Title: 2016 shed antler thread!
Post by: Tree Killer on January 14, 2016, 10:56:00 AM
Couldn't find a thread for the sheds, so I'll get it started. Found a few yesterday here in Oregon.

Love all the slag on the base of this heavy antler!

Awesome pics Tree Killer

Axious to get out myself but about a month early here.......

Do Blacktails have a concentrated winter area or are you covering a lot of ground to find them?

Blacktail sheds are not easy to come by, I have never found one just laying there in plain sight. Usually they are in some tangle of blackberry bushes or vine maple thicket. Several years ago in February I was hiking with my two Golden retrievers and they found three in one day. They were fresh sheds so apparently they could smell the blood. All three sheds were in a tangle or buried in leaves and I would never had seen them.  A week later we went back to the same area and they found the other side to a nice 4x4 we had found the week before. My two boys are gone now and I think of them every time I see those sheds !

Most don't, but there's some areas where bucks migrate out of the higher mountains for the winter.

Neighbor kid found these on a pond dam that I can look out and see from my kitchen window. The buck had to have spent the summer there. Funny the owner of the property told me several times to come on over and sit in a broke down tractor cab because there was a real nice buck there every morning. Guess this might be the nice buck. Sure dropped early.                                                                         (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0557.jpg) (http://s223.photobucket.com/user/bens5218/media/IMG_0557.jpg.html)

We had some rain and mildness last week that cleared the snow and I was going to go out, but lolly gagged and missed out. A foot of snow now, so will have to wait.
We had a nice buck rub in the yard at the end of November and his track is still around, so I'm hopeful.

I haven't got to hold them yet, if they were last years the squirrels and mice usually knaw on them pretty hard.

Maybe the buck was injured and shed early. We had a nice buck do that a few years ago. We found the buck with a wound but no rack.

Great finds everyone.,  I will be walking around in the rain tomorrow looking for rabbits.  I know none of the neighbors shot anything this year except a spike and one doe so I imagine all the bucks I saw all summer may be leaving presents.

They were dripping antlers very early in Ohio.  My uncle and brother found 3 sheds the week after Christmas.

I've put on a couple miles between the last 2 days and have come up empty but I was also looking for rabbits and squirrels...also came up empty lol.  The ice crust is awfully loud right now, no sneaking up on anything.

Jerry:

Bedding areas, fence crossings, trails with overhanging branches are just a few areas to look for.  Here in East Texas, the squirrels are normally eating the antlers before they drop.

Biggest secret to finding sheds is having a place to look for them where the deer shed! Bigger ones stand out pretty well. It's the smaller ones that are tough to spot!

Have a pretty decent size herd (well really two separate ones that mingle in the middle) here at work. They've been out in the fields every night for the past 3 weeks about 4-430ish when I head home. 2 weeks ago there were 3 6pt and a nice big 8pt....now all antlerless.  And another guy go a picture on a trail camera of a big buck that had just two big flat spots where his gear was (probably the reclusive 14pt nobody has seen in person).

I've had my dog out a couple times and went to all the bedding areas close by, nothing. I'm planning to go further out soon after a little melting with the projected 40°F days coming up this weekend.

My dog has never found a real shed, just all the planted ones I leave around.

I found one last weekend when I was checking trail cams. All of the rest of the bucks on camera still had both sides.

These threads amaze me - in 25 years of hunting I've never found a single shed.  My 8 year old, Mason, found one this year from a pretty 6 point.  Dang!!!!  Even my little man can find them!    :smileystooges:

I'll get a pic of him holding it and post it.

Been hunting and spending in the woods since the 60's and I have only found 3 sheds. 2 were chewed up pretty good the other one was a year old but a real slammer. Only one side but from a 150+ class buck, a real Adirondack classic.

I have found 3 single sheds in the past, and literally stepped on one of them walking down the deer trail looking for them    :biglaugh:

I used to think bedding areas were the key, but I find most of mine where the deer were up moving about.  Think the extra motion shakes a few loose.
Title: Re: 2016 shed antler thread!
Post by: jonsimoneau on January 28, 2016, 05:44:00 PM
Same with me Kenny. And I agree. They are most likely to move them while out moving around. I do better around feeding areas but I still find plenty in bedding areas. I've actually gotten to the point now where I don't look for them as much as I used to unless I have got all my scouting done for the spring. Scouting and shed hunting at the same time just doesn't work as well for me since I tend to move much faster when shed huntng. Scouting at a slow pace works better for me.
Title: Re: 2016 shed antler thread!
Post by: kennym on January 28, 2016, 05:59:00 PM
Yep and when scouting I spend a lot of time looking at prospective stand trees!! LOL

Actually luck seems to be my best way of finding them when I'm actually doing something else!

Had a neighbor and his daughter show me a rack (both sides) that they saw fall off. The were driving a back road here by us in a freezing rain. A buck came out of the grader ditch, crossed in front of their truck then went in the other ditch, jumped a fence and when he came down both sides of his rack fell off. He showed the two sides to me and they both swore it was true. I believe them.

You guys are lucky.  Here in Colorado the muleys don't start really dropping until the end of Febuary.  I usually find some good deer sheds, but it involves miles of hiking.  What I am really excited for is April when the elk start dropping.

IOne of the sheds I found yesterday was a gnarly antler, basically a big forked horn with a crabclaw.  Pretty sure I found an antler off this same buck two years ago, he was a big nasty 3x4 during the rut of 2013...and I found his 4pt side in February 2014.

Hey Jonathan!  I mostly just collect them. some of the more unique antlers get displayed in the house. Some of the small sheds with an eyeguard I use for making a combo wingbone/antler turkey call. I use the antler for the bell of the call.

Look in the thick stuff. In CT I find most of mine in dense vegetation along the edges of swamps.

Holy smokes!!!
It would take me five years of hard searching here in Ohio to find that many horns.
Awesome!!

You must have enough snow pack that the antlers stay on top???

Still carrying here.  I usually don't find many till March.  I have been out several times just walking the trails in the snow before it melts to see where I should be looking.

Yesterday I jumped a big mountain lion while out shed hunting. He was laying on an old growth stump and had probably been watching me for 5 minutes until I got to within 100 ft...then he baled off and disappeared over the hill.  Also found a few sheds!

Winter range, they come down out of the higher mountains in early November, seek out the doe's during the rut and winter there. They're already moving upslope as the snowline recedes with the warmer weather we've had lately.

I would say that 60 percent of the bucks around here are still carrying. But the competition for finding shed antlers is high. Ya gotta get out early and often to beat the other guys to them. Trespassing laws are completely disregarded during shed season.

40 degree temps are moving in and we have had just a little of the last foot of snow start to melt off.

I had this guy under me late in November. Glad my tag was filled. He is going to be a good one to keep an eye out for.

I need to find the other side before the squirrels do.

The color varies around here but I would say all of the ones I find are considerably lighter then the ones you are finding.

Iv shot and seen some with dark antlers in the fall but if they are on the ground for long it seams to bleach them out pretty quick.

I think it all has to do with what they rub on IMHO

AND another pile of sheds for you!!!!!
Whats your count up to for the year?

Still haven't found any sheds this year. However, a few weeks back the pup did lock up and spin 180° to dive under a bushy Pine and found this.

At first, I thought it was a dead deer or something by the color of the frame in the vegetation. Seems its been there at least a season, with the vegetation grown up around it (not piled up on it), and the fabric/straps faded a bit.

Not sure why someone would haul this thing all the way to the middle of 11 acres, to leave it under a nondescript pine among 100's of the same....literally in the middle of where all the deer hide and bed.

  :dunno:

All I found yesterday were old antlers. The brownies were in hiding or somebody else had already been in the area.

 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/treekiller/shed%20pics/Feb23oldies_zpsl3kms2ii.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/treekiller/media/shed%20pics/Feb23oldies_zpsl3kms2ii.jpg.html)

I've found this old antler about three times over the years, the critters must not have liked the taste of it?

 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/treekiller/shed%20pics/oldtimer_zpsordaabm2.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/treekiller/media/shed%20pics/oldtimer_zpsordaabm2.jpg.html)

Also found a winter killed buck. Lots of lions in the area, but pretty sure this buck wasn't a lion kill because the whole skeleton was intact and the nose hadn't been chewed off.

 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/treekiller/shed%20pics/winterkill2016_zpsjkazeqag.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/treekiller/media/shed%20pics/winterkill2016_zpsjkazeqag.jpg.html)

We aren't allowed to take skulls with antlers attached, so pics are all I brought home.
