Title: Black Hills bowfishing?
Post by: Steve H. on January 10, 2016, 01:26:00 AM
I'm anticipating spending some time in the Black Hills in the next few years. One thing I'm missing in Alaska is bowfishing, there is nearly none up here.

What is close at hand in the Black Hills area? I've shot a few small carp at Keyhole between Gillette and Sundance but researching what other water is out there!

DeSmet between Buffalo and Sheridan is a possibility. A bit away from the Black Hills but a good place to shoot carp is Pathfinder; I used to slay them on the Sweetwater arm of the reservoir.

Do I remember correctly.... can't you shoot salmon in one of those large Missouri R reservoirs up that way ?  Any major reservoir should have carp.

Good luck...

Thanks guys. Keyhole is the most awesome place I've ever bowfished, like "hnm" said, stalk along the cliffs. All the fish I saw were dinky, is that the norm?

I checked out DeSmet once and didn't see any fish in the couple spots I checked.

I have shot hundreds of carp at Wheatland #1, good-sized fish too but that is a ways away.

I bet Belle Fourche Reservoir would be good too?

Steve,
Belle Fourche is good, when you get close give me a shout and I will steer you in the right direction.  The boys and I make it up there a few times a year.

I live in Spearfish btw.

Angostora down by Hot Springs is good too.  Pretty sure you know someone down there.

May not be what you are looking for but have seen tons of 20 to +40-pound carp on Missouri River reservoirs in South Dakota. Everyone else wanted to walleye fish so did not get a chance to bowhunt. But saw a lot of BIG carp on Lake Sharpe and Oahe.
