FOR FUN, I would like to know what everyone is shooting. Pictures are great, words are also great! I would love to hear what bow you're shooting, as well as any details about your arrows, draw length, tip weight, etc.
I am hoping this could turn into a resource for guys with new bows that are wondering ABOUT what arrow they should start with.
Thank you,
Daniel

Lately I have been shooting a Black Bear Warf with old Hoyt C+ limbs probably pulling 43ish@29. With the springy set just out of true center shot it has been liking full length Goldtip 15/35 and standard inserts with 175gr points.
-
55lb Cari-bow Slynx (28.5 draw)
Beeman Center shots 400's 29.75", 75 grain insert, 175 points
I just started playing w/3 under again and may stay with it.
-
Bear Grizzly 40# , 29" draw puts it at about 42#. Shooting full length GT blems(30"), standard inserts, 150 Grain point, with 1" of footing. Shoots bullet holes.

what spine GT blems?
-
Hummingbird Kingfisher Longbow, 59# @30" (I draw 28.75")-- don't know why it's listed at 30", I got it used. Calf hair side plate, velcro rest. 14 strand D97 flemish twist string with llama wool silencers (trimmed to the size of quarterss). Shooting 3 Rivers Traditional Only 400s, cut to 31", standard inserts, 140 grain points. Three 4" shield-cut feathers and cap wrap. Bareshaft flies slightly weak, perfect with the feathers.

I'm going to try to take a turkey this spring with this setup. I always have access to hogs to,but they are not coming right now,I think there is too much pressure on them.
I have a 66" Buffalo that is 54@28. I have some 5575 Gold Tip blems that are 29" Any one of these three broadheads work good with this setup. They all have 125 grain adapters and the cutthroats weigh 315,the Instincts weigh 325,and the Big Jim's weigh 350 grains. They all shoot good. I think I will try the Big Jim's for turkey.

Depends... ;)
Started the hunting season last fall with my old standby "Reaper"... Widow SA III, 58", with 72# limbs, shooting a 31" Gold Tip 55/75 with 100 grains behind the insert and 250 grain VPA Terminator 1 1/4". Took a doe... Changed limbs to my 62# limbs, shooting 30.5" GT 35/55 with 100 gr inserts and the same 250 gr VPA... Took three squirrels and a possum...
Then pulled out the longbow... Thunderstick MOAB, 60", 71# shooting the same arrow I did with my 62# limbs with the Widow... Added a couple more squirrels to the freezer...
Then I switched to a Hill Custom I picked up last summer... 68", 85# shooting 31" Gold Tip with 100 gr behind the insert, 250 grain VPA and 8 gpi weight tube in it, and took my second doe, two more squirrels and a ground hog that made a burrough near one of my stands... First time hunting with a Hill, and it was pretty interesting... Very quiet, arrow is right at 10 GPP and I took the doe right at the end of the season (didn't get a clear opportunity at a shooter buck) at about 12 yards. Arrow went through the chest and she jumped, looked around a bit and resumed browsing for acorns again! Watched the blood pour out of both sides of the chest and she fell over about 20 yards from the stand...
I don't usually switch bows during the season, but just had a wild hair this year... And there are lots of ways to put meat in the freezer... ;)
-
Wild Horse Creek Mariah 54" recurve bow.
It is 50#@28, I draw 27". I shoot 29.5" Gold Tip Traditional arrows, 35/55, 100 Grain insert, 3 gpi weight tubes, 125 grain Woodsman broadheads.
I shoot the same arrows out of my Northern Mist Ottawa recurve, 49#@28.
-
A&H ACS 3 piece takedown, 49# at my 28" draw. 55/75 Gold Tip Trads, cut to 30", standard aluminum insert, 200 gr left bevel Werewolf broadhead, three 5" left wing feathers, arrow weighs 548 grains with 16.2 FOC, 11.1 gpp.
-
Currently shooting my widow pchx 62# @ 28". Just got in some carbon express heritage 350's a couple weeks ago. 30" length with 100 grain brass inserts and 150 grain tips. Good shooting arrows, holding up good against the stumps the last few weeks. Last season harvested my deer with beman centershot 340's with 75 grain brass insert and 150 grain heads.
-
A Thunderchild, 56", here in pig hunting configuration, with a GT trad ready for action!

Black Widow PA X. 60" and 47#@27". Gold tip arrows. 5" shield feathers. 145 grn Zwickey with a 50 grain brass insert. Flys perfectly...!

Toelke Pika 56" 45#@28", I draw 29 1/2". GT trads 3555 cut
30 1/2" 4 fletch with 109gr brass insert and 150gr broadhead.
-
Any of my Schafer recurves all are within a couple of pounds of each other, 55-60#,and 62"-56" in length. I draw 29" and shoot AD Trads at 30.5" with 100 gr brass insert and 300Xtreme heads. Sometimes my Cari-Bow Silver Fox, 58#, same arrows. Been playing with some AD Nitro Stinger orange labels also, an inch shorter in length but same weight up front.
-
I sort of hate to admit it but lately I have been gravitating towards my 50# Jaguar Elite that I bought as a back up bow, not really intending to shoot it that much. It's not a pretty bow for sure - a 3 piece metal riser recurve visually just does not look appealing at all, but it feels good - darn it! I got the Beman Centershot arrows in and have started playing with them. Cut to 30" and a 150gr head looks very promising. Need more range time before I settle on that arrow for sure.
-
Lol. I currently have 6 ILF set ups now
3 Titan II risers with BM carbon extreme limbs 50, 52 and 54 lbs all longs one has BF's the 54 pounder
Titan III with BM carbon extreme longs 48lbs
Blackmagic riser with carbon extreme limbs 49lbs
Hoyt dorado that has been converted to ILF with a set of medium carbon extreme limbs
Just ordered the new Hoyt buffalo in ridge reaper camo with the Quattro limbs
I shoot .400 spine arrows with standard inserts ranging from 31" to 30.5" and 125 and 150 grain heads with all bows
-
I've been shooting my new Java Man Elk Heart, 54", 43@28 and that's my draw length too.
I have some GT3555s 31" set up with 200gr points, some 1535s 30" with 175gr points and some CE75s 30" with 145gr points. All shoot to the same point out to 20yds or so.
Sure hope to blood that bow on a turkey this spring.

Hoky Pete!! Never heard of anyone shooting a 35/55 out of a 62# bow not to mention a 71# bow with 350 out front to boot... :dunno:
-
I've been shooting my Black Widow PCH Autumn Oak riser with greybark limbs a lot lately. This makes a 60", 52#@29" bow. I also have a set of PCH V limbs that make a 58", 54@29" bow. Each set of limbs shoots a 30" Gold Tip Traditional with standard insert very well. I use a 200 grain point and I've had good luck with a 200 grain Zwickey Eskimos and Wensel Woodsman broadheads. Its really a coin toss decision, but I'm confident with either.
-
Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow. 50#@29.5" (I draw about 28.75"). Easton Axis Full Metal Jacket arrows, .500 spine, 29", 75gr brass insert, 150gr German Kinetic broadhead!

I have shot 55/75's out of both of those bows in the past, but would have the unexplained flyer from time to time... Tried the 35/55 and low and behold nock and feathers time after time after time... The MOAB isn't really a stretch as they are cut to center, but I was surprised that the 35/55's flew out of that weight Widow as well as they do... Since they are cut past center... But, at least for me, I shoot them out of all my Widows 65# and under with great success... And my draw is right at 30" with a Widow standard grip, and just over 29" with the MOAB's locator...
I do see one error from my post, with the MOABs, I shoot the 300 grain Big Jim Big-3 out of them not the 250 gr 1 1/4" VPA...
-
That goes against all reason, but I'm glad it works out for you and your rig.
-
That goes against all reason, but I'm glad it works out for you and your rig.
-
The go to is my Omega Imperial, 40@28 (i draw 29) shooting 30.75" Gold Tip pink nuge 500s with 225gr up front. Lately ive been shooting my Omega Shortbow alot, also 40@28 shooting the same arrows.
-
Ninety percent of my shooting is with one of three ASL style bows of my own make. The remainder with a Howatt Cavalier static recurve. The four fall into a range of 38 to 48 lbs at 28" and all are tuned to shoot with the same woodies.
Just about everything I use is made myself. It's usually for economy sake, but the satisfaction is not diminished if I happen to spend more time and money making something than it would take to purchase it. :biglaugh:
-
This one I just built to shoot til turkey season is over,58" bow 51 @ 28" with 30.5 3555s 3 fletch and 200 up front. Have some VPAs but will shoot woodsmen with 75 grain steel insert for turkeys.

It depends on how the shoulder surgery heals. If it goes well I will stay with my mid-50's Hills and Northern Mists. If progress is not all that good, I hope my 40# Hill will be manageable by then.
-
too many bows to list....from 56#s to 80....but all use same arrow. ...that could be of help...all but one 58#er shoot Arrow Dynamics trads.....the one shots the trad lites best.
-
Sierra longbow in signature, gold tip arrows, J. Holden calls, knives by myself, SBD string.
-
My elk setup for this year(and spring turkey too) is a Maddog Mountaineer. 64" and 55# @ 28 drawn to 27.5. Doug Fir shafts 80-85# spine cut to 29.5" BOP with a 75 grain woody weight behind a 190 grain Cutthroat 2 blade single bevel broadhead. Total arrow weight of around 720 grains.

Amazing, is all I can say...
Between the bow weight, point weight and long draw, you'd think those arrows would come out waving like a flag. Beats anything I've ever heard...and makes me wanna go do a little experimenting myself.
-
I have a 2000 Bighorn custom 3pc 62" draws 70 at 29 shooting off the shelf with B50 string. I have an Asbell type bow quiver mounted to it bolt-on. I shoot ash and hickory arrows mostly, some 2219s now and then. I mount 160 grain Ace Standard broadheads to them for hunting. My fletching is 3 helical 5.5 inch feathers either all white or all yellow with matching nock, usually no cap or crest, just all business.
-
Robertson Vision Falcon...55@30" GT Traditional shafts with a 100gr brass insert and a 125 gr Magnus Stinger 2 blade 545 Grain total arrow weight
-
My go to meat maker is a 50# 1968 Bear Cub I restored using the knowledge dug up on this site! Shooting a 500 spine easton Trad Only shaft cut to 29.5 with standard insert and 250 grains of Woodsman upfront. 540 grains total arrow weight. 3, 5 inch left wing fletching. There is a nice B50 string on her with some otter fur silencers. Brace Height is 7 7/8 inches. I draw to 28.5 inches. bow quiver or side quiver depending on the day. Awesome hat ALWAYS!
I have a couple others I use including a 74 K mag and a Montana, but my best shooting bow is that old Cub!

Sunset Hill 55 pounds at 28 inch draw, POC shafts 55-60 with 125 -145 grain heads 28 inches BOP
Everything from elk to turkey and small game

-
I'm shooting an A&H 66" 45@28 and my Slammer 64" 45@28. My arrow is a 30.5" GT 35/55 XT Hunter with a 200 grain tip. Right wing, 5" helical feathers. This gives me a finished arrow in excess of 450 gains.
-
My most comfortable bow I shoot currently is a 64-inch, 45lb, 1960 Kodiak Special. Shoots skinny 600 Axis Trads real good with 75 grain brass inserts and 80 grain RPS points, 4-inch Gateway feathers and a four color B-50 flemish string. Just a real stable bow and feels better than my lower wrist risered 1959 K Special and it shoots as well if not better than my 1962 63-inch K Special.
Use shell cordovan tabs (the Fivics all leather palm plate tab they used to make), either an old Bear or new Bates powder pouch with the tab and a real fine looking flat snap-on saddle leather side-quiver made by Hidehandler in West Virginia.
Feel mighty blessed to have such a fantastic shooting, great feeling, and classic looking Bear bow. Some may think shooting that old Bear is just nostalgia like muscle cars some of us grew up with, but that bow is something else.
-
Turkey hunting my blind bow is an A 58" Bear T/D with 48# limbs. Out of the blind when deer, bear or whatever I shoot 62" B riser Bear T/D with either 52# or 57# limbs. Axis arrows, three five inch white feathers with Bear razorheads or woodsmens.
-
This year I will be shooting my new Wes Wallace recurve. I have known Wes for over 25 years and just met him this past week. Stopped by his shop a bought a new bow
62" 53 @ 28.5 mountain camo. As always 3x5.5 shields on the backend and a sharp broadhead on the front
-
I am currently shooting. "Blacktail Sitka " Cocobola/myrtle woods, 52# @ 28". Arrows most of the time are aluminum 2216's, with a Zwickey " no mercy " on the business end. I also shoot cedar shafts on occasions. A " Steven Catts " side quiver is used when stump shooting. Great Northern strap on quiver used for hunting. A seal skin (hard to get ) rest along with " muskrat " silencers completes my setup. At 7.5" brace height she is quiet and deadly!
-
My set up is a 60in Black Widow PCH 49# with 30in Easton Legacy 2117 arrows with Grizzly broadheads.
-
Currently, HHA Wesley Special. Doug fir arrows with 160 grain Hill heads on them. Quiver by Soap Creek.
Still working on picking up a self bow, so it may change, but even if I do - I know there'll be situations that I'll prefer having my Wesley with me.

lets hear about some more set ups, fellas.
Shooting a 35/55 our of a #71 bow seems crazy, but if it works, it work!
-
Fedora Extreme 62" 55# @ 28. I pull to 31. Never measured, but I would expect the poundage at my draw length to be in the low to mid 60s.
Picked this up used on tradgang a couple of years ago. I've always wanted a fedora ever since I saw an interview with them in a magazine when I was a kid. I modified the grip to fit my hand better and wrapped it in beaver tail from big jim.
I shoot full length Carbon Express Heritage 350s. 125 grain Magnus Stinger. Standard insert with 70 additional grains of screw in weights behind. Final arrow weighs 625 grains.

Going to work on this McBroom ASL. Cedar lams, brown back and white belly. 48# @ 26". Same douglas fir, 160 grains out front.

A Roy Hall 50#@28 Navajo 3pc TD longbow 18" riser. 145gr out front with standard inserts GT 3555 hunters, 5" Shielded feathers.
American Saxon Longbow 55#@28 it shoots the same arrows just as well.
-
I've got a pile. I draw right at 29" and arrows are 30" bop. All have SBD strings, and Thunderhorn quivers.
1. 58" Toelke Chinook T/D, 51@28, 80-85 Surewood with 145gr. Broadhead.
2. 60" Toelke Chinook, marked 44 but pulls close to #50 at my draw length. GT5575 with 250 grain point.
3. 60" Griffin T/D, 47@28, 65-70 Surewood with 160 grain point.
4.64" Mohawk Longbow, 52@28, 65-70 Surewood, 160 grain broadhead.
Almost all have a wood, carbon, or aluminum arrow option tuned and ready to go. All set up subject to change at my whim.
-
60" Tall Tines 55#@28" Shooting 70/75 Douglas Fir with 190 Grizzly SB.
60" Blacktail 53#@28" Shooting 62/63 Sitka Spruce
with 160 grn Stos. CE150 with extra weight up front works also.
62" Tall Tines 51#@28" Waiting patiently for some 65/70 Douglas Fir.
My arrows are all about 29" give or take.
An embarrassment of riches. I really like all three of these bows.
-
I'm currently shooting a Hoyt Dorado, 55# @ 28'' with a 29'' draw.
I'm shooting black Axis 340's with 75 grain inserts and 150 grain stingers on the end.
However, I just ordered a new Widow PCH X, 53# @ 28'', so I'm hoping to be shooting that ASAP!
I'm going to be shooting 340's out of it as well, but I may have to play with the tip weight a bit.
-
Set-ups as follows:
My go-to hunting bow
Blackwidow PLX longbow, 75lb @ 28"
Standard hunting arrows (875 grain)
Surewood Douglas Fir #95-100 shafts
235 grain Grizzly Kodiak broadheads
3x 5" Trueflight feathers
Serious Buffalo hunting arrows (1030 grains)
Forrester Red Balau #110 shafts
235 grain Grizzly + 75 grain Woody Weight (310 grains)
3x 5" Trueflight
My play-time or form bow
Blackwidow PLX longbow, 55lb @ 28"
Normal arrows (660 grains)
Surewood Douglas Fir #70-75 shafts
160 grain points or blunts
3x 5" Trueflight feathers
Both shoot way better that I can, but I really REALLY enjoy using them.. Do shoot the 75 much better though.
-
50 lb Martin Savannah
Easton 2016 arrows cut to 29"
125-135 grain head
-
anyone else care to share their set up?

I am one of those crazy people who like recurves and longbows. So, right now I am in a transition to recurve from shooting longbows last year. My transition bow is a 60" 58# Maddog 50's style recurve with walnut riser and maple limbs. It is a great 'tweener bow. I am shooting 29" 65# hickory shafts with 125 grain field tips.
-
55lb grizzly and 45lbs ausable both shooting 55/60 spined poc with 125 grain points. 28 and 1/4 inch shafts i only draw to 26 so 52lbs and 42 lbs.
-
17" Morrison ilf riser, medium Border hex6.5 limbs, 53@29. 30.25" Easton Axis, or FMJ 340's, 50gr insert, 200gr heads. screamer...
-
Following my shoulder surgery, things have gone better than expected. I am back shooting my regular bows again. I am trying to work in a new Northern Mist Shelton in yew. It is 68" long and pulls 53# at 28". I only pull 25", so it likes light arrows. I prefer long arrows, so 29" cedar with 50/55 spine and 125 grain points are working pretty well. I am also working with 55/60 spine fir shafts and can't quite decide which I like better.

I use mainly 3 set up:
A "short" and light poundage recurve: either Toelke lynx recurve 60" or caribow tuktu EX 62" 57-58# @31" for winter / mountain hunting in my country as well TS/ small blind use. Arrow is full length GT velocity .340 or beman pro hunter + 50 gr brass insert 280-300 gr BH in the 650 gr range.
Works quite fine

Tuning should tell you if you are overspined or underspined, not what other folks say on the internet!

A whitetail setup developed on personal experience and the upmost personal confidence.
A setup far from testing the minimum limits. The game we pursue deserve nothing less than our best efforts.

Though I do agree with your statement, Bisch, I also agree with BigJim when he told me, "you aint special". Little did he know, I am special ;) .
I have several friends who have shared their set ups and MANY of them are shooting heavier weight and a way weaker spine.

My friend, you have to remember there are many variables in tuning along with the fact that people take tuning to many different levels. Some folks call their set-up good when the field point hits where they are looking and that is it, works for some.
Here is an example; I shoot a 43lb Black Widow Longbow with 400 GT's with 125 grain up front, those are the facts. Another fact this set-up shoots bullet holes in paper and bare shaft tunes perfect.
At first glance you may be thinking bullet holes my azz, but lets throw in a few more variables. I have a 30.5 inch draw, GT's are 32.5", arrows have 50 grain brass inserts, I use a great string. Well, you get the picture this set-up ends up at 15% FOC and 10 GPP.
It really all boils down to your set-up along with your form while turning. Like mentioned tuning is different for different people. I have been called a tuning nerd, heck I can't shoot worth a darn I might as well be good at something archery related. :)

Enjoyed seeing all these Setups! This will be my second season deer hunting with trad tackle...last year I came very close but was busted at the last second! Anyway, here is what I have for this season:
Bear Grizzly 50# @ 28"-- I draw 28.5"
400 Spine Gold Tip Full length (32") arrows with 165grain Zwickey No Mercy Single Bevel BH's and 4" parabolic feathers. 18.75 FOC according to the Grizzly Stik calculator
I want a heavier arrow setup, but these fly perfect, and I cant afford more stuff right now!
I have been reading this forum for quite a while now, but this is my first post...thanks to all who spread their knowledge here...its been a big help!

I am hunting this year with a LH recurve. Ebony handle with black glass limbs Tall Tines Curve (Great shooting bows!). Glove on hand, 58 pounds @ 26.75 DL, 28.5" 2216 with inserts for glue on BH (like a swadged arrow), VPA 190 grain BH, 3 x 4.70 Flex Fletch vanes, homemade toothbrush arrow rest, modified (homebrew) EW Bateman hood with Great Northern gripper Bow Quiver, 12 strand string (standard TT bowstring), wool puff silencers. This year my method is to stay on the ground and hunt from natural brush blinds and still hunt when conditions lend themselves to that.

Tough to choose since I bounce back and forth between two, but my favorite is my 62# Abbott longbow. Shooting 31" GT Trads 3555 with 200 grain Grizzlies. I was surprised that that spine flew so well out of a bow of that draw weight, but they fly like darts.
-
For the past month I have strictly been shooting my widow PCHX 58" 57#@27. Broke down and put a clicker on it and have been working on my shot as of late. Arrows are Easton aftermaths with 300gr upfront and fletched with four 3" parabolics
-
Well I have it narrowed down to 3 different bows and several different arrow set ups. My two main hunting bows are my Shrew Classic Hunter 54" and [email protected]" and my Bear Super K 60" and 50@28. However this year I am going to try my Huron Longbow 64" and [email protected] I shoot this bow the best I am just having a hard time getting used to using such a long bow in my hunting style.
My arrow set ups are all full length and are as follows;
GT 35/55 with 175grn up front using Wensel Woodsmen or Grizzly single bevel s.
GT 55/75 with 250 and 300grn up front using Wensel Woodsmen or Grizzly single.
Cedar arrows 60/65 spine 225grn up front using Woody Weights and Wensel Woodsmens.

Bob Lee Bicentenial, 62" recurve, 54# @ 28", Gold Tip Black Label with Zwickey Eskilite broadheads, 4" Gateway feathers, Rick Barbee string (bought several while he was still making them), Barbee Death Adder Tab, and Selway bolt on quiver. The Black Labels are a new edition for me this year. They perform pretty darn good so far.
I have a lot of confidence in my setup. I think that that is critical (along with a little luck and skill) to being successful in the woods. Not saying it's the best setup but it's the best for me. There's so many good bows/setups out there. Kinda glad I don't have unlimited income because I would probably spend all my time and money trying different equipment. Oh yeah, Old Man climbing stands and Marine Pattern Fatigues work great.
