My son is in the Air Force and stationed in Anchorage. My wife and I are planning a visit this coming July. Any trad shops in the area to visit?
I don't know of any, but tell your son to enjoy every second of being at Elmendorf. I was there in 85 thru spring of 88. I think there was/is a traditional archery club on base. Have him check to confirm.
Salmon will be running in July. Go get some!
Will do! And, I'm definitely going to get after a salmon or two.
I was there from 2006-2010. AK is my favorite place on earth. No trad shops there when I was there.
I think Bud is correct. Archery right on the base.Good Salmon fishing right behind the Railroad station in Anchorage. I was at Fort Richardson....tell your son to enjoy Elmendorf.

Bub B you and I were there at the same time. Black sheep bowmen then had an indoor range in the basement of a building, and a nice outdoor range on the far side of the flight line. I loved AK and my tour at Elmendorf. No trad shops back then.

When I left in 2010 Black Sheep Bowmen had a range in an old building and an outdoor range on base. Sketch on Ft Rich. Have to register firearms with provost Marshall.
Ak bow hunting supply is run out of Anchorage, but when I was there there wasn't a shop. Even in town I would have to order online and receive by mail.
He Should enjoy trips to the Kenai and Russian river confluence. Head to hope for fun catching Pinks in resurrection creek. Up to the little Susitna for some silvers. Soldatna for salmon as well. A trip for caribou up north shouldn't be hard for him.
Go see the game museum on base. Go fishing if you can.
Love Alaska.

I think you're right. there is an Anchorage address but I believe they're in the lower 48. Been a long time since I've been there but it is an unforgettable outdoor experience. Being at Fort Rich in the infantry enabled me to go to Nome, the Yukon Territory, fish and hunt the rivers of Delta Junction area around Greely. Made it to the Brooks Range also. These hunts today are really expensive. I can only thank Uncle Sam for the free ride. Planned to return last year with my Grandson but I'll wait'll next year as he preps for college.

Try Backcountry archery in Anchorage. Not a trad shop but the owner is a longtime trad shooter. Have not been in his shop since he moved it, so cant speak to what he carries.
Alaska Bowhunting supply used to be run out of Ed's garage and basically mail order. His son handles most of the business from Seattle now.
Just an fyi they combined Ft Rich and Elmendorf a few years ago and call it JBER, for Joint Base etc.
I'll be moving there from Kenai in a few months and might have some better info for you then.
Hey Chinook
Good luck with the move. Now I have someone to vist and shoot with...lol

Russian Reds! Loved catching them!!
Great memories...
Thanks to all who replied!
If you end up in the Mat-Su, check out the Screaming Eagle shop and range. It's a good mix of trad and the other arrow launchers. They maintain a nice selection of Tolke bows and some trad gear. The range is rather large and well lit, and is run good folks.
