Have had a head cold, sneezing, runny nose, you know how that works for hunting....
Thought I'd try it tonite, got on stand about 2 hours before dark in a fencerow where the deer cross to get to a beanfield.
Saw a bunch of wildlife, a couple gobblers, some rabbits and a squirrel or 2...... ;)
I had a wonderful night as well. Had a coyote run off 2 does that were working my direction. Then saw 15+ does working through a bottom about 75 yards away. They came bolting back towards me but not close enough. I figured that coyote had circled and spooked all of them too but nope! there were about 30 turkey's coming through along the creek making a TON of noise and pushed the deer back. Then right at dark I had a target buck of mine wind me. Wish I could've connected but it was a great night non the less.
:coffee:
I watched the 2 gobbler for some time before the first doe came into sight right there with them.
I'm in the corner of my little farm about 40 yards from the cornerpost to the north with my back to the fence. Ladder stand in a scraggly locust but I have a bunch of pin oak limbs complete with leaves woven in around the stand. It will soon be tested.....

:campfire:
The first doe comes west along the south fence to an old Osage tree, there she hangs out on the other side where I can't see her for quite a while. Then 4 more does come across the snowy bean field straight from the south. They are intent on some standing beans on my place....
And????
Come on Paul Harvey, where's the rest of the story?
The sun has now slid down past the horizon, the gobblers have headed south to the bigger timber to roost, and still the other 4 come. They head towards the doe under the old Osage tree and she comes out a bit to meet them. She is met with some front feet kicks and jabs from the biggest doe. This forces her to jump the fence onto my place about 50 yds east of the corner of the place. Well thinks I ,I'll get to watch em all cut thru the switchgrass to the beans 50 yards out.....
The lone doe instead comes around the field edge. Hmmm , I best stand up and get ready. She comes along my edge and the other 4 come thru the corner gate behind her.
Its now about 32 degrees and the wind is still 10 mph from the wsw. My new Christmas cabelas wool with windstop from my wife, along with the windstop vest my bud Steve Grice gave me is keeping me quite comfy tho.
Keep it coming.
Ok your warm and comfy . What about the deer.?
:campfire: :coffee:
Oh yeah, the deer. I was real happy just bein comfy! :D
The doe who got kicked and jumped the fence has now come around the edge and is going to be downwind of me pretty quick, so I decide to shoot her if she stops on her own. She is out in the switchgrass and big bluestem CRP grass a little.
She is now about 18 yards straight East of me, soon to be dangerously close to downwind. I had dropped some milkweed fluff earlier and it went out a hundred yards before sinking to deer nose level but the nose knows if you know what I mean.
She comes into a couple bare spots in the tall grass, right on thru the first while I'm at full draw, stops in the next one, arrow is gone and looks good. She is straight ahead and low and fast thru the tall grass. Watched her and tried to mark last place I saw her. Listening is out of the question as 3 of the other 4 run behind her.
The last doe (kickboxer) is still standing in the corner of the field. Now she starts down the edge , coming along at about 15 yards out. OK then, I get another arrow on the string.
Remember when I said the pin oak limb brush I put in the tree was gonna get tested? This is the 5th deer coming along here now tonite and none have even looked up here.
She closes to straight out in front of me seemingly calm. I draw ,anchor and it's gone. With some kind of Matrix move, the arrow catches her in the neck and she is down kicking. The next one she doesn't dodge and soon she is still.

Now I go look for the other one, the blood is sparse and she soon cuts out across a beanfield.
I go home and eat and summon some help, when they arrive we go back to look.
Its been 2 hours and figuring she won't bed in the bean field, we go to the top of the hill and shine the light down her tracks. Not in the field and still sparse blood, so we will look in the morning, hope the yotes don't beat us there.
We go back and dress the big doe, here is a knife my bud Mike Baker made me and the bow I built last spring. That's the 2nd arrow, she broke the first when she fell.

To be continued tomorrow....
I'll check back then :campfire: :coffee:
Will for sure check back ,good luck finding the other one . Good shooting.
Oh sure just drag it out! What do you think this is? :D
Did you ever switch your broadheads?
Congrats Kenny! Good luck finding the second in the a.m.
I'll be watching for your post in the morning!
Good pics and story! Congratulations on the 2nd doe... gotta love short track jobs!
God bless,
Rodd
Congrats brother!!
Congrats!
Awesome
Congratulations Kenny! Good luck this morning. That snow aught to help with tracking.
Congrats Kenny!
Check back after church, best wishes Kenny and congrats! Kickboxer went down down with one punch.
Sounds like a really fun time in an area with lots of game.
Well, the rest of the story is not so much, we found her this morning, but the yotes had been there before us. Not good, no pics, didn't take the camera with.
On the way along the blood trail in the cedar patch, I was walking off to the side and bro was slightly off to the other of the trail. Suddenly he kind of hops onelegged and stops. The arrow had come out of the deer and was laying on a gooseberry bush at an angle and hit him in the shin with the VPA 3 blade. Fortunately it centered the shin bone and only went in about a half inch. Bled profusely for a minute, I was near panic as he takes blood thinners. Once we got the long johns pulled up , it only bled one more drop, Thank God.
We found what was left of the deer and decided the yotes could finish what they started. Got him back to the house and cleaned the cut the best we could, very tender from hitting the bone. He is going to the urgent care to let them look at it. Not bleeding now but a little swelled where we left the cuff of his long johns on it for compression.
Some things relearned :
Use bright fletchings so you can tell where that arrow goes in dim light.
If you can't find the arrow after the shot,be damn careful walking the blood trail.
If you have lots of yotes, may possibly be better to push on instead of waiting til morning(hard call I know).
Go slow on the blood trail even if it's an easy one(like on snow)
Thanks for sharing. Congrats. Good lesson.

Hey Kenny, hope your bro is alright.
Thanks for taking us along, enjoyed the read. Now, maybe it's time to start calling in some coyotes!
Congrats Kenny..Sounds like an adventure...
Congratulations on the late season doe! That accident with your brother could have been very bad; I'm glad he's doing OK. Those dang coyotes are all over.
Bernie
Great story! Congrats on the deer!
Sorry bout your bro! I've heard of that exact thing happening before. And sorry but the other deer. I've seen more dang yotes this year than ever before. Matter of fact I'm sitting in my stand now and had one pass by out of range trailing a small 8 point about an hour ago!
Congrats. It does not take coyotes long to find a blood trail if they are around!
Congrats on the two-fer!
Sorry the yotes beat you to the one, but you can't really blame them, as they were just doing what yotes do!
Bisch
Congratulations Kenny! Sounds like a great evening indeed! Didn't take you long to put that knife to use! Hope it served you well! Mike
Congratulations Kenny.
I've lost deer to coyotes as well.... this year I made the command decision to follow up 2 hours after the shot and was rewarded with my best buck via archery to date.....
It is a tough call....
God bless,
Rodd
Congratulations Ken.
Great hunt Kenny. Congrats on the double, sorry the yotes got there first.
Joe
Kenny, well done my friend. Glad your brother is OK
Awesome story! Really enjoy these late season thread posts! I usually look forward to late season hunting myself but a out of the blue triple bypass surgery has me sitting on the side lines this year and looking forward to the "still hunting posts"!
Thanks all, really wish I'd went back 4 hours later last nite.
Bro ended up going to the ER because by the time he got home it was bleeding again, running down his ankle. The puncture was just below his knee .
X-rays, stiches, has to get 3 antibiotic shots and an rx of some more. Be careful out there! Like he said, "what are the chances of that happening!"
Congrats on the double Kenny,
Glad your brother is alright. Don't you just love late season hunting! November rut hunting is hard to beat but late season cold and snow are a real close second place for me.
Hey Richard, great to see you posting! Cold is good, between food and bed is the place to be!
Congrats Kenny! Great story and hunt. Sorry to hear the coyotes claimed one of them, but they are pretty thick out there this year.
Hope your brother heals quickly and doesn't have any complications.
Wish we had that snow when we were there.....maybe next season?
Kenny, I do more browsing then posting until this time of year rolls around. Spend most of my days at work in front of a computer, shy away from it when I get home. But once deer season starts, I like to keep track on how everyone is doing and read the stories. Always something to learn on here.
Wow. Just left your house at 11:00am yesterday and you start killing the deer herd off. Congrats and thanks for a great time. Chad
Hi Mac! Snow is great but snow with a couple inches of sleet and rain under, not quite so good. Very noisy and also slick! Chad can vouch for that! Chad, I just got lucky!
Kenny, Glad your Brother will be OK. sorry you fed the coyotes but they are just trying to live.
Congrats again on the Big Doe.
Good story, Kenny! Hate to hear about John's calamity and losing a deer, though.
Come visit me at the UBM Festival in February!
Darren
Well that stinks buddy, both the deer and especially brother John!
Glad he's gonna be ok....it's amazing the crazy things that "happen" while hunting :scared:
Yep the yotes are just doing their job and they are good at it too!
Darren , where can I find the info on the ubm?
Curt, a little update on bro , he took a broadhead for Dr to look at, they thought about an inch in, and alongside the shin bone. Did xrays to make sure no bone damage, can cause bone infection. Guess you really don't want that!!
Says it is pretty sore still, last burning antibiotic shot today, then a week of pills.
Hoping he doesn't get some kind of infection that shows up again!
Dang fone,dbl post
Wow how did I miss this Congrats sir I shot a nice Bow today again I just need to get in the woods with it
Thx T !!
Sounds like a nice place to hunt!
Great night of hunting !!! Hopefully your brother is ok. Sorry to hear about the coyotes. Thanks for sharing.
