Title: Scored a Bear TD. Now I'm hooked.
Post by: Bud B. on March 18, 2016, 06:40:00 AM
I have always wanted a Bear Takedown. Preferably a Grayling model, but getting a second mortgage is not in my plans, so, I have been looking for an affordable one for a while. I found one locally, but it was RH. I pondered on it and thought I'd give it a try anyway since I have been shooting some of those wrong handed bows. The good thing is it had Grayling limbs with it.

I took it home and wiped it down. I strung it and grabbed a 45lb spined wood arrow. After shooting it just a few shots at short range I have decided I need to find a lefty as well. Man what a quiet recurve. Fred Bear did us all a favor with this TD system. I can see why the factory can get backlogged in production of this bow. This handle is a mid 90s Gainesville version. Although not mint, it sure is nice and the overall weight of the bow contributes nicely to its performance.

Thank you, Mr. Bear.

I bought a brand new b mag in 1984 still in the box. Had the same limb specs as yours!

Traded em to Todd Smith, still regret it!

Love them Fascor limbs, too!

Enjoy Bud

I like that one have a few myself and thats what I shoot the most! Guy can get a little crazy with collecting them if he doesn't watch himself.

I only have three Bears. I picked up two Black Bear bows at low poundage I got cheaply. I won a Royal Safari at a TBOF event. One Black Bear is 30# and the other is 35#. The longbow is 40#. Maybe in a few years the grandson might like them. Both recurves are Grayling models. So far, I haven't gotten hooked on Bear bows, but I must admit they do interest me a whole lot, even though I am a dire hard ASL guy.

I like all bows, for the most part, Sam. But the vintage bows, particularly the Bears, have struck a chord with me since my youth. The problem with Grayling TDs is many folks like'em and collect'em. The Graylings are out of my reach. The Gainesville bow handle was affordable and is quite nicely built. I have seven ASLs. The rest are a variety with Bear recurves making the bulk of the collection. I just had no idea how much I would like the Bear TD.

They are great shooter accurate and quite, if you can upgrade with some after market limbs you'll love it even more.

That's a real nice one! I've wanted one for a couple years now. Hope I can find a good deal on one. I think everyone who likes Bear bows ought to have a take-down.

Hey Bud, Your going to have a lot of fun with it.
I got a pretty good deal and picked up  a newer redstripe B handle in January.  I'm liking it a lot. It is a great all around bow design and balances various attributes to shoot really consistently.

Bud, I have been a longbow shooter for a long time (ASL style bows) but Bear has made me more of a recurve shooter than I have been in years. I do understand your fondness for the Bear TD--best TD system ever devised in my opinion.

What do these risers typically go for in price?  I'd love to find an A Mag. even if its in rough shape.

Well Bud" I will say you are now hooked, I got my hands on my first greenstripe T/D and have not looked back, with any luck this year I will buy a new two tone riser. I had and sold to my dismay a mag A handle and another greenstripe T/D. I will not sell any more only add to my collection.I have said it before I am a Big BEAR fan.

No offense Bud, but from what I know about your collection you were "hooked" way before the Bear, lol!  Are you coming to any of Forsyth's shoots?  I'm still trying to get down to one of Barefoot's.

Is Bear planning on building any machined aluminum risers in the future?

It is a sickness. Still searching for the LH wood A or B handle. I got that RH off craigslist

I don't know about Forsyth. Since GPAA shut down it's hard to keep up with all the local shoots with the wheelie guys. Shoot me a PM next time you're hitting Forsyth.
