Title: Are you in the sticks?
Post by: VA Elite on January 25, 2016, 07:03:00 PM
No pun intended. But do you live in the sticks and are able to walk out your door to got bowhunting? I did growning up, but we got pushed out of farming for "progress" and eminent domain is a real thing. Too bad we didn't actually own the 1500 acres, it sold for 8 million $. We were like the share croppers of the old south. But I long for those days being able to just literally walk out my front or back door and be in the woods in less than 30 seconds...

I can walk across the street and hunt in a river bottom where I live now.  I grew up in a place I could hunt outside my back door or across the street.  We used to camp out in the woods behind the house.  It's all grown up back there now with sub-divisions.

I live in town...but it's a small town. I have a 2k acre lease 10 minutes away and 160k acres of National Forest in my county and the county south of me, so I don't have to go far to hunt. I'd love to move out of town though even if it was a small place. 10 or 15 acres would be plenty for me to hunt on if I owned it.

For two falls now I have lived within 50 yards of about 1500 acres of national forest that is archery hunting only...and haven't hunted there yet.  It is severely grown up and needs some management, such as a prescription burn, but its location along side an interstate highway and near a subdivision prevented it from being burned when it should have been. Now it is way too far gone to burn.

I live in town, but own an 80 with a cabin on it 300 miles to the north, surrounded by thousands of acres of public land.  I can walk out the door and be hunting.  One of my better stands is about 200 yards south of the cabin.

Worked all my life to be able to buy my little piece of paradise.  The drive to it is a bit long, but it's remote (away from people) and I use it every chance I get.

There is a tree about 300 yards from my back steps I have tradbow killed 19 deer from. Thats just one spot there are several more but that one is best. I killed a big hog and 8 deer from another half that far from the house but that section of swamp got cut out and is now one heck of a bedding thicket.
I built a new longbow this weekend and walked near a mile loop on a neighbors place I can hunt shooting stumps learning my new hunting partner. RC

I can change my clothes and hop over the stone wall and be hunting. 60 acres or so that I don't own but have permission. Not the greatest hunting area ,as there are other hunters but I have been fairly successful over the years. Tens of thousands of acres nearby that is state hunting land and is under 45 minutes from my home.

If you can't pee off the back porch you live too close to town!

I hunt deer and small game in a woodlot 200 yd behind the house.

It is a very unique thing these days to grow up on a farm or land you can hunt without getting in a car. I just read a report from The Natural Resource Council that we are losing 1 acre of farm land per minute in the U.S., breaks my heart.

My brothers  farm is 1 mile away and I have killed between 100 and 120 deer within 200 yards of my back porch. I am truly blessed to have hundreds of acres of neighbors land to hunt on while only paying taxes on 2.

I could shoot mule deer in my back yard but because of a family tradition of regarding them as pets I will not do that...there is no such tradition for elk though and I fully expect to see one in my yard one day

I have a couple of stands behind the house on 5 1/2 acres. Haven't  killed anything but time there. I have saw a few and passed up shots. Get lots of night time trail cam pics but they rarely make it to my property in the daytime. it is nice to be able to get a quick hunt in if I don't have time to go elsewhere.

Fortunate to have several hundred acres across the street from my house to hunt.  Have taken many nice deer there over the past 20 years.

I own 64 acres and walk out the back door to hunt.  About 40 of the acres is currently cropland that I will be gradually reclaiming for habitat and food plots.  Spring will be busy planting trees, shrubs, forbs, prairie grass, and food plots.

One of my best stands is about 125 yards behind the house and I've been eyeing up a tree with a couple good trails passing by that is less than half that.  Of course there are multiple stands a bit further away.

I know that I am fortunate to have what I do.  But it all started many years ago when we started squirreling away $200 each month toward a down payment.  We had a plan, and eventually we made it happen over a long period of time.  It all worked out better than I could have dreamed.  If you want something bad enough don't wait for it to fall in your lap.  Set goals, and make it happen!

I live in a neighborhood of 1ac lots. Up till this year we could hunt on our property. A new law was passed, and now we can't unless you have over 10ac. I only "hunted" on my place one year when we had some special permits issued by the game dept. Shot 9 deer that year in my yard, but I am not sure it was actually hunting!

Bought our 36 acres 5 years ago; love having the room to hunt, shoot, stumpshoot, etc. Took a walk out back today after the blizzard...just because. Saw deer, too, and lots of tracks. Not really in the sticks, but a foot of snow made it feel that way.

When I was a kid I could hunt out the back door. There wasn't posted sign with in 10 miles. Everybody knew everybody and got along. Heck, I bought a shotgun from my shop teacher and brought it home on the school bus. Different times then...and they say things are better now......Now I have to drive to hunt.....not far 15-45 minutes but it was nice when I was younger.

Right out the back door woods are 10 yards away. No visible neighbors any direction. Pee off the porch! My land and the neighbors land and then you hit public. Shot several that I just had to give a good shove to make it down the hill to the garage.(Pretty steep). They aren't pets here. They know better than to come into our yard. Front door neighbor has 200 acres and butts up to a land locked public tract of about 600 acres. Brother has Part of the land lock property across the road. Thousands of acres of public within 10 minute drive of the house.  I am truly blessed in this day and age. Not much leasing in our area (yet) either. I wouldn't be able to handle the concrete jungle!!

We own 15 acres here at the house. Im also the only person who is permitted to hunt my neighbor's 40 acres. Every few years there's a nice buck that calls this area home and I try for them when I catch them on trail cam. I usually let the does and little bucks walk as we are not just overrun with deer here...we have almost all of them named.

Lots of turkey here to hunt. I got skunked on my hunting lease one morning a few years back. When I came back home and stepped outa the truck and slammed the door a turkey gobbled at it. Grabbed my gear back outa the truck and slammed the door again to see if he would gobble so I could locate him more exactly...he obliged me. 15 minutes later I was carrying him back up out of the holler to the house.

My home is a mile back from the county road.  I can walk out my door and hunt the farm next door and some connecting parcels, about 500 acres.  I'm the only bow hunter on about 100 of them.  I don't shoot the deer on the front lawn.

I've got a little 2 acre place right in the middle of 20 acre and 40 acre farms & ranches.... or should i say used to be ranches... the neighbor to the south bought that 40 acre spread and started growing grapes.        No hunting over there any more... but i have 20 acres of timber to the east, and 33 acres to the west which is wide open farm land i can hunt.

Unfortunately we've had a big cat move into the area and we don't see too many deer any more. I haven't seen the cougar personally, but have seen sign. The neighbor saw her dragging a small deer across the field in October this year. From the sounds of it she's running 150-175 pounds. Big feet on that cat too.... I keep a smoke pole handy  for the day i finally see it.     :goldtooth:

I guess you could call this place in the sticks if ya wanted too.... The house has been here since 1883.... It was WAY out in the sticks once upon a time.

I live in the sticks for sure. hour and a half from the closest "city" (asheville). 30 minutes to get to a little mountain town. I live next to the Nantahala national forest. 500,000 acres or so.  Deer numbers are low but hunting pressure during bow season is non existent. I hunted hard for four months and never saw another hunter. Sometimes I'm jealous of guys with nice leases and good deer herds but I remember that within a one hour drive there is more public hunting ground than I could scout in a lifetime. Theres some real wilderness areas out here too and thats cool.

Lucky enough to still be able to do that even here in the most densely populated state in the union. Deer and turkey in my front yard. Came home a few years ago, walked up on my back deck and here's a nice little six point bedded about twenty yards away under a forsythia bush. Just couldn't shoot it though. And I can still pee off the back deck. In fact, I could even do it off the front deck if I so wish.

We have 20 acres and our house sits almost in the middle of it. Moved here in 84. Back then I could hunt in any direction about as far as I wanted to walk, no one cared. Not any more. Most of the good hunting land has been leased or bought by out of state hunters. My closest neighbors still allow me to hunt, which I'm grateful for. Iowa does have public hunting ground, but not to the extent of some other states. Even though we can't go back to the way it use to be, I feel very fortunate that I have places to hunt for free.

I don't live in the sticks, about 6 miles from town.

For all my 45+ years of bowhunting I've hunted other people's land except when I travel west. I am a retired wildlife biologist and for years wrote wildlife management plans for other people's farms.  I always dreamed of owning some land of my own that I could improve.

I'm in the process of buying the place I've hunted on for the past 12 years...very excited about it.

Live in the mountains seven miles from a small town of about 500 people here in N. Idaho. If I walk across the road, I can go about 80 miles on usfs land before seeing a home or black top. Leave the window open a bit in the fall and go to sleep listening to the bulls bugle. Have had moose, lion, elk, bear and of course deer in the front yard. I am content.

I live in NW Montana and could hunt off of my porch if I choose to. We don't hunt from the house though. Too much fun watching the elk and deer trying to get into my horse hay storage. The property backs up to the national forest and is a major travel corridor for a heard of about 300 elk. My wife killed a cow elk this year and I killed a small rag horn last year off our property. I love where we live.

Not really "the sticks", but nice and quiet and private. We have 250 acres here by the house and lots of other rural neighbors'land to hunt.
The deer are right in the yard, nice buck rub on some Sumac about 60' from my back door, happens every year. Our house is located on the inside corner of what we call the front field. About 200 yards behind the house is a classic rub line. Freshened every year as well.
This place will "see me out".

I live on 4 acres on the edge of a very small town in Indiana farm country.

I can hunt my backyard and that's what got me back into deer hunting some years back.

Unfortunately, I just don't get many deer through here anymore. I think it's primarily due to changes on the surrounding farms...they've cut down all the cover.

Even though I live out in "the country" I really don't have anyplace worth hunting. Most who own good ground hunt it themselves or lease it out.

I live about 10 miles from a 4500 acre state WMA. I see plenty of deer out there during the off season. During deer season I mostly only see people and tree stands. It's even hard to find squirrels there.

I didn't even buy a tag this past season. I went fishing instead.

It's tough because I can't drive to work without deer trying to bounce off my bumper but I can't hunt any of those deer.

The last few deer I put in the freezer were killed with my dodge truck. LOL, I think I'll trade one of my bows for a good sturdy "brush" guard.

Massachusetts I can walk right behind my house and hunt and I do get a deer every year but I honestly don't want to hunt out there too much because I don't want to ruin it!  Nah I still prefer driving 46 miles each way to hunt another state.

once I retire I'm selling everything and going south hopefully where I can do the same thing, maybe MD, WV, NC not sure yet.

Yes! Buffalo literally in my back yard! Had to tell the Better Half to be careful if she took the dog for the usual walk this evening, as I spied a couple of big, grey gangsters hanging-out by the power station. Was doing my practice with my PCHX as I try to get back into the archery way of life... and a buffalo was standing down by the spring just watching me smacking (or attempting to smack) the plastic milk bottle. Love it here!

we are super lucky. live on an island in the PNW of canada-- 3 930 sq. miles, 150 islands ,and  4500 residents spread over 6 small communities. our village only has 350 residents. our property backs onto crown land- and i can walk out my door and be hunting real quick.
additionally we get 15 tags a year- season 9 months long, plus a month of bear season in there- so total 10 months hunting a year!
beach hunting, bush hunting and some beautiful alpine, if a fella wants to walk!

downsides: its a coastal rain forest- lots of rain, thick bush, more rain, and rains sometimes too!
certainly paradise for me- but i have seen some awesome pics of other folks hunting areas- i just love the decidious hardwood forests.

I'm fortunate enough to live on a family farm that my grand dad had since way before I was born. 208 acres and my drive way is over 500 ft long. Closest blacktop is just over 2 miles away. My wife shot a 130 " deer from the porch about 10 years ago, but I usually go out to the back 40.... the walk in helps me get mymind right.....nothing beats seeing wildlife from the house!

God bless,

Rodd

200 yards from home.  Very lucky to walk out of the house and able to bowhunt.

Before I got into Archery I managed a couple farms. Had Kudu, Eland, Impala and Warthog on my doorstep.
Wasted opportunity.
I moved to a small city/town to find a wife (expand the gene pool as we joke).
I'm working hard to move back out into the bush.
