Well, I finally have some down time from work and family to upload some photos and post about a buck I shot back on November 7th. I wish I had a great story about how he was chasing a hot doe or how I called him in using my expert deer calling skills…lol. The reality is, I was hunting a patch of oaks were the deer tend to feed before and after they bed down. I had gotten to my stand well before daylight and had only seen a few does and one small buck up until around 9am when this big guy came strolling in to munch on some acorns about 15 yards in front of me. I thought maybe a mule deer had mistakenly found its way to this little piece of property! I had never seen this deer before and just couldn’t believe that it actually just walked out in broad daylight to get a late morning snack. He stood there head on facing me for what was probably only five minutes, but seemed like an eternity. At one point, I thought about digging my phone out of my pocket to snap a pic…If this guy decided to run off before I could shoot, no one would ever believe me. I didn’t get the chance as he finally turned broadside and I sent my arrow on its way. Things happened kinda quickly and I was a bit nervous when I took the shot. I hit him a bit back in what I thought was the liver area. The majority of the arrow hanging out the opposite side as he ran off. I could see him stop about a hundred or so yards away in some thick brush…he just stood there for a bit and then I just didn’t see him anymore. No crashing or any signs that he had died? Well, I waited about an hour and called a guy I know who owns a tracking dog and he advised me to wait at least 10 hours and that he would meet me just after dark to follow up on the buck. Let me tell you…That was a LONG day! We headed back around 8pm and the little dog took right to the trail. Within about 20yards of the trail there was blood all over the place. Turns out he had laid down right where I had last seen him and never got back up. I guess it just goes to show you that if you’re not sure of the shot, waiting is absolutely the only choice! If I would have gone after him sooner, odds are I would have just pushed him out of the area.
Anyway, I consider myself to be incredibly lucky and I guess in the right place at the right time. I’ve hunted enough to know that old mature bucks like this don’t make too many mistakes. This is also the first deer I’ve taken in five years and will likely be the largest six point I’ll ever see in my lifetime! I was using a homemade recurve 52” and 55#. Gold tip Arrow and Abowyer broadhead.

That's the biggest 6pt I've ever seen!!! Wow

He was 18.5" inside and 22" outside. 195 pounds dressed. I rough scored him at about 120"ish. But I've never measured a deer in my life. I'll have it scored after the 60 days. The Michigan record for a six point is 133.5" (or so I was told).

Awesome 6 point!
Miss seeing you around here kid!
-
I need to get back out there and climb some more mountains...I'm getting out of shape! :)
-
Very nice buck indeed. Congrats. If he bedded 20 or so yards from where you shot/last saw him, he was probably hit very hard though. A half hour, hour wait would likely have still found him piled up right where you did. Regardless, probably better to err on the side of caution. Well done.
-
Well, Good on you, you did it all perfectly, deadly shot, took advice to wait and did it with a homemade bow. That is a lifetime Buck...
-
That's the biggest 6 point I've ever seen!

I shot one years ago that scored around 108". Your is considerably bigger. Did you measure four circumferences ? You get four of those measurements wether its a 2x2 or 8x8.
(former p&y measurer)

Beautiful Buck looks like he had survived successfully for several years. Congratulations on your success. Definitely a wall mount. Hope that your season is still open and you get another buck. Was it taken during the Rut?
