Title: suggested arrow weight
Post by: johandre on December 24, 2015, 09:23:00 AM
hi guys just want to see what hunting arrow weight everyone uses for longbows of 40-45lb.

and what you use to make your arrows heavier.

My bow is closer to 50#, and my arrows are just a tad over 10 grains per pound of draw weight (gpp). If I had a 45# bow, I would work up an arrow in the 10-11gpp range also, and maybe just a tad heavier than that if I had a 40# bow.

I shoot a 46 pound toelke whip and have great arrow flight and a SUPER quiet bow using a 28.5" gold tip .600 with a 50 grain insert and 200 grain head. They came out to around 500 grains which is heavier than 10gpp but I'm fine with it.  They hit with authority.  Use the same arrow out of my buffalo but with 175 grain head.

I agree with Bisch.  You CAN use a wide range of weights and get away with it, but.....many bows really quiet down with heavier arrows ( meaning, to me, that they are transferring their stored energy more completely) and realistically, shooting at 20 yards there is very little difference in trajectory.

Besides, if you learn one thing (trajectory), how is that better than learning the other thing (other trajectory) ?

I'm just getting back into shooting a lot and am shooting the same weight you are. My arrows are Surewood Shaft Douglas Fir shafts with 150 grain heads. Total arrow weight is a bit under 500 grains. They shoot really well for me.

thanks guys my arrows dont weigh near 450-500 grains. brass inserts are not that widely available here and also no field points heavier than 125gr to tune my 600 spines with should i use weight tubes in the arrow? broadheads i can get in following sizes 100,125,150,165 and 200gr. any sugestions?

I just bought a 45lb long bow off here. The rest of mine are all 53-55. TO start with I built a set of 500 warrior shafts full length with 100 gr brass inserts and 145 gr heads. Shoots REALLY well for me.

They came out at 498.

I can add weight to the head and still get good flight IMO. They are quiet too.

The range could be dependent on the game you anticipate to be pursuing.

For me, shooting 45#, 10.5gpp seems ideal. Lower i've gone is 10, heaviest I like is 11... don't care for the trajectory if any heavier.

So, like Bisch and others have said.

What Bisch said; 10-11 for me, 10.5 seems ideal when I can get it.

I shoot about 500 to a little over 600 grain arrows out of my 45-50# bows.  Like to keep my gpp around 12.  To achieve the heavier weight, I use brass inserts, steel adaptors and different weight heads on Easton Axis shafts, or different weight heads on Sweetland Forgewood wood shafts.
