I'm a bit confused. I will read here and there that we need the hog hunting regulations changed. What is it that is being needed? Hogs can be hunted year round on private land with any weapon, day or night.

Public land is an entirely different issue. Can anyone clarify?

Hours/Season: Landowners and leaseholders may hunt nuisance animals year-round at any time of day or night with no weapon/caliber restrictions on property titled in their name or otherwise owned, or leased by them.

From what I read folks are wanting to hunt them year round on public land also but I don’t see that happening anytime soon if at all.

From what I understand, on state management areas you can't hunt squirrel's with broadhead. So therefore you can't go hog hunting during squirrel only season on state management areas.

What most guys are doing during turkey season is actually hog hunting because they can legally have broadheads and hogs can be harvested during any open game season, except squirrel because it's illegal to have broadheads.

Matt is correct. On a state or federal WMA, hunting small game with a bow and arrow that incorporates any point except a blunt is illegal.

On State WMA and federal, you can only hunt hogs with the legal weapon IN season.

Basically, bow hunters are shut out of public land hog hunting in the month of Feb.unless they want to shoot a hog with a blunt.

My issue is the State publishes that we have a hog problem and they should be shot on sight.

But then tie the hands of hunters (mainly bow hunters) through regulations that prevent their elimination.

The main reason given if you ask a Wildlife Officer, and I’m not bashing as I have the upmost regard for the law and those who enforce them

I for one would pay a small fee to hunt a little longer. And I don’t believe that a change of this nature would cause excessive pressure in a lot more people in the woods after hogs.

I believe it would be only a few dye in the wool hunters as ourselves.

Most hunters today as we know are limited on time and hunt only a few days a year if that.

They want quick results and something on the ground to justify the hunt. Once that’s satisfied their home back in the easy chair drinking their ☕️.

Bud has written a well thought out letter to the DNR and is similar to my thoughts.

Has there been any changes to status?

Also any movement with a group hunt? I haven't been to the MS trad site probably should check it.

I hope they get that changed but in all honesty I wouldn’t hold my breath. If we push hard 24/7 they may change it in 5 or 6 years ..... maybe.

Feedback was it was really "favored" then something came up and it fell off table. Our guy said he will bring it up again next meeting this month.....

On sept 19 , I was given 5 minutes of floor time at the MS WFP Commission meeting in Jackson. After explaining to the commissioners and Dr Polles the void in law, I feel extremely confident we ( bowhunters) will be able to legally bowhunt hogs during small game only season ( February and May) on WMA. Furthermore Chairman Cossar said we should be able to hunt hogs at anytime !! So the wording will get changed and we are in business!!
