Title: How do you hunt rabbit
Post by: Matt Fowler on January 25, 2007, 08:49:00 AM
How do you guys hunt rabbits without a dog? Do you try a spot and stalk kind of thing? Can't imagine tryin' to hit one on the run:) No snow for tracking here yet either. Should I be out there at the crack of dawn? Thanks in advance.

Dawn and dusk would be my go to plan if I was on my own.

I get out early just because I like to get out early. I see bunnies all day if the weather is nice. A great time to go after rabbits is when ever you can get away.

I just put my face in the wind and move my eyes more then I move my feet. Most rabbits will try and let you walk by them, but if you stop and look alot it will make them jump. From what I have seen cotton tails will run alittle and then stop to look around, great chance to take a shoot. I havent seen this as much with snoeshoes but they also do it from time to time.

I have only hunted rabbits in the snow so most of the time I just drive on logging roads tell I find some good tracks, then I get out and walk.

Good luck

Cottontails are urbanites around here, out in the woods the snowshoe hare is king.  We got a good light fluffy tracking snow yesterday, so I'm gonna go poke around this afternoon.  Hopefully I'll have a pic or two this evening.

I slowly spot and stalk,
or I toss a carrot or cabbage and celary,
one time I used hot cheetos,
and i just sat there,
evry half an hour all the way to 2 hours I always had a rabbit come up to the bait  and sniff it for a while, giving me time to make a shot
it does take time and patience.

p.s
dont try the hot cheetos!!!
it just a waist of a good snack!!!

What kind of rabbits are you hunting? Hares or cottontails?

For cottontails, I walk very slowly, and carefully search the brush with my eyes. Stop often. If any are near by, they get nervous when you stop, and they may take off. If they aren't too skittish, they'll go only a short ways and try to put some brush between you. If I'm too far away, or if brush is in the way, I try to pinpoint where the bunny is, then I walk away at an angle, and make a circle to get around the brush. Makes him think you're leaving.

Jackrabbits here tend to flush either long before you get in range, or at 60mph from right under your feet. Often they will stop and stand up and look back. But they only hold still for a few seconds, and they're often 30-50 yards by then, sometimes more depending on how spooky they are. If  you're that good, it would be an excellent shot opportunity.

Buck-tamer, what part of Nevada are you from?

You hunt unique rabbits the way Chuck already mentioned (u'nick up on 'em) but how do you hunt tame rabbits???
...... the tame way, of course.

A Bulgarian friend of mine told me that back home they used to put some ground black pepper on a rock. The rabbits would get curious and come to sniff the rock. The pepper would make them sneaze so violently, they would knock their chin against the rock and succumb to the concussion.    :smileystooges:   Never trust a Bularian telling hunting stories!!!

Ya hunt rabbits with 50 guys bulling thru brush and put another 15 guys out in front and shoot them as they run by. Ya can spot and stalk or bust brush. It is tought o shoot bunnies where we hunt by spot and stalk as ya may see them but 9 out of 10 times it is too thick to shoot. We jump piles of fresh brush and shoot on the run or when  and if they stop. If ya are not too far away from Selkirk NY ya can come to my bunny hunt and we will show ya how it is done. shawn

I like to sneak around and look for them sitting. But I'm ready to try it Shawn Leonard style.
