Title: Question on Blacktail grips
Post by: kat on December 22, 2015, 11:50:00 AM
I have a question on a Blacktail grip.
Can anyone tell me about the medium grip on say an Elite VL. I would guess that the Snakebit etc. would all have the same grip.
I ask because of the way I grip a recurve.
On Schafers, and widows, I have no problem, but on Bob Lees, and Palmers, the joint of my thumb (near the web of my hand) is cramped for space.
This rubs the joint raw.
Nothing wrong with the bows I have mentioned; just the way I grip them.
I have tried to modify my hand placement, but prefer it the way it is.
So after all that, has anyone else experienced this?
How is the grip  on Norm's recurves as compared to the bows I have mentioned above?
Thanks,
Ken

Ken, I have a Bob Lee, and several Blacktails, Elite VL, Snakebit and the Sitka, but no experience with a Palmer.  My thumb joint is thick and I have the same issue with the Bob Lee grip that you do, but not with any of the grips on the Blacktails.  I have owned four customs and three used and the grips all felt the same.  I have never shot a Schafer, but I liked the Black Widow, it just that I like the Blacktail more. Hope this helps.

Ken...give Norm a call and talk to him.  He'll work with you and likely modify a grip if need be. Have a hunting story or two ready.     :campfire:

I think the Blacktail grips are more narrow than Schafers.  I prefer the Tip grip.

I had a Snakebit one piece. The grip filled my palm a little more than my widow. Not too bad though. I prefered the narrow grip though.

Ken,  I have absolutely nothing to add, just replying to bump it up.

Also to say I would love to see your blacktail bow if you choose to order one.

I put in a call to Alan Pope. Very nice man to deal with.

Thanks for the replies. They helped in my decision.

I am getting the medium grip modified some, and now the wait begins.

Charlie-
You need to start shooting left handed, so you can try it out when it gets here.    :goldtooth:

Allan is great to work with.  He refinished my bow with their new satin finish in stead of high gloss.  I much prefer it.

My Tall Tines have more room in the grip area than my Blacktail.  Not bad in any way just different.  I am sure Norm  would create a bow that you would be very satisfied with.  I love my Blacktail.
