I am having a thunderstick built and I was curious about the wood combinations others have had. Some pictures would be helpful too!
I was hoping to use some darker woods in the riser. I plan on getting a flared riser.
Maybe bocote with a darker wood as the flare?
I also like the stained quilted maple limbs. Just looking for ideas and examples of things that Jim has done before.
I know Terry green has some pictures of his thundersticks and I have looked through a bunch. If Terry could chime in about the specifics of the woods used that would be awesome because he has some real beauts!
Thanks,
Kevin
Have a Thunderstick Mag I acquired here on the classifieds. Dark wood in the riser - I think Cocobolo, not sure-and stained red elm limbs (kind of a medium walnut shade).
I think the dark riser and medium limbs look really nice.
Pic posting impaired here, or I'd offer some. Gotta ask; I thought Jim was retiring from making bows, how'd you order one?
I really like the tamo ash lams.....
bacote and kingwood or a slightly figured ebony as a flare would look great....as would the reverse of that....might even look better with bacote as the flare.
Did you get my E-Mail Kevin?
Cocobolo, Bubinga, Bocote, opposite Zircote either way would get you that dark riser you're looking for... I like the Quilted Maple too, but Tamo Ash, Curley Anigre look good, and I like Osage as both riser and veneer wood... Especially when it turns into the dark honey color with age...
Jeff, yes sorry I just read it. I checked my other email instead of the one in my profile earlier. Thanks for your reply!
I'm thinking maybe bocote with ziricote flare and a dark walnut stained quilted maple limb with antler tips.
yes....zircote....that's the 'ebony' I was talking about.
Kevin:::Some pics of my TS MOAB.
Quilted maple(stained cherry)limbs with a cocobolo riser.
Will try to get pics of my TS Mag.It has quilted maple(stained walnut)limbs and bocote riser.

I just have a simple Cocobolo riser with bamboo limbs. Plain but I love it. It's stays at the camp in case the mood to hunt it shoot strikes me. I can go months without shooting it and still first shot is plenty good enough for vitals
Sold my TS III a while back but it had a beautiful cocobolo riser with red elm laminations under clear glass and bamboo cores. One of the finest shooting longbows out there
Had a TS III with curly maple laminations over bamboo cores and purple heart riser. It broke free from my pick-up truck so I replaced it with a MOAB with same woods. TS III was great but MOAB is one of the smoothest shooting bows I have had.
I had two sister bows made for two friends of mine that wanted to learn to shoot trad....so I came up with these combos for them....they are the same except the risera are reversed....
click here...bacote n cocobolo also (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=118681#000000)
Terry texted me pics of one of his MOABs, Bacote and Kingwood...

Actually, I think this is his heavyweight... Would love to talk this one off of him!!! ;)
Thanks Jeff..... and yes that's my 80 pounder
I tried to talk Jim into making me one, but he just doesn't want to make any that heavy any longer... I can respect that... I guess I can live with my 68# and 71#...
If I ever decide to sell it you'll be the first one I'll call. :readit:
This old man has a 63# MOAB that I'll be shooting for a long time.
Having a Thunderstick built? I believe Jim Reynolds has retired and shut down his website.
Jim is retiring soon but is was still taking orders as of a few months ago. I ordered another MOAB in November. Not sure if he is still taking orders but if you want one, you should probably act quick.
I've wanted a MOAB for the longest time. I think they are great looking bows. The pair in that link that Terry "our Dear Leader" posted, are just incredible. I don't think I would've wanted that task and he pulled it off in spades! Just GORGEOUS bows.
I'd settle for a decent used one in any ole finish.
Good luck in your quest to get your MAG built OP

My check has been cashed. Its gonna be a long 2-3 month wait! If I get it before turkey season I will be so pumped.
I have a TSM in all bamboo, one of my smoothest shooters. Your going to love your new bow. Good luck. Mike.
Guess I'll insure my MOAB since it will triple in value !!!!!!!
OH Lord Have Mercy!! That is the most beautiful MOAB I have ever seen! I've wanted a MOAB for a while but never have had the chance to get one when I had the extra cash on hand.
The combination of woods in that MOAB is really something. I am gonna save a copy of that pic and if I ever have the opportunity to have a MOAB built for me, I am going to ask for something similar.
You know what they say, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"!
How about more pics of that beauty?
