Well I was lucky and drew a Limited Entry Elk tag for Unit 38 in the Bighorns of WY. Really excited for this trip. Planning on a DIY solo hunt. My plan is to retire for the second time and in AUG and head west. Plan to hunt till I kill of bull or run out of energy.
If anyone has hunted that Unit and have info to pass on I'd appreciate it.
Two questions, are you in shape? Have you ever worked hard at altitude? If you can find a place to climb stairs wearing a pack, your body will thank you and you will enjoy the trip 10 fold!
That sounds awesome!
That's my dream for when I retire!
Awesome!
Good luck,
Bisch
Nice! Keep us filled in. I don't know enough about elk or solo western hunting to do that but I sure would like to. I have two Elk pts for an area of the Bighorns and plan to use an outfitter I know well. I thinks it's area 45 or 43. I was in the Bighorns mts last summer in the last week of july and needed a down vest on inside my sleeping bag in a tent at night. I'll be in the NE corner of WY is september deer hunting this year.
It is pretty hard to leave that state and come back east.
38 is a great area! beautiful country and lots of elk! congrats on the tag
I've hunted 38 years ago when I lived in Sheridan. My brother still lives there. I'll ask him if he has any spots he can recommend.
Ps.. I didn't draw mine :(

I'd appreciate it. I'll gladly take all the help I can get. I have been in contact with another solo hunter from IL that might camp with me and maybe team up on a few days.

I have hunted out west for elk many times since the early 1980's and killed a few elk during these hunts. I'm pretty much a where of what I am in for. Hunted in 2012 for 15 days solo and was fortunate to kill a bull with my wheel bow that scored in the 370's. I am really looking forward to just spending some time in The Bighorns. I have never been there but everything I see is just spectacular. I understand the fly fishing can also be good so that's a plus.
By the way the building I work in has 13 floors that I make a point to climb 3 times a day. Not that it will help when I hit elevation. I find it takes me a good 3 days to aclimate.

Congrats Z!!!! Heck of a retirement gift....be looking forward to the pixs and storys!!!!
You will love it. Good luck. Two weeks out start taking chlorophyll supplements. It will help with the altitude transition!!
Thanks for the tip I'll keep that in mind.

That would be great. I'm heading to Ft Stewart, GA for a pig hunt in the morning. I will send a PM with some questions when I get back.
Good luck in the Bighorns.
I struck out applying for a premium unit nearby but at least I got another preference point and second choice cow tag, so I get to bowhunt the Cowboy State this fall. Can't wait!
