2013 ND buck

RickND:
My journey in traditional archery has taken me on a roller coaster ride. For the first 15 years I hunted with a compound bow then I started shooting traditional tackle in 2000 and in 2001 I harvested my first buck with a bear grizzly recurve.  Then the unspeakable happened I was working on the roof of my hayshed when I fell head first 15 feet to the concrete breaking my left ulna in 4 places shattering my funny bone and totally destroying my radial head.  After 4 surgeries on my arm the doctor said I would be lucky to wash my hair. Well I proved him wrong. In the summer of 2005 I tried to shoot my recurve again but could not do it. When I would get to full draw the new titanium radial head would dig into my joint causing great pain. The next few years were so aggravating and frustrating that I wasn't able to bowhunt. Then in 2008 I friend of mine asked me if I could shoot left handed so I tried it with a borrowed bow for the weekend and while I was terrible at it the main thing was there was no pain. That fall I had David Dowell make me a longbow. I received my bow the spring of 2009. I spent the year of 2009 practicing and as much as I wanted to hunt that fall I knew I wasn't ready to go afield. I couldn't wait for the 2010 archery season to open I couldn't make it out at all the first weekend. That Tuesday in September I will never forget I was sitting in my stand when in comes a nice tall 4x4 in full velvet  I made a good shot and it was a short recovery.  The buck in the pic above and then one on my wall in full velvet me more to me than any other deer I have harvested. It's been a long journey back. My bow is a David Dowell longbow 50# at 28 with cedar shafts and snuffer broadheads.
