Wife just gave me permission to spend 9 bills on a new bow. My problem is lack of patience. What should I get?.RC
-
I don't think I would need that much, but if you can... why not?
-
I just ordered a Rose Oak Custom Recurve - Puma Hunter. Wait time is 1-2 months. You could easily spend the 9 bills on one of his fancy bows or go with a cheaper model and still have a great looking bow (just going on pictures posted on Tradgang and on his web-site). From everything I've read he makes a great looking and shooting Recurve.
I'd be sure to spend anything left over on the wife, sounds like she's a keeper;)

I really like the looks of those Rose Oak Creations bows, Robert.
Check them out- they are sponsors here now and he is having a sale on the Sponsor's Classifieds on some bows already made..don't think you will have to spend all that money either to get a great one with his 15% off deal.

Happy Christmas.

If you "gotta" spend $900 on one bow buy a Black Widow. Or does (lack of patience) mean you would rather not wait eight to ten weeks for a bow?
If that is the case there are lots of other bows priced about $450-$500 that are great for the money! Why not go that way and get two? Bet ya they are in stock now... :) ...
-
recurve's I like ...BW, Acadian Woods, Brack, Trails End ( by Dale Dye), Lewis Hollow,Rick Welch dakota, not the purtiest :) but maybe the best shooter I have shot, Fedora might be one to consider, heck dont ask me , LOL...I love em all...Im so confused!!! :scared:
-
a used one. no wait time and for that amount of $ you could buy 2.

3 Rivers Dalaa with the E Adapter and B SRF sight. I replaced the velcro that comes on the bump rest and side plate with seal skin. It is the most accurate shooting bow I've ever owned.

don't overlook Robertson Stykbows....and he some beauties in stock w/a try before you buy program!

good luck "bow" hunting! Mike
-
You dont have to wait nine or ten weeks sometimes. I called and checked with them and they had what i wanted coming off the line with no owner. So I snatched up the little PSR and got it in about 2 weeks
-
Ricky Welch can usually build one in under 3 months. Right now, I'm shooting one of his bows better than any bow I've ever owned.
-
Robert, I just bought a used Kempf Kwyk Styk that was like new, I still marvel at how smooth it is to draw, and it's quick and quiet to boot. To quote the words of my friend Guru when I was looking,
"Don't rule out the Kwyk Styk bud.Jack has a great line-up of bows.Longbows,recurves,T/D'd and one pc.'s"
I didn't, and I haven't been disappointed.

Save the money untill you can shoot a few and see what you like.

Hello RC, hope things are well with you. How've you been hittin those hogs this year?? It's been a couple of years but Dan and I would still like another shot at those critters.
James is right. Best advice is always to shoot before you buy. I would wait until the Spring and go to a couple of the bigger Trad shoots. I want to buy it right off the table after I shoot it. I don't even want a bowyer to "build another just like it." ...Dave
-
Hatrick, Glad to hear from you! I did kill 7 pigs at Horsecreek this year. You are welcome to join me any time. I have camped for a week the last week of October or the first of Nov. for five years now and plan on next year God willing. You and Dan are welcome to come down.
-
Robert,I like the looks of that recurve you made a couple of years ago ! You shot it as good as any of those bows named above. If you have to have one made by someone else, take a look at the Shrew Scout recurve or drop me a line and I will let ya shoot mine the next time We are at Paradise.Tom
-
RC = "shoot a few and see what you like." The first time I met Robert, he was working his way through a crowd of trad shooters at the Paradise Club, shooting every bow that he could. He shot my bow better than I do. That boy loves to shoot, as many hogs have painfully learned!
Robert, my buddy from PA sure loves his Morrison recurve - such a sweet and fast shooter!
-
I sure like my Zippers. The wait time isn't bad either.
-
Widow or Brack. Or save the money and go on some kind of hunt!!!!
-
Boy...surprised no one has mentioned the Border Black Douglas and the fact that Border has a list of bows ready for immediate sale on their site now.
Sid is also fantastic at answering any questions you might have...
-
Buy a Rivers Edge recurve and longbow w/ your 9 bills. Performance and craftsmanship is as good if not better than some of the more well known bows.
-
Lots of good nearly new bows in the classifieds. Look for a Silvertip or a Brack Quest.
-
Morrison
-
Sovereign Archery's Trident or Ballistic. Excellant bows.
-
I'll go with the first few guys that mentioned the Rose Oak bows. They are a really sweet shooting bow and faster than most of the other bows mentioned if you go with the Wildcat t/d. It is the fastest and smoothest bow I've shot. The best part is that you could get the bow in a month or two and with all the options (wavy veneers, pierce points, any wood combo you want). No need to spend $900 for one of the all actionwood, noisy, spider bows. Mike

Decide what exactly you want for qualities in your bow. Figure out was is the most important thing to you and the next and so on. There are very few bad bows anymore and most of the decision truly comes down to how any particular bow fits you and your style. I've held big $$$ bows that the grip just completely turned me off to and cheap ones with great grips. There is no wrong answer to this question, so do some research, shoot some bows and figure out your priorities. have fun with every bit of the shopping.
-
9 bills!?!?!?!??!?! if my wife told me that i would have to take her to the doctor
-
RC,
When this question comes up, and it always comes up...I always recommend you try to find a local bowyer to work with. As some have mentioned, the differences between bows aren't that great, and working with a local guy, you can get the grip the exact way you want it.
I currently have 14 trad bows, 13 of which are custom, and I have two more ordered.
I bought a Rose Oak bow because Brandon is local and I saw that he does things (cosmetically) that I had never seen before, like the wave design in the limbs and the crazy wave in the riser.
I wanted a "show off" bow I could take to 3D shoots.
After I got it home and shot it a few times, I realized the bow shot so well I needed one for hunting, and the one he made was too purdy (and shiny) to hunt with. So I have ordered another. BTW, the workmanship is of a truely anal artist that took his time and got every aspect PERFECT.
The Rose Oak bows shoot well for me because they are cut past center and thus are EXTREMELY tolerant of arrow spine. They are smooth drawing, quiet and very fast as well.
Anyway, there are GREAT bowyers all over the country and if you can find one near you, you will support your local economy and have access to him for a custom grip for YOUR hand.
If you don't have one near you, I can whole heartedly recomend Rose Oak Bows.
-
I agree shoot as many as you can before you decide one guys trash is anothers treasure, oh there is Das on ebay that has never been shot and you could pick it up.....

I agree with the advice of shooting a few before you buy. I would definitely look at Habu, Hoyt Gamemaster, Marriah Thermal, and River's Edge. If you're looking at black widow,I would strongly suggest shooting the Habu as well. I found the Habu feels, shoots, and performs better than the widow, although both are excellent choices.

Rose Oak for a wooden bow period
-
Them Rose Oak bows is just too purty...wonder if he can make me one and make it look mean...black dymond wood, black glass, some phenolic barbed wire accents...leave some tool marks on it...couple unsanded patches...lol...
I have to say Brandon, your 'curves are without a doubt as stunning as I've ever seen...including Blacktail...
-
Now that you are armed with all of these wonderful suggestions and KNOW EXACTLY WHICH BOW YOU WANT you can order it and go crazy waiting for it to show up.
Been there done that .
Good luck.
John
-
Thanks guys. I`m thinking on a Widow but then theres them Bracks and Robertson has some sweet recurves and them Rose Oak bows are shore purty and...AAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH.
-
RC, if ya cannot wait a Robertson stock bow is the way to go. Those Rose Oak are pretty but pretty does not make a great bow. I really would like to try one to give advice on one. I have owned Robertsons and I am sorry I still don't and if ya want a Widow, the only one to buy is the TF, it outperforms there other bows as far a shootability. Shawn

Blacktail by Norm Johnson
-
Buy the best,forget the rest.
DAS.
-
If you just buy one we suggest, it will probably be on Ebay in a few months. Shoot a few and be patient.
-
Called Black Widow second week of October and they had a PTF-III coming off the line with no owner...received it three weeks later. My first Black Widow, a great shooting bow. They had several other bows with no owners at that time. It would be worth your time to call and ask...
-
Good Lord, RC with a new bow? There won't be any game left in Georgia!
Robert, you are more than a good enough shot to be able to tell what bow works best for you. As others have said, I'd hate for you to spend all that money on something that may not be what you want. I suggest the patience route Mr. Stout mentioned, shoot everything you can until you find one you like.
Now, when you coming up to try out what I got?
-
the PTF II or III or Black douglas Border hex IV
-
Border Swift with the new Hex V limbs.
-
depends on what youre into but I'm going back to Black widow myself... another awesome recurve and one of the best deals aound is the Pittsley Preditor's.. www.huntersniche.com (http://www.huntersniche.com)
but I just ordered the BW PSA2 with diamond backs because I don't care to wait even 4 months I'll have mine in september.
or go to Denton hill this weekend and find the one YOU like..
-
Check out the Assenhiemer line of bows. You can get a beautiful good shooting bow and have money left over.
-
:wavey:
hawgslayer, aka....Ray
-
George Stout has some good advice. You really need to shoot something but if you asked me ....
Sovereign Ballistik, smoothest draw and hard shooting. $900 would get you one of those fancy smancy purty ones.
The new Ancient Spirits Thunderhawk SLM, I have a 64" 1 pc that's 58@28 that I shoot as good as any bow I have ever owned and it smokes an arrow and quiet as a mouse.
-
If you want the best shooting recurve get a DAS.A lot of folks go through a lot of bows to find one that fits them and their style. If you take the time the DAS can be modified to fit anyone. You can make it short or long.It can be set up to perform with a long or short draw.If you want to shoot split or three under change the tiller. If you don't like the grip change it or get the blank and make your own.
Having said all that if you just don't like metal get the Widow.
-
Bob Morrison has many risers in stock. Very nice. It would cut the wait down and it is a great bow.
