Title: Bear Quest 10 Medicine...Pros and Cons with Alum. footing on Gold Tips 5575
Post by: 23feetupandhappy on January 20, 2016, 08:03:00 AM
I will be working up some Bear Quest 10 medicine soon, so....

I seen a recant post on the different size aluminum shafts you can use for footing your carbons and got to wondering......

Does this hinder penetration since this will now increase your shaft dia. right behind your broad head?    :saywhat:

I've never noticed a penetration problem while using a footing. They are a big plus for beefing up your arrows! I'm headed to Bear Quest 10 also but will be there the 2nd week, good luck with your arrow setup!

I foot carbons for stumping, but for Bear Quest 9 I just used Carbon Express weight forward shafts, 100 gr brass inserts and ACE standard heads with Alum adaptors total = 600gr. I shot a 45 ILF Zipper with Dryad Static Limbs. Shot a 150 LB. boar and got a pass thru at 7 steps. You foot them if you want but it's not necessary. That bear was dead in less than 10 seconds. Have fun!!

Sounds like a good setup Ron!

These Bear Quest medicine arrows will be fresh for Bear Quest but will be my everyday working arrow after that...
Deer, Turkeys and stump shooting   :archer:

So I Im not concerned per say that the footing will be Needed for bears but want it for the overall toughness of an everyday working arrow.

My setup will be a 47# Black Widow PTF shooting a 5575 Gold Tip tipped with a 175gr 3 blade VPA with a  total arrow weight of 540gr.   :goldtooth:

I use 2219 1.25" footing on my 5575's and can't say if it helps with penetration but it sure makes for one tough arrow. Good luck on your hunt!!!

I don't see where the footing would hinder penetration.  That VPA three blade is going to open up a larger hole than the shaft.  Good luck @ BQ and post pictures!

Your broad head will cut plenty of room for the footing...no problem either way.  Just stay away from the shoulder  :)

I don't think a footing will be necessary. But it can't hurt. And I'm pretty sure like stated above broad-head will cut a path for penetration. On my first bear quest I was told bear aren't that tough (hide/fur etc.) my set up was a 45# ben Pearson bow that was probably pulling 40# 11yd shot pass through. Plain old 3555GT blem. With 100 gr insert and 150 woodsman.
Look forward to meeting you in June!!

Back in my compound days I shot a nice mule deer In the front shoulder.  The report from the arrow sounded like it had hit a tree.  As the deer ran off I saw the arrow sticking out of the shoulder with almost no penetration.  Once I found my arrow It was obvious that I had hit a solid bone that stopped the arrow in it's tracks.  The end of the arrow where the broad head was was splintered where the broad head had been driven up the shaft.  Since I started trad shooting I have thought about that deer a lot.  I was in the mode of light fast arrows which was a mistake, but further more have thought that if the shaft was footed and didn't explode on impact that it may have transferred more kenetic energy into the deer, and might have broke that bone or made its way around it.
Long story short, I think that footing can only help with penitration.

When I was doing a work up for Africa in 2014, among other things I did was to test some big aluminum arrows (23/64" dia).  I learned that they didn't get as much penetration as the carbons.  My belief is that the cross sectional density was lower with the aluminum arrows even though the overall weight was higher.

That said, two things:  (1) the difference wasn't a major factor. (2) black bear are relatively easy to kill at any rate, only requiring the same arrow you would use for whitetail deer.

For myself, I ended up using Gold Tip Traditional carbon, 300 spine arrows so I could add to the point weight.

Good luck.  Bear hunting is a blast!  You'll have a great time.

In my opinion any & all of the above arrow combo's will work,MOST important is be sure you have PERFECT arrow flight (shots are UP-CLOSE & personal)right out of the gate, SHARP Broadhead, broadside shot, front leg forward and be sure Bear is relaxed. When double lung shot a Bear dies quicker than a Whitetail !!!!
