Title: What is a good longbow for an ILF, DAS shooter?
Post by: Cody Greenwood on December 21, 2015, 08:34:00 PM
Hello all, I have shot archery most of my life, I mainly shoot ILF, DAS and the occasional arrow out of an old Bear or my High Sierra.

This week a guy at the office gave me a dozen wood arrows. This has triggered a crazy desire to get a longbow. What  suggestions would you folks have that would allow me a easy transition back and forth between my metal risers and the long bow?

I will not be competing with this bow, it will be a backyard shooter and I would like to use it for ground hunting. I need it to be efficient, I keep the draw down around 41 to 45lbs. I would like a takedown. I have been looking at a PL and I will be shooting everything at the Kzoo show. Any brands or models that stand above the rest? I don't mind paying and waiting for quality. I don't know if it matters I was planning to shoot three under with this set up.

Besides shooting my Centaur ILF, I enjoy shooting my one piece. Can't go wrong with Jim's work.

What kind of longbow are you looking at. ASL, mild or aggressive hybrid, selfbow?

If you want performance than an aggressive hybrid would fit the bill. Love my Bigfoot Sasquatch hybrid, or if you want longer his flatliner will launch a quick arrow. His G10 ibeam will add extra mass your used to in metal risers. Lots of followers on the Reynolds moab, Toelke whip and many others.

My suggestion would be A&H ACS CX 3PC. There are several riser choices to choose from. As far as the limb design and arrow speed goes, their bows are among the fastest made today. Check out their website and do a little reading about their bows.

It's hard for me to like a longbow grip, very different from the grips recurves have, so if you like a recurve grip, my suggestion would be to take a look at Dryad bows.

Sounds like you would like something with more mass weight in the riser and possiby cut to center. So it would be more lke your ILF bows.

Maybe a Fox Triple Crown.

Or possibly a Toelke HS longbow with a phenolic riser and bow bolt T.D.
That would give you some good mass weight in the Toelke with its longer riser. It also has a few grip options. The standard and the Classic grip.
I think the standard grip would be more your style.

Anywys I think the Toelke would be a good  one to consider. Its very fast,no handshock, very well made, and a stable shooter.A custom would be made for you in a short amount of time as well if that's important to you.It would run around 1000$ with the options I listed.

The Flatliner mentioned above would be a prospect.
as well.

Their are other options in ths 1 and 2 PC category tht have more mass and can be cut to center or past center probably.Like Stotler.

I would shop the Sponsers links on Tradgng for idea's.

If you were looking at a 3 PC T,D longbow.I think thier are alot of options a far as bowyers that would fit the bll as far as being similar to your ILF rig.Ofcouse you could get some ILF longbow limbs if you were looking for a 3 PC.Like Centaur

I think your looking for a 1 PC or 2 PC though.

A bow like a WES Wallce Royal with the 2 PC brass and steel sleeve is a sleek 2 PC.That has the streamlined Longbow look. But has the mass weight from the T.D system he uses.Fox Traditional longbow also use this T.D system.

They would be heavier than the Widow you mentioned by a bit. That has the locket socket design.THe locket socket is excellant though.Strong, precise and durable.

I bought a used Omega Delta made by Kegan McCabe in Western PA. A very fast and smooth shooting 3 piece longbow for a very reasonable price. It shoots better than the high dollar bows I've tried. I think he charges around $455 for one and $355 for the one piece.

Thanks for the information, I will look for some of these at Kzoo this year. It sounds like it's going to come down to the grip of the bow.
