Title: Turkey time!
Post by: TradBrewSC on March 10, 2016, 08:57:00 PM
So this is the first year I'm going to go trad only on the thunder chickens and put down the 20ga. I have finally got a litt me time as the wife is away and am working on getting everything rigged up.

I stripped some arrows and put more "subtle" fletching on, added on one of Chads fine string trackers, and now trying to figure out what broadhead to roll with. I want to hear your thoughts!

Let's make this a turkey thread! Thanks guys.

Man I am soooo excited!!!  It's hard to beat hearing a turkey gobble rattle the woods.  That's an awesome setup.  Any of those heads will work.  I'm partial to interceptors myself, but have no experience with the others.  Good luck!

My turkey rig is almost complete. I just need to decide on broadheads.

Shot birds with simmons and shot through 2 birds with the single bevel cutthroat heads they all die when you hit em right like anything but my personal preference for a great bloodtrail and getting the bird down quick it's simmons just my .02 cents

Any one of those broadheads you have will work fine. I will not turkey hunt without my string tracker. It really helps in recovery if the bird gets out of sight.

On another note; what size aluminum do you use to foot those FMJ's?

I will be chasing those gobblers with only my bow this year also. Will be using the Interceptors. I believe the ruffed grouse gets the "thunder chicken" moniker.

Bisch, those are 400 FMJ's and I believe those were 1913's.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

I really do love that Stickflinger. Brian makes one heck of a bow.

I think I am going to rig up the simmmons safari's. I have been shooting the Abowyers for a while for whitetails... Time for a change!

I'm planning to do the same, trad only this year!! Just bought new bow it's zipper from Bill Dunn and now am trying to decide which arrows to try to tune it with. Going to my cabin in ky this weekend to do a little scouting for youth season!! Happy hunting!!

What draw weight are you using? I am recovering from shoulder surgery, so if I get to hunt at all, it will be with 40# draw max. I have always hunted with considerably heavier bows. I generally use Zwicky 2 blade heads for deer and have never shot at a turkey. I am trying to go to school on these turkey threads, so recommendations and details of hunting rigs are greatly appreciated. Especially the broadheads used. This will be my 20th year to hunt trad only, but it has almost been all deer hunting.

Turkey hunting is my Longbow favorite. 2018's .145 Eskimo heads,60" Centaur 51@28. Spring is my favored season anyway. Buds are blooming,Turkeys gobbling,Bass are biting,Sun is shining. Love it.   rat'

I just got a 40# bow for hunting out of blinds.  I was not getting very much penetration on my riehnhart target and was a little worried.  Went over to my buddy's house and shot one of his farm birds that he was planning on butchering any way.  Used a 3 blade broad head, and got great penetration.  I am not worried about that any more.

My turkey set up is Blackhawk Carbonvapors (3000) with Magnus 2 blades.  (125 gr). Shot out of a Black Widow Pl III 64" 48# @ 28".  Bring on the thunder chickens!

I think those 3 blade heads you have there will do the job nicely.  For me I have to go with my 2 blade heads as that is what I get the sharpest.  Provides me with more confidence I guess.

Beautiful bow too.  Keep us posted.

Thanks guys!

I also have trouble getting 3 blades as sharp as I want and actually working on it now! I can get two blades crazy sharp but just can't get these 3 blades where I want them...

I like the three blade heads myself, you don't need a lot of bow weight, just need to shoot it really good. Not much of a kill area on a turkey.
Three blade heads are easy to sharpen, just a few things different than two blade heads. Start with a 14" mill bastard file, lay it on a flat surface and stroke head down the length of the file, turn after each stroke, put some oressure on it, it will cut a new bevel on the head. After you get this bevel you can use a flat stone to finish, I use a double sided diamond stone,
Course and fine and finish on a leather strop. Very important to rotate head after each stroke all the way through the sharpening process.

Thanks Mr. Mackey! I'm going to try the Simmons first go round, but will certainly try the mill file. That what I used back in the day with snuffers.

Killed my first two trad birds last year, hopefully i can stumble on the same luck this year. I'll probably stick with my normal set up, (#42 Omega Imperial) only thing different will be Woodsmans up front instead of Zwickey Deltas.

Good luck to all of you guys!

April 9th!!

I have never taken a turkey, but it is becoming a hunting obsession!   :)

I'm looking forward to it more than deer or elk.

This year I'm going to add another hen and a Jake deke along with some kind of gobble call.

Any recommendations for a shaker gobble call?
Title: Re: Turkey time!
Post by: R. W. Mackey on March 13, 2016, 10:06:00 PM
Monterey, about the decoys, don't just add two more, you only need two a Jake and hen, but they need to be the best
You can afford. I use the DSD brand, they are the most anatomically correct made, with unreal paint jobs. Since Avian
X updated their decoys last year, I would use them, good paint
And the right size now.
You actually only need to use a Jake, but since I use a hen call I put out a hen also. The Gobblers just cannot tolerate a
Jake and 99.9% of the time they come in and never look at the hen, they just murder the Jake over and over.
Quaker Boy makes a good shaker gobble call. I only use it early in the season when the birds are establishing their territory. Works great at times but be careful with it don't try to sound like the baddest gobbler in the woods. Try to sound like a Jake trying to gobble.

I use Avian x. Jake and hen.

However I don't use a gobble call, but would agree if u are going to use one make it sound like a Jake.

Forgot to mention, don't use the gobble call on public land especially during the gun season. You can call up all kind of idiots.
I use it during archery season in Kansas or Nebraska or on private land only. Don't take a chance, it's not worth it.
