Title: CWD in MO
Post by: kennym on February 12, 2016, 05:26:00 PM
This is of great concern to me. The MDC in an effort to control the spread of it from the origination at a game farm East of our place has increased the area of depopulation.

They bait, shoot, test, take to a locker, and give the deer to a food pantry if tested negative.

I don't know how long it will take to spread to our area or if it will, but it is a day I dread.

Right now new cases are still about the county line to the East about 20 miles as they have been for a couple years. There is one new case inside Linn Co. about the same distance to the Southeast. And a new case in Franklin Co. West of Saint Louis. Where that came from, who knows?

All we can do is stick to the rules the MDC has laid out on transporting harvested deer, and hope for the best.

Here is a map of the summary...

Yet another reason for my opposition to game farms. Nixon, agree or not with all his policy's, did a fine job vetoing that farm burea bill.

We have just had the first cases in Tx in the last year. Most came from one breeder facility, but they have found it at the places the deer were shipped to. The breeders are all up in arms because of restaints put on them. I just don't think there should be any breeding and selling of the deer. They should breed on their own in the wild!!!

Very sad and scary. With Nothing to stop it with, spread is eminent..its a matter of time. I sure hope some means of control is found soon because its serious stuff.

The MDC has been pretty proactive on this I am surprised there is more showing up.

Yep.  Primarily spread through game farms, and those upright citizens who take it upon themselves to improve the local gene pool by buying and releasing game farm animals. More regulations in place to prevent that now, but it still occurs.

Franklin County-- I know they are baiting then killing to test deer here between Villa Ridge and Union MO...  I watched a conservation dept. pickup full of deer pass me last week.  Must have been six or maybe more Whitetails piled in that truck...

Kenny, I hate to hear that! I'm supposed to be hunting with you next December with Daniel! I guess if we can't hunt deer we can always drink coffee and lie about it! Lol

Yep, always a game farm somehow involved.  How we continue to allow those operations to exist is beyond my comprehension.  Can you say political contributions?  It makes me sick to my stomach!

Wisconsin has proven the folly of depopulation attempts. Impossible in areas with private land.  But it seems that every new state that has to deal with this just have to try.  Sadly, it only delays the inevitable.

The only way they could possibly have an impact is to try to get ahead of it and get rid of the game farms up front.  And the money hungry politicians just can't keep from sticking their hand out and accepting contributions from the game farm industry.  As in most things in our society, if you follow the money you will find the answers to the problem.

And if CWD is not enough to worry about, now we have to wonder how the discovery of Malaria in whitetail deer is going to affect things.  Ya never know.

I don't think you have anything to worry about yet Randy. It has been over East for several years. The new case in Linn Co. is SE of Brookfield , best I can tell. Still 15 miles off and only one deer.

Still bad enough, they are depopulating the deer over there(bait and kill). I suppose eventually it will be over here, but maybe they can get a handle on it before it gets here.

As said, always seems to start at a game farm.

Deer aren't supposed to be caged up in mass quantities, nature will eliminate some when the population gets too high.....   :(

I think the first case was in CO or WY in the 60s. Anybody from the West have any insight on how or what the longterm effects are?

The deer found in Franklin county it turns out was shot by a husband up north and he brought it home to have his wife tag it.  They got caught.  At least that is the story one of my co-workers that follows this closely told me.

Wow, that seems pretty harsh.

Our family farm is in Osage county and it's sad to hear that this may be a bigger problem in the future.  I still think to this day that the MDC is the best out there and they're doing the right thing with their changes in regulations.

I just hope hunters in those counties follow up and do the right thing and get their kills tested.

It's a shame because since the MDC instituted the 4-pt rule, we've been seeing more 8-12pt bucks than we've ever seen.  4-pt rule is out the window in the CWD areas.  The last time I was able to head home to hunt a couple years ago, in 1 week, I saw 12 different 8 and 10 point bucks.

Last year my uncle killed the biggest deer on the property since we've owned it in the 70s.  230lb 12-pt.  He was a beast.

We'll be doing our part to max out tags to help prevent spread.  Unfortuntely, that's about all we can do

Thanks Donovan, I had seen that site before but read some more from it today.

Adam, the 4 point rule did help the age of the bucks here too. After they went back to the shoot anything rule, folks had seen what letting them grow a couple years could do,so they don't go with the brown/down mindset as much now.

I agree the MDC is one of the best agencies in the nation.

No problem Kenny, that website is an excellent resource, but man it's almost overwhelming. You have to read just a little bit at a time, at least I did anyways!
