My buddy Alan (Chisler on TradGang) finished his season last year with a compound in his hand. This past summer, he got bit by the bow building bug real bad.
After many hours in my shop over the summer, Alan put together something pretty special. And he proved it's effectiveness pretty quick once the season started this year.
Hope you enjoy the pictures while I brag him and his craftsmanship up a little.

The finished product is a 3-piece take-down longbow, Bocote limbs under clear glass with a Bocote riser. The bow finished up around 60" nock to nock and around 60# @ 28".

He used black and red glass for overlays on the riser and the limb tips.

For a little extra mojo, he topped the tips off with some authentic bison horn.

Congrats Alan! Hopefully this will inspire those of you who have been putting off building your own bow or those still using a compound as a "crutch". It can be done...

Excellent!
 Awesome!!
Congradulations. Hap
That's very cool  I hope to do the same very soon.
WHOLLY CR&^%*&%P! tHAT'S A NICE ONE....BUT IT'S BUILT BACKWARDS.(LEFTHAND)
very nice... great work...
Yes, it is built backwards but that southpaw sure knows how to use it!

Well...how about that. Cool tell him congrats and that now it's time to move UP to a selfbow :bigsmyl:
HA HA! He's already been working on that one Ferret! He finished a Dryad blank and built two selfbows from scratch, one from hickory and one from Chinese Elm. I'm gonna get a piece of osage in his hands next.
He's building more bows than me...I'm jealous!

Sounds like he's on the right tract ;)
When you coming over to Ohia?
I hunted Guernsey County on Sunday. I'll be there on Saturday if you want to come over. Or let me know what your schedule is like and we'll plan something a little further out...

I said it before but congrats to Alan and that's a good looking bow.
Heck my Dryad blank has been sitting here at floor tiller for months, so I am jealous too :) .
Brian headed to Wisconsin Saturday morning and be back on the 28th.
You coming over in November for the rut?
Coop..get that Dryad out and do some scraping man, it's not too late!
I had back surgery 5 weeks ago, that is the only reason that beautiful blank is still not finished (I also hurt my back maybe a month after I got it in March). As soon as I can start scraping I plan to be back at it.
Heck I got mine the same day as Alan, he emailed like a week later saying his was finished and wanted pictures of mine. He is motivated and I love seeing that enthusiasm.
You know it Mickey, I'll be there a LOT in November. We'll make plans when you get back. Good luck in Wisconsin!

Outstanding job on both counts!
That is a good looking bow. Way to go on the harvest.
Nice bow!! Good job on bow and doe!(and pic)
I learned how sweet it is to kill one with your own bow on Saturday (see the El Cheapo thread). It is definitely one of the biggest thrills around! Congrats to him and to you for your fine mentoring on building a "purty" stick.
Ahh crap Coop sorry to hear about your back. Hope the surgery went well. I've thrown my back out twice in recent years and have nothing but sympathy for people with real back problems. Get better soon.
Thanks Brian will do.
Great looking bow! Congrats Alan!
Thanks for posting my pictures Brian, and thanks for all the help! Can't wait for November in Ohio and can't wait to start on the next one. Sorry we got rained out this a.m.
Pretty bow- nice doe!!
Nice stick Chisler! And fine work to take that doe. Gotta love bow fever.
Congratulations on the taking of a beautiful deer. Excellent bow too. Jawge
Great harvest and bow. You should be very proud!
:bigsmyl:
Congrats, Alan and nice job. Nice to see a "southpaw success" story.
Frank
awesome! :clapper:
Great job. Nice bow
Great looking bow! I've got a question, how do y'all get those tip overlays feathered so smothly? It looks almost as if they are painted on and just vanish into the limb glass!
Congrats on the deer Allen. A bigger congrats on doing it with a bow you crafted yourself! CK
Great looking bow. Congrats on your first with it . I bet it won't be your last. :archer:
Well, Alan did it again, his second Ohio whitetail. He is pretty deadly with this new stick! Congrats Alan, way to go!

Razor, for the overlays, we use a small, fine file in a circular motion and once you have them the way you want, finish with various grits of sandpaper.

Hey.... GET OUT of Ohio... you're killing all our deer :scared:
I finally saw some decent bucks during daylight hours in Guernsey County last weekend. Found a few fresh scrapes and rubs before heading home on Sunday. I think the next week or two will be fun. I passed on two younger bucks at under 15 yards Saturday morning and I should have killed a doe Sunday evening...
My brother and nephew are heading back with me this weekend. As it stands now, we plan to hunt Sat, Sun & Mon. I don't have a camp on my place yet so we'll be staying at the Super 8 in Cambridge. We have room for you, let me know what day(s) you are coming. Or let's plan something for the following week/weekend...

Hard to believe how many does we can kill in Ohio this year :archer:

Impressive work!!
I'm home on a Sat a.m. in November - feelin' sorry for myself... was gonna try to post a picture of another Ohio doe on TradGang but Brian beat me to it. I can't say enough how much I enjoy that longbow - I hunted 7 days last week, and the warm, home-made, graceful longbow is a lot better company in the stand than that old, cold, heavy compound.
Much to my surprise, the buck activity never reallly took off last week. A few new, small scrapes, and a a few small bucks doing very little chasing. The warm afternoons through 11/5 didn't help. Congrats to you guys that are out there right now - you better stay in your stand all day. Enjoy!!
Congrats!
Brian, with the number of doe tags and the kill off from "Blue tongue" in the southern part of the state, it'll be interesting to see how it effects the numbers next year.
