and held for about 30 seconds each time. I shot a half dozen arrows, a bit shockie but tolerable. I still have to add a palm swell to the handle.
After unstringing it had 1 1/2" of string follow. It had 1 1/4" of natural deflex to begin with, so it only gained 1/4" of follow. After letting it rest for an hour I rechecked. It is back to the original 1 1/4".
Nice job Linc, for a "hairbrained idea" :bigsmyl:
Thanks Dano. I've been pretty lucky with my hairbrained ideas working out.I hope the luck continues.
Sorry about the long hiatis (sp?) but I finally finished up this bow today. 60" ntn 50#@25".I named it Split Personality.
