Title: Tell me more about your, or show me your, wood arrows!
Post by: longbow fanatic 1 on March 04, 2016, 06:32:00 PM
I'm interested to see who's shooting wood arrows, and what do your wood arrows look like? What's your favorite shaft? Douglas Fur, Elm, cedar or other shafts like maple, ash or hickory? Pictures are always great!

These are cedar, a friend of mine made them for me to match my bow.  Really love them.

Actually, I broke one on a shoot at the beginning of February.  The crack everyone heard was actually the sound of my heart breaking.  It is true though that they smell nice.  I will save this set for my backyard shooting and use my aluminums for 3D shooting from now on.

BTW, were you at the Grayling shoot last year?

Dougfir made by my buddy Ron French been shooting his arrows for ten years now and yet to ever have to touch one or straiten it. I won't shoot anything else out of my longbows!

75/80# Surewood. Personal arrows of Snag.  He sold me a half dozen when I was in need. I also have a set of 70/75, but these are special. Real turkey feathers and each arrow has its actual spine written on them. I had 190 Grizzley single bevel on them.

My current arrows: 60/65# 11/32" Surewood Douglas Fir at 29" BOP. Ebony stained foreshaft and whitewashed crown. Also, my first try at cresting. Finish is Parks Wood Floor Finish, that the shaft was dipped in. Feathers are left wing Trueflights cut on my high profile banana chopper to 5.5".

I followed Mike Vines "recipe" and tutorial found here:   Mike Vines wood arrow  "recipe" (http://www.probowsociety.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2775)

Here's some I made last year and am currently using.

Douglas Fir (surewood shafts), 11/32" 50-55s 29" length, traditional barred yellow/black feathers, English Walnut Stain and polyurethane finish, with white crown and marble finish, hand crested (amateurishly).

I love watching them fly, almost too pretty to hunt with. Perfect spine with 100 grain points out of my Redstag. Total weight 560 grains.

Love looking at pretty arrows like the next guy. I wonder though, just how gorgeous the wood arrows of the early indigenous peoples were...

I like mine simple and plain.

Latest batch. 60-65# German Spruce, 30" with Merriam's cock feather from a bird my buddy killed at my camp in CO. The one with 3 naturals is going to him in OH for a cool display he's making from a matched set of mule deer antlers we each found a side to.

Looking at photos like these is one of the reasons that I have entered the world of building my own arrows.  I just don't know if I could shoot 'art' into a hay bale, especially with my abilities - but I don't think that will be my particular problem for a while!  My wife now cringes when I log on - more ideas to spend the greenbacks on!

I don't know how to download photos to this site from a home computer but my favorite woodies have simple cresting and are of a single bright cap and fletch color that catches the eye (white, yellow, pink, orange, etc.).  I like to be able to see them fly.

I had a guy make me a half-dozen custom Port Orford Cedar arrows. He did such a gorgeous job (if you like purple....obviously, I do!) that I had him do another full dozen of the same scheme. They have held up quite well, and have managed to stay straight.

Professional cresting, no shortcuts and very reasonably priced for woodies! In fact, it cost less to have these made than the basic materials for a dozen from 3Rivers.

This is my stumpin' buddy and a couple of my Doug Fur arrows .
They are stained with cherry blossom and blotches of mahogany with wipe on poly .
With the pink fletching , they are very easy to find if I practice shooting a warning shot .

Looks like you plumb missed the dog, Graps.
Would be sort of hard to miss that arrow in a bunch of green now that you mention it.

You guys are killing me - I feel almost ashamed for going out with my three yellow feathers slapped on a woodgrain GT.......  Man I wish I could shoot wood arrows well and had the time to put together these kind of "works of art"  Outstanding.

Maybe I need to contact one of our arrow smiths to work me up some doug fir with orange - I really like orange - any pics?

My arrows don't look as good as these. Mostly, they are rather plain jane, but my last dozen actually look pretty good. They also shoot well. Maybe I will eventually make some worthy of photographs.

Thanks Capt'n

Like most, I tried some home made jigs but finally spent the money on a Spinrite...they are great!

There is no substitute for a good cresting machine for good clean lines and a dipped final coat to show off your work.

I've seen some darn nice cresting jobs done with Testor's model paint.

Just good ol' Testors enamel. Mostly oil base but some Acrylic if there is a color I cant find in OB. The metalics need to be water based because an oil based finish will make them run for some reason no matter how long they dry. The crown is just spray can rustoleum. The BEST finish is Daly's Profin poly if you can get it, it don't get target burn. I've shot 3D all summer and the arrows look like new. Otherwise its Minwax OB poly thinned 25% with mineral spirits.

Its a lot of fun building wood arrows, just don't get in a hurry. It can take most of a week to get them ready to fletch.

Once they are straight...

day 1 stain
day 2 dip a sealing coat
day 3 spray crown
day 4 crest
day 5 dip finish coat
day 6 dip final coat

Diggin' those arrows WESTBROOK! I really like the Wolverine scheme posted as well, made an ex bro-in-law a similar set way back with blue stained shafts.

Nice work guys! I'd love to have a Spinrite, I'm still using an ancient Bohning I got in a kit when I first got into rolling my own.

Lions (no jokes!) colors for my late brother:

These were with some water-based cresting paints, made kind of a cool fade pattern that matched the stained portion:

So, Eric...earlier you said you had gone through a bunch of home-made arrow cresting machines. Care to elaborate, possibly on a different thread? I would love to drop the dime on a new Spinrite or Bohning cresting machine, but geez...you could buy quite a few arrows for that sort of dough. I wouldn't mind starting small if you or someone else could show us how to build one cheap just to get my feet wet; that is, unless building one would cost 50%+ of buying a professional grade one. In that case, might be best to just bite the bullet.
Thoughts, anyone?

Thanks guys! I've seen some pretty nifty home-made set ups using a drill strapped on its side with a "V" block made from scrap wood for a roller/rest along the shaft. One of those "AHA!" moments long after I'd spent money on the dedicated crester, of course...
Title: Re: Tell me more about your, or show me your, wood arrows!
Post by: WESTBROOK on June 19, 2016, 04:17:00 PM
Yup, not too complicated,  a drill motor, one of those straight electric (or cordless) screw drivers, the popular one was an old sewing machine motor cause of the pedal speed control.

A cradle for the arrow to rest in and a coupler from the motor to the arrow, usually a piece of rubber hose or tubing.

Without a doubt, the best arrows I have ever had:

Got these form Rob D. on a St. Jude's  around 2011 or 2012.  They had a weighted front end and the finish was impeccable.  That said, the mojo and critters I took with the dozen arrows (The three remaining are my go to arrows this fall in Alaska moose) still boggles my mind; Every one of them have accounted for at least one dead critter, several of them two or more.  When the auction ended I questioned my sanity and wondered how anybody would ever pay that much for a dozen arrows.  In retrospect, it was the bargain of a lifetime, today I would spend twice that bid cost for another dozen of Rob D's. custom arrows.
