Title: New from Imlay City, MI
Post by: Dbowhunter on February 08, 2016, 07:17:00 PM
Just wanted to introduce myself. I am new to the forum and reside near Imlay City, MI.

I have shot and hunted with compound equipment since I was 10, but am looking to make my first venture into the traditional archery world.

Looking to maybe find a couple local folks with some experience to meet up with and learn a few tips, tricks, and form basics before picking up my won bow, so I know what to look for.

I am a tall guy with a 31.5 draw on my compound. I am sure that has it's equipment quirks in traditional archery like it does with compounds.

I am also a happily married father of two kids under three years old and work in the railroad industry training railroad track inspectors.

Looking forward to learning a lot.

Thanks for your time.

Good to meet you but... did you read the rules. NO pics. of compound bows as this is a trad site only. Just some friendly advice.

I recall no discussion of other topics but not a specific request for no pictures. That's okay, it was easy to delete..

Thanks for the welcome and heads up.

Hi DBowhunter and Welcome!  Lot's of good information on this site (and not just in the pow wow.) Michigan is a great state to be a trad archer.  Lot's of good organizations in your state (Michigan Longbow Association).  And Michigan is home to one of the best Traditional Archery Expos in the country - the Annual Traditional Archery Expo in Kalamazoo.  The bad news is that you just missed it.  It takes place the last weekend of January each year.  This years show was fantastic. But don't worry, you'll have a year to learn and then you can go to the show and try out many of the bows you will hear about.  Again - Welcome!

Steve

Welcome!  Your lucky to be from Michigan if getting into traditional archery.  Lots of it around there.  Look up the Michigan Bowman club (not sure on name) and go to Compton Traditional Bowhunter Rendezvous in June at Berrien Springs.  I bet you will love it!

Only advise I can give is don't over bow yourself with a real heavy bow, try and shoot several types to see what you like and look into some good trad books or videos for some pointers.  Welcome to the club!

Welcome from Pentwater wish I was closer I have some bows you could try! Compton will be awesome check it out. Jays has a good selection of Trad gear so that's some place to start also. Remember most trad bows are weighted at 28" draw and increase 3 lbs per inch past that maybe more of the bows is shorter because it may begin to stack if not designed to be drawn to 31.5". Call me up if you want to chat.

Welcome! Michigan has a lot of great Bowyers and if in the future you decide you want a custom build(which you eventually will) you couldn't go wrong with any of them.
We also have a number of great Trad archery events and shoots every year that are well worth attending, and the Michigan Bunny stomp is only a few weeks away(check out the thread here on TG).

Welcome from a Yooper transplanted to Colorado.

Longish draw, eh?  You might be a candidate for a Hill style.

Thank you everyone for the welcome's and kind words.

Perhaps some of the local archery shoots would be worth a visit  even if I don't yet have a bow.

Thanks again, I am glad so many reached out and offered opportunities to shoot and chat.

This should be fun.

Welcome.

Consider joining the Michigan Longbow Association and the Michigan Traditional Bowhunters, both good organizations.

Here is a link to the MLA Events page:

http://www.michiganlongbow.org/upcoming/

There are many different events / shoots to go to. Everyone is very friendly and very helpful at the shoots. It's a good opportunity to try out different models and styles of bows.

Hope that helps.

I hope you enjoy your Traditional journey. Have fun

Welcome.

I think you should go to the events even if you dont have a  bow.  see if you can tag along on a course and ask questions.  Most guys will probably let you shoot their bows if you ask.

Also, You may want to pick up a used older production recurve and shoot it until you figure out what you will like because all bows are different. Only way to find out what you like is to shoot a lot of bows.  Best way to do that is to go to the bigger events and shoots where there are vendors.

I was in your shoes about 7 years ago.  I was fortunate enough to meet a  few local guys from Trad gang before I went to my first shoot. One of them who is a good friend of mine now brought a bunch of bows in the low 40's weight to try. I shot one of the bows with my poorly matched compound arrows until my arms wanted to fall off.

After a visit to his house the following week he offered to let me borrow a  bow indefinitely until I had one of my own.  I was able to give his bow back about 8-9 months later.  I hunted the first year with it.

Anyhow, what I am getting at is talk with people, ask questions and enjoy the journey. You dont need a bow to go to events.  Trust me, if you have any money left over after feeding the kids, you will be bringing one home eventually.

Good luck, Have fun and Welcome from NY!    :wavey:
