Title: The beauty of archery.
Post by: bear bowman on February 17, 2016, 04:49:00 PM
When my oldest daughter was young and up until she was about 12, we did everything together. While she was old enough to hunt, she would accompany me on the warm days. She was a die hard fisherman during those years as well. Well, as things go, she got older and friends became more important and we didn't do much of anything together. Well finally, when she turned 22, she decided she wanted to start shooting and possibly bowhunting with dad. Lets just say that the last year has been amazing. I've spent more time with her during this time than probably the last 10 combined. We shoot together a lot and hunted together when our schedules worked out. She has told me on numerous occasions that she missed me during those teen years as I did her. It's amazing that something as simple as bows and arrows can restore and strengthen a relationship. Just another reason I love this sport. Thanks for reading.

I have 2 boys, 12 and 8. While I'm hoping it won't be as bad with boys, I'm not looking forward to this period, which is fast approaching with the 12y/o. Not having yet gone thru it I can't say I know how you feel, but I think I have a pretty good idea when I imagine it. Very glad you have the opportunity to spend time with her once again doing something you love. I can only hope it goes as well with mine.

The man you are and obviously have been caused her to "return."  Sounds like you have a very special relationship!!

That is part of the pain of being a parent. Children grow up and make their own way, which sometimes does not include us. But one of the greatest joys of parenthood is when that path goes full circle, and they find the way back to us. I am glad that you realize what a lucky father you are. This speaks well of both you and your daughter.

That's awesome, occasionally my daughter will ask if she can shoot her bow and it's all I can do to get it strung up fast enough. Few things get me that excited. She is going on 19 and in college thankfully she is close to home. I feel blessed that she still wants to spend time with me. I enjoy every minute!

I have one seven year old daughter.  Right now she tags along with Dad on scouting trips, deer hunts, duck hunts, shoots a St.Joe River bow and is pretty much the lone soldier among the boys.  I know I'm going to lose her eventually but your post gives me hope.  Thanks.

It happens with boys too.  My oldest is 22 and his brother is 19.  Both of them pretty much lost all interest in bows and hunitng in general during High School - sports, girls, friends, video games, girls (did I mention girls?). Anyway my oldest has been totally immersed in college and collegiate athletics the past 4 years.  He will be graduating in a few months, and I was really surprised when I got to see him recently.  He said he really missed going out bowhunting with me and being in the woods,  he said once he graduates he hopes to be able to get back into shooting and hunting together.  I'm crossing my fingers!

Top 3 Reasons 2.23 million kids loved archery last year:
1. Fun (flight of the arrow)
2. Getting better at something through practice.
3. New archery friends.

53% of kids feel better about themselves after learning to shoot a bow.
