What's your hunting plans?
« on: August 17, 2011, 05:23:00 PM »
Well Brad R. is up north chasing Caribou.

Hopefully TreeKiller has a plan for one of those great blacktail bucks he showed off recently in pictures.

I'm heading to Utah on the 30th to live amongst the elk.

What are your plans this year?

Well headed to Baker in the morning to chase elk with a smoke pole. First time in 25 years I will not be hunting elk with a bow. Kinda freaky, but my dad is getting tried (secret word for getting old lol)of chasen them so thought we would try something new.
So where in Utah are ya headed? A open bull unit or did ya draw a big bull tag. I lived in Drapery Ut for 5 years and still go chase elk there with my brother every couple of years. Any ways good luck on your hunt. Lots of elk in that country.

Not anything special this year.  I didn't draw any tags (but got some points).  Have not been able to practice much.  Also my nephew is getting married up in Washington on opening weekend and have a commitment in the middle of September.  Nothing extended I am sure, just a day here and a morning or evening there.

I thought about heading up into the Metolius unit to a place I know, looking for Mule deer, and perhaps a bit of coastal deer and perhaps elk hunting (although I think that is a game for those younger and with more energy than me).  Am actually looking forward to the late season this year, as I will be spending a lot of time in the Stott Mountain and Alsea areas, so I might be able to slip away for a quick hunt here and there.

Shawn, I drew a Manti LE tag after 8yrs of trying. Going to be able to stop in a visit a buddy that just moved to Orem coming back. Should be a great time.

Ron, I've spent a lot of time in the Metolius unit over the years. That burn kind of changed things for me. I've been meaning to take a walk up in there and see how it is doing. Hope you find a Rosey over at the coast.

Hey Snag, I know that unit well. Killed a bunch of elk there. 2 years ago my brother drew the LE bull tag for Manti lots of nice bulls there. I went there and bugled for him that year. He never connected with one. He was after a 350 bull or better. The first year I lived in Utah I called 17 bulls in 9 days around Marys nipple. One of them was a 387 bull got him at 18 yards screaming his head off on video. All we had was cow or spike tag. Man what a bummer let me tell ya. My brother will be down there like the last 12 days  season.
Have you hunted there before or know someone that has? If not pm me your number and I we can talk little. I'm in baker city now chasen cows but I cam check out the site on my phone.

Hi Shawn, haven't ever been to Utah period! But I have been given a lot of advice and help on where to hunt in the unit. Love to talk with you. I'll pm you my number. Look forward to talking with you.

Probably just hunt around Mt Hood the first week. Going to hang a treestand Monday near a spring with lots of elk sign.

Been trying to get my toe into some private property in the Fossil unit, but still waiting on that.

Might go over to John Day after Labor Day and hit my old stompin' grounds.

Friend and I are going somewhere east the third week, depends on whether that private property pans out. Just somewhere with more elk than Mt Hood and less rhody brush.

The final week a friend and his wife invited me to join them west of Granite. They hunt from a treestand, but it's close to the N.F.J.D.Wilderness, so I might do some exploring.

I'm on a powerful blood thinner, so sharp objects like knives and broadheads could be hazardous to my health! Kind of have to hunt with a partner this year for safety sake.

Haven't decided if I'll buy a deer bow tag or not? Usually save my deer tag for the late blacktail hunt, but not sure if I can get my bow drawn in cold weather this year. Takes at least three pulls in 70* to get my bow fully drawn.

BTW...Brad shot a little caribou yesterday. He sent me several text messages and pics last night.

Ron seems like I gravitate to the east anymore now too. Guess as I get older I don't look forward to fighting the rhodies and vine maples as much as I use to.
Hope you can work your charm on the private land owner and gain access to your hunting grounds. Good luck.

Brad, I loaded up the truck this morning, had to come into work for half a day, by noon today I AM GONE! I'll join up with my hunting partner at his home in Burns. Then off the Utah for 16 days! I've never taken off even 2 wks. in a row...my wife mentioned that this morning...hmmm, I do believe there is payback in my near future! haha

I keep checking to see if he's back yet!  He was supposed to visit Oregon Okie (who is living in Utah now) while down there, so maybe he will send something and not keep us in suspense.
