Title: Alu footed Carbons vs FMJ/ACC & Tapered Shafts
Post by: Soilarch on January 25, 2016, 05:38:00 PM
Since I'm getting my feet wet again I wondered if going to the higher priced FMJ or Tapered shaft.

I'm normally "fighting" to get my overall arrowweight up more than I am having to fight broken arrows.  I think I broke one ICS that was footed with aluminum.  All others have been lost or "I feel dumb" moments.

FMJ or Grizz***ks worth it?

All I shoot is FMJ's. I am convinced they are worth it. They are very consistent in spine, weight, and straightness. I cannot say the same for some other big brand arrow shafts I have shot in the past!

Terry it's hard to give specifics cause I'm tryimg to get back up and running.  48#@28 ILF and I'd like to keep arrows as long as possble. Goal would be anything north of 15gpp, so 750-800.  I'd like to use at least 100gr insert and 125s...but I'm fine going all the way up on tip weight.
Last time I was building arrows was for a 60-ish Predator and getting them heavy enough had me trying multiple inserts, weed trimmer line, rope, aquarium tubing and eventually bought the tubes from 3Rivers.  I don't want to play that game again because everything either, rattled, bunched, or necessitated gluing knocks. Not my flavor, and I could have just bought high dollars arrows and been money ahead.

Yes, I think FMJs and especially Grizzly Stiks are worth every penny if you're trying to achieve high FOC

If you're looking for heavy, then there are numerous arrow shafts now available. FMJ makes a dangerous game shaft that is considerably heavier than the standard shaft. Also, gold tip makes a Byron Ferguson Heavy Hitter shaft that is pretty high on the grains per inch. Either of these would be a good place to start. It's also possible to find heavy hard wood shafts if you'd prefer wood.

Take a look at the micro diameter shafts like Black Eagles Deep Impact. They use an outsert which foot the shaft almost an inch. Tough arrows. They won't have the gpi that an FMJ will but myself currently using both, I can tell you the Deep Impacts are waaaaaaay more durable. I increased my gpi by adding weight behind the nock.
